Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes thesurprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he alsohas a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing,the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind,and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in abeginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality-the improviser andthe formalist-play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. Hisperformances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process ofabstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a strippeddown, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over theyears, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewardinggig with saxophonist Joshua Redman's band for two years, recording and concerts with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz,and recording as a sideman with the likes of Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and Charles Lloyd. For more than a decade,he has collaborated with several musicians and peers whom he respects greatly, including the guitarists Peter Bernsteinand Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Mehldau also has played on a number of recordings outside ofthe jazz idiom, like Willie Nelson's and singer-songwriter Joe Henry's . His music has appeared in severalTeatro Scarmovies, including Stanley Kubrick's and Wim Wender's . He also composed an originalEyes Wide Shut Million Dollar Hotelsoundtrack for the French film, . Puerto Rican singer/songwriter and guitarist Millo Torres began studying music at a very young age and eventuallyattended and graduated from Boston's Berklee College of Music. Glenn Monroig is a composer, guitarist, and singer of various types of music styles, such as salsa, boleros and rumba. Heis also credited among the Latin music industry with recording the first rap song in Spanish back in the early 1980's. GlennMonroig was influenced at an early age by his famous father, the renowned singer of boleros, Gilberto Monroig.

Glenn's professional debut as a singer was at age 14 when he sang at his father's night club "La Guitarrra de Gilberto" andlater went on to perform at places like Ocho Puertas, La Tea and other theatres in Puerto Rico. On this new four-song EP, the Drops find an instant connection to the Romanian gypsy punk music of their recenttour-mates, the Brooklyn-based Luminescent Orchestrii, a five-piece group about whom the says Scotsman "Thebalancing of frenzy and finesse is evidently a trademark...displayed to its utmost in the insanely frenetic dance tunes."Human beatboxer Adam Matta also joined the two bands for this short collection: a brilliant and absolutely live-in-the-studio- no overdubs - mashup of sounds, cultures, and repertoire.

These nine kindred souls seamlessly combine material already popularized by the Drops (their ingenious reworking of BluCantrell's brazen R&B anthem, "Hit ‘Em Up Style") with original material from the Orchestrii ("Knockin'"). They split theirsession time between Brooklyn and Winston-Salem, NC, but make everything sound like part of one thrillingly virtuosicjam. Instrumentation includes fiddles, banjo, harmonica and bass, plus lots of hand-clapping, free-style rapping and humanbeat-boxing. These tracks were recorded with such immediacy and clarity, and with such a palpable sense of fun andfriendship, that listening is almost like being there, hootin' and hollerin' along with them on a makeshift dance floor. And, aswith any great party, the disc feels like it's over much too soon.

Nonesuch Records has signed North Carolina-based trio the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a young string band in thecenturies-old Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition. The group's members-Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, andJustin Robinson-all trade duties as singers and swap instruments, too.

Old-time Southern string music is often associated with Caucasian musicians from Appalachia, not African-Americans fromthe North Carolina Piedmont. But as Giddens pointed out in a recent NPR interview, "It seems that two things get left out ofthe history books. One, that there was string band music in the Piedmont, period. And that ... black folk was such a hugepart of string tradition." Carolina Chocolate Drops seek to not only correct this misunderstanding, but to keep the old-timestring music tradition alive.

The group was formed after Flemons, Giddens, and Robinson met at the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, NC. They havelearned that tradition under the tutelage of Joe Thompson-who at age 90 is believed to be the last living performer from thePiedmont string band heyday. Their repertoire is centered around the traditional music of the early twentieth century butalso includes original material as well as a show-stopping cover of Blu Cantrell's 2001 single "Hit ‘Em Up Style."

The members of Carolina Chocolate Drops come from diverse musical backgrounds. Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona,Dom Flemons has immersed himself in music of the past, with a prodigious record collection and an immense knowledge

of the different playing styles of the blues, country, and string band traditions. His influences include Ma Rainey, theBeatles, and the Band. As a part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Flemons uses his harmonicas for additional melody,and his jug and guitar root the band's rhythm.

Rhiannon Giddens, a Piedmont native, grew up with the sounds of bluegrass from one side of her family and classic bluesand jazz records on the other. After graduating the Oberlin Conservatory, she fell into contra dancing and became inspiredby the Roundpeak-style old time bands she heard at the dances. She worked extra jobs to buy her first banjo and fiddle,and hasn't looked back since. Giddens' style is heavily influenced by the playing of Joe and Odell Thompson. She alsocalls contra and social dances, and is working on playing and calling simultaneously.

Justin Robinson is the group's main fiddler and also plays banjo. He grew up in a house full of musicians-his mother is aclassically trained opera singer and cellist, his sister a classical pianist, and his grandfather a harmonica player. Robinsonplayed classical violin from the age of nine. Besides Piedmont string band music, he also is interested in RevolutionaryWar music, and fife and drum tradition of African Americans in the Deep South.

Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. They had both been living inNew York for years and had never crossed paths before. But from that night forward the two could hardly be pulled apart.Soon after their connection Hooper was invited to an art residency in Greece on the island of Crete and Hooper insists"without any hesitation" she invited Zucconi to join her on this journey. "Seriously, we had only known one another for afew days but are both so inspired and alive when we are together that going to Greece seemed like a magical and naturalthing to do" recalls Zucconi.

On Crete, in a small remote mountain village, Hooper and Zucconi met the members of their future band GROUPLOVE ayear before it was officially formed. Sean Gadd, a natural songwriter and guitar player, born and bred in London instantlybonded with the two eccentric New Yorkers. Their relationship became apparent through the music they were making dayin and day out. Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, anaccomplished drummer and producer, were also at the residency and quickly joined in with the musical trio. These fivemusicians make up the members of what we now know as GROUPLOVE .

Like all good things, the summer and the residency came to an end and the five friends scattered back to their homes allover the globe. With Sean in London, Christian and Hannah in Brooklyn and Ryan and Andrew in Los AngelesGROUPLOVE was faced with the challenge of what to do now. "We all understood how rare it is for five strangers to feelas close as family and create passionate music together. We couldn't just return to Brooklyn and let the music we all madefade into a memory of that summer we had in Greece," explains Zucconi. Everyone pulled their funds together and Sean,Christian and Hannah made their way to Ryan Rabin's studio in LA to record their album. "We seriously had the best timeof our lives doing that record", says Zucconi. And the result is an incredibly special album where soaring harmoniescoupled with sweeping anthems lead you through their powerful journey. Like the members of GROUPLOVE, their musicis diverse in influence and style but bonded together by an undeniably creative kinship.

Their experience back together and recording together was so potent that Hooper and Zucconi packed up their lives inBrooklyn and moved to LA to live and play their music.

"We never could have dreamt this up" says Zucconi, "but at the same time we're not at all surprised - GROUPLOVE ismeant to be. Our story a testament to fate, and our music is something we are ready to share."

Wanda Jackson was born in Oklahoma, but her father Tom - himself a country singer who quit because of the Depression- moved the family to California in 1941. He bought Wanda her first guitar two years later, gave her lessons, andencouraged her to play piano as well. In addition, he took her to see such acts as Tex Williams, Spade Cooley, and BobWills, which left a lasting impression on her young mind. In 1952, she won a local talent contest and was given a15-minute daily show on KLPR. The program, soon upped to 30 minutes, lasted throughout Jackson's high school years.It's here that Thompson heard her sing. Jackson recorded several songs with the Brazos Valley Boys, including "You Can'tHave My Love," a duet with Thompson's bandleader, Billy Gray. The song, on the Decca label, became a national hit, andJackson's career was off and running.

When Jackson first toured in 1955 and 1956, she was placed on a bill with none other than Elvis Presley. The two hit it offalmost immediately. Jackson said it was Presley, along with her father, who encouraged her to sing rockabilly.
