EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF SLOWLEARNERS AND GIFTED IN SCIENCE LEARNING :PROBLEMS AND POSSIBILITIES
“THE TERM GIFTED OR TALENTED STANDS FOR THOSE WHOSE PERFORMANCES
CONSISTENTLY REMARKABLE IN SOME POTENTIALLY VALUABLE ACTIVITY’’
PAUL WITTY
GIFTED STUDENTS
Characteristics Of Gifted Students
Better performance in specific problem solving tasks
Curiosity to learn and readDisplay greater reasoning ability
Action oriented Productive in individual and small group
situationHigh aspiration for prestigious
occupation
Ability to apply knowledge Have wider interests High motivation for physical activities Display goal oriented behaviour Showing curiosity in learning science High Perseverance &analytic perpetual ability to undertake science projects
EDUCATIONAL PROVISIONS FOR GIFTED CHILDREN
1. NON-GRADED CLASSROOM• Given freedom to complete the requirements of each stage• Can complete the course early
2. SPECIAL SCHOOL FOR THE GIFTED•Opening a special school, having a special class in the normal school•Provide special treatments
•Government should identify students under gifted category and send them to residential public school 3) SPECIAL CLASS IN A REGULAR SCHOOL• For the purpose of instruction, students sit in separate room and for social ,recreational activities kept with remaining students• Helps to grow academic and social habits Results of these ability grouping are controversial and unclear
• 4 ) GRADE SKIPPING • Double promotion is the technique to help the gifted to go
to next higher class without proceeding through the normal school requirements on the belief that the gifted child will have no difficulty in delivering the goods in the higher class
• Disadvantage :Emotional, psychological problems may arise if not able to adjust in the new peer group
• 5 ) EARLY ADMISSION• Early admission to primary school• Practice in western society to the extent of 6 months to one
year on the assumption that the children identified as having higher IQ can keep up with the curriculum
6) Advanced placement programs• Method of stimulating high aptitude students in high
schools• Thorough knowledge of needs and abilities of the
individual is required to accomplish success
7 ) Enrichment programs Enrichment program- type of activity devoted to the further
development of the particular intellectual skills and talents Can select an educational program that is challenging and
interesting No special curriculum has to be developed No negative effect on social, emotional or academic
development
Preliminaries in enrichment programs• (i) Identification and listing of gifted students in the
class• (ii)Identification of modifications /enrichment
techniques to be given to bright students• (8) SPECIAL SCIENCE COURSES Special science courses(PSSC,ChemStudy,BSCS, and
Nuffield science series etc) can insisted on curricula Main features: scientific integrity and emphasis on
science inquiry, experimentation, evaluation of evidences and construction of models and theories
9)SPECIAL GROUPING• Homogeneous grouping of students according to their
abilities• Provides a frame work within which enhanced
learning may be more effectively planned and executed
• It should be subject wise with differentiated curricula At least three types of courses conducive to the potential• Timetable is made student wise not section wise
Advantage : teaching can be modified according to the need of the students in a more effective way
Disadvantage :get labeled as A and B grade students
• (1) Teacher should be aware of the gifted child’s feeling of isolation
• (2) Use a flexible grouping to match nearly the different developmental level
• (3) Set realistic goals and avoid unnecessary anxiety
• (4) Divergent thinking should be appreciated
ROLE OF THE TEACHER
• (5) Motivate through giving alternative learning styles, encourage to develop independent projects ,exposure to texts and other materials, allowing inquiry skills and organizing independent study, developing a cooperative attitude
• (6) Make student reaction and involvement as essential parts of the learning process
• (7) Plan exercises and assignments that are neither too easy nor too difficult
• (8) Explore the connection between the lessons• (9) Present material logically &encourage additional
study• (10) Don’t over teach and lead by an example
“A SLOW LEARNER IS A CHILD WHO IS UNABLE TO COPE UP WITH THE WORK NORMALLY EXPECTED OF HIS AGE’’
CHARACTERISTICS OF SLOW LEARNER CHILDREN• Slow in learning than average students• Weak intellectually and emotionally• Having IQ below average• Sometimes student may be considered backward in one subject and not in others Qualities to be developed, Ability to communicate in speech and writingAnd to read with understandingAbility to make measurements and do
calculationsCapacities for thought, judgement, discrimination and enjoymentResponsibility for their work An understanding of the physical world and the society in which they live
A vocabulary for discussion of current events and issues in science An appreciation of the importance of the personal relationship and the value of cooperative effect
An ability to findout scientific information for themselvesAn awareness of the variety of ways in which leisure time can be used Selfconfidence, selfrespect and as realistic an idea of one’s own capabilities and potential
Remedial programs (i) SPECIAL GROUPING : Grouping according to the abilities Teacher should develop a teaching style which will be more effective Special curricula can develop and teaching materials tailored to the unique characteristics
(ii) Remedial programs Use of programmed instruction method which provide self learning unitsInnovative science teachers should write programmed units on selected topics to be used by the students
Teaching strategy :•Give them manipulative or hands - on tasks•Can master skills when broken into steps•Can perform repetitive task well
.Be patient with slow learners
. Give special care and love
.Use child centered teaching
strategy .Encourage and help the students achieve success
Role of the teacher
Conclusion :Teachers need to aware of the specific learning and problems that can cause a child to become an under achiever. They need to take a leading role which will effectively meet the learning needs of such students. The ultimate aim should be to make the exceptional child to do at their level best.
Tell me and I forget,Teach me …I remember,Involve me and I learn.
