Issue 14Summer/Fall 2014
At TUCC, our mission is excellence in urology.
That commitment extends to providing our
patients with easy-to-access tools to manage their
urologic health and their relationship with us.
Our recently launched online patient portal provides patients with secure access to:
• Receive lab results and other messages from
TUCC physicians.
• View billing statements.
• Pay bills from TUCC. We accept debit cards,
Visa and Mastercard.
A wealth of patient education resources are posted
throughout The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC)
website. In order to provide greater understanding
of the diagnostic and treatment options available for
various urologic conditions, we have created a new
online video series featuring interviews with several
TUCC physicians.
Topics covered include:
• Dr. Eric Gross: Targeted radiation therapy as a
treatment option for urologic cancers
• Dr. Jesse Mills: Men’s urologic health and the Center
for Men’s Health at TUCC
• Dr. Carsten Sorensen: Kidney and ureteral stones
• Dr. Eli Hsu: Female urologic health
• Dr. Mark Jones: Prostate
cancer screening and
robotic surgery
Issue 14Fall 2014
September is national Prostate Cancer Awareness
Month. More than 3,000 men in Colorado will be
diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. It’s a
disease that impacts our fathers, our husbands, our
brothers and our friends.
TUCC is well known throughout the Rocky
Mountain region as a prostate cancer treatment
center of excellence. In fact, we treat more
prostate cancer patients than any other facility
in Colorado. From diagnosis, to treatment, to
survivorship resources, we are committed to
providing patients with technologically advanced,
compassionate patient care.
Did you know?• TUCC utilizes on-site, intensity modulated
radiation therapy (IMRT), image guided radiation
therapy (IGRT), 3-D conformal planning and
prostate brachytherapy seed implantation for
patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. Our
radiation oncologist, Dr. Eric Gross, is the only
radiation oncologist in Colorado to devote his
practice solely to the treatment of urologic
cancers.
• TUCC surgeons lead the region in performing
da Vinci robotic prostatectomies (prostate
removal), having performed more than 3,000
over the past 10 years. Experience speaks
volumes. In 2013, HealthGrades ranked TUCC
and our hospital partner, Porter Adventist
Hospital, as one of the top 100 U.S. hospitals
for prostatectomies. This ranking is the result of
having the lowest surgical complication rate for
this procedure among all hospitals in the Rocky
Mountain region.
• Each month, the TUCC Tumor Board – made
up of physicians representing the disciplines of
urology, radiation oncology, medical oncology,
radiology and pathology - meets at TUCC to
analyze difficult prostate cancer cases. This
collaborative approach allows us to provide our

patients with comprehensive, multi-disciplinary
treatment options.
• There has been a lot of controversy surrounding
prostate cancer screening in recent years. At
TUCC, we believe that the Prostate Specific
Antigen (PSA) blood test remains an important
tool in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Our
physicians follow the recommendations of the
American Urological Association in encouraging
men to have a baseline prostate cancer screening
at age 40. Because prostate cancer is a slow
growing disease, early detection is paramount.
An early stage prostate cancer diagnosis also
doesn’t necessarily require treatment. In many
instances, we will place a prostate cancer patient
on active surveillance and monitor his disease
over time before treatment is recommended.
