Chapter 9:
1. Why was there a picture of the lion on the hill?
2. Select 10 words that the author used to describe the war. What effect do these
have on your opinion of the war?
3. Describe Bertie’s time during the war. Include specific events and how you think
he would have felt about them.
4. Do you think Bertie was brave? Why?
Chapter 10:1. Why do you think the ‘Frenchman’ called the lion the White Prince?
2. What happened to the circus during the war?
3. How did Bertie and Millie discover Mr Merlot’s house?
4. How did Bertie feel when he was reunited with the Lion? Use evidence from
the story in your answer.

Task 1:
Design a medal for bravery.
Task 2:Think about someone in real life or from another book that you would give this medal
to. Explain your reasons for choosing this person.
Task 3: Bertie’s feelings change a lot throughout Chapter 10. Write a diary entry for Bertie documenting the events of this chapter. Make sure to write down the different
emotions he is feeling in the diary.

Create a rainforest silhouette. Colour or paint
the sky/sea/sun in the background. Then cut
out the animals and trees from black paper
and stick them down over it.

Collect some leaves, shells, rocks of various shapes
and sizes. Take time to notice the patterns and
shapes that you see on them. Draw these patterns on
a sheet of paper. Continue to add these shapes and
patterns until the page is full and then colour it in.
