students to write.

Academic Writing:

Get It Right at NMMU.

RE: presentation

Purpose of this session

about

Your writing

• There are more than 28,000 students

• At times, this is a classroom size

• The focus is rarely on writing, there is content

• Critical thinking is a phrase often heard

and always demanded

• Your writing is how you are assessed and scored, and eventually to be hired

• It is YOUR JOB to develop this competence so that it reflects what you have learnt

• Our website: www.writing.nmmu.ac.za

Your Idea of University Writing Requirements

What is ‘different’ with writing at university?

What are your writing challenges at university?

Please write as many as you can think of, with one per piece of the coloured paper provided. We will try and respond with appropriate support based on the responses.

2. To share resources relevant to developing academic writing with participants (students and lecturers)

www.writing.nmmu.ac.za

Write the next bit down quickly. We don’t have enough time to explore them all today. But, be sure to check them out after this session, when you have time.

3. To explore specific resources that being at NMMU affords students and staff

Let’s try an example.

We will use your own voice to illustrate the process of attribution, which is

a) how to quote, and

b) how to create a reference list

We will use MS Office to do this.

You can also add other add-ons to the software, like Mendeley, which helps referencing even more.

The library and Blended Learning often run workshops or training sessions related to this.

4. To introduce and clarify the process of submitting draft assignments via
