During the season of Lent, we have been looking at the stories in Mark 14 and 15, asking “Were you there?” We have had the opportunity to hear the stories of disciples who - like us - get it wrong sometimes. They doubt, they deny, they run away, they fall asleep. We’ve heard the story of Peter who, though he was very close to Christ, denied him. But through God’s grace, Peter then gives his life as he builds the church and serves as a witness to a deep and abiding faith. Stories like Peter’s remind us that as flawed as the people in Jesus’ story are, God worked in them and through them so that the Gospel message was heard and shared. We are reminded that God works through us -- as flawed as we are -- as long as we continue to offer ourselves to God. That is the gift of grace! Our journey continues. This Sunday we explore all that is happening in the Palm and Passion Stories. On Holy Thursday, we come together to share the bread and cup as they did in the upper room. On Good Friday, we are invited to come and to pray, to see Christ reflected within us. On Easter Sunday we celebrate the risen Christ with a sunrise service at Stephens Park, a pancake breakfast, Sunday school and worship! The Sunday after Easter will give us an opportunity to engage in Holy Humor, and will help us to see how the story of Christ’s resurrection changes our world. As we enter into the season of Easter, we remember that God’s grace surrounds us even as we continue to get it wrong. Join us as we proclaim “We are there!” New Horizons New Horizons New Horizons New Horizons New Horizons New Horizons New Horizons New Horizons News News News News News News News News From the desk of… Pastor Trista April 2012 Volume 15 Issue 4

We’ve heard the story of Peter who, though he was very close to

deep and abiding faith. Stories like Peter’s remind us that as flawed as the people in Jesus’ story

Mary Ann Morris led a workshop on conflict transformation

at the church. During this time we discussed that conflict will

always exist within church communities (and within our

relationships) as we are all broken people. She redefined a

few things for us:

• Conflict: when there is a stop-gap between expectations

and reality, conflict occurs.

• Peace does not mean a place where there is no noise,

trouble, or hard work; it means to be in the midst of those

things and still be centered and calm in your heart.

We discussed common reasons for conflict, the mistakes

we normally make in responding to that conflict, and how new

tools can help us build stronger relationships. We discussed

ways to express ourselves, to communicate honestly, and to

set appropriate boundaries. If you missed the workshop but

would like to learn more, please contact Pastor Trista.

Church Conference

Our regularly scheduled council meeting will be a church

conference in order to elect new church leadership. All are

invited to join us at 7pm on April 12.

One of the very special ways members of our church family

can help create the spirit and beauty of the Easter season is by

purchasing a lily in honor or memory of a loved one, to be used

in our Sanctuary on Easter Sunday. If you would like to give a

lily, please call the church office no later than Wednesday, April

4. The cost of each lily is $9.00. Unless otherwise requested,

the names of those honored and remembered, and those

making the gift will be noted on Easter Sunday.

For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the

mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all

Spring Day May 5! This is the day to make our yard

welcoming and loved. There will be jobs for everyone, even those

who are not diggers and planters or those who don’t consider

themselves “outdoorsy.” During April be on the lookout for a

perennial or red annuals that you would like to see in our

memorial garden and flower beds and consider purchasing them

the church gardens. Also, if you have plants in your yard that

need dividing consider bringing the extras to church. Any

questions or advice: call Marlis Morelock 228-1225 or Diana

On April 22, (Earth Day) our Birthdays and Blessings Box

offering will be used to purchase Nokero solar light bulbs. Why?

For many families around the world, the only source of indoor

lighting available to them is kerosene lanterns. The result for

those living in those homes is exposure to dangerous levels of

toxins that has been compared to smoking 40 cigarettes per day.

For the children in those families, the most dangerous thing they

may do is their homework.

One solution to this problem is the use of Nokero (no

kerosene) solar light bulbs. After hanging in direct sunlight all

day, the Nokero 200 will provide light for about 6 hours or more

which is more than enough for most families who use kerosene

lanterns. While not as bright as a typical incandescent bulb, the

bulbs provide enough light to read, cook, study and do household

chores. The light is also brighter and steadier than that of

kerosene lanterns or candles and negates the risk of fire that may

occur when candles or kerosene lanterns are overturned.

Nokero bulbs can also be used during utility outages, natural

disasters or during outdoor recreation and camping events.

The Nokero bulbs we fund through our offering will be sent to

Nicaragua through the Container Project.

At the entrance to the church there is a small flowering Little Twist Fuji Cherry tree with delicate pink blossoms. The tree was planted last fall in memory of Fern Robie. It is the beginning of the Eagle Scout project planned by Tate Dempsey, BSA Troop 7. The project will create a new welcoming area along the walkway to the church entrance.

Thank You!

Dear Friends in Mission:

Thank you for your generous gift to United Methodist

Committee on Relief. 100 percent of your contribution will go to Heifer International, Living Gifts, Advance #982532 through The

Advance, the designated giving channel of The United Methodist

Church.

Your gift received on 02/29/12 for $360.00 is engaging

families in local congregations to help make a difference in

eradicating hunger.

Because you gave, UMCOR is able to “Be There” and “Be

Hope” on your behalf. UMCOR programs provide food for the

hungry, help farmers grow plentiful and nutritious food, and

support people left destitute by natural disasters and war. You

gifts go a long way to bring healing and hope to people in need.

We give thanks for your generosity.

This gift will bring hope to those who need it most.

Grace and Peace,

The public is invited to attend a presentation by Rob Cahill, co

-director of Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC) which

is located in the central highlands of Guatemala. Rob will be

speaking at Calvary Episcopal Church, 123 S 9th St at 2pm on

Sunday, April 22. Rob provided leadership for the January, 2011

mission trip to Guatemala that was sponsored and financially

supported by New Horizons United Methodist Church. Elizabeth

Bonanno, Cassie O’Brien and Carol Oliver were participants on

that trip.

CCFC works to alleviate poverty and protect forests through

agroecology, reforestation, environmental education, and eco-

tourism in forty, rural Q’eqchi’ Maya communities that border the

cloud forest. In his development work, Rob works closely Heifer

International and also with U.S. Fish and Wildlife and Cornell Lab

of Ornithology. Heifer International’s mission statement is to work

with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the

earth so it is especially appropriate for Rob to be speaking on

Earth Day.

Those who will be attending Rob’s presentation can expect

spectacularly beautiful photos of the people, mountains and birds

as well as compelling stories of the Q’eachi’ Maya and Rob’s

work with them.

For those unable to attend on Sunday, Rob will also be

speaking on Tuesday, April 24 at 7pm at Missouri United

Methodist Church, 204 S 9 St. Those who belong to or have a

particular interest in the Sierra Club and Audubon may find this

session especially interesting as the focus of that presentation

will be primarily on the birds and environment in that part of the

world.

We will have more visitors and guests this Easter. It is

important to let them know right away we care, and to show

God’s grace and love. A simple smile or words of “Welcome to

New Horizons this morning” or “We are glad you are here this

morning!” may open the door to a new, friendly relationship.

They may be first time seekers, visiting family members or

church members returning after being away from awhile.

If it is someone you do not know, then greeting with “I don’t

think I’ve met you yet, I’m….” is a warm non-threatening

welcome. The first and last point of contact is crucial to building

relationships. After the worship service, be mindful of your

conversations and include everyone in the discussion, invite

them to return, introduce them to others, bid them farewell.

Offer your acceptance in your own way and with genuine

warmth – don’t overdo it or be insincere. Most visitors or

returning church members will decide in the first 60 seconds

whether they will return again. The two most uncomfortable

times for those who do not know anyone or only know a few are

when entering the church and sanctuary and after the worship

service. Greeting someone following a worship service with a

warm goodbye and invitation to return will leave them with a

feeling of being welcome. Never let it be said about New

Horizons United Methodist Church --- “No one said “Hello.”
