NEW HOPE PRESS SUMMER 2017 Summer Happenings at New Hope Beginning on Sunday, May 28th, New Hope will begin its summer schedule. Please watch the News & Opportunities and other Communication avenues for the times of our summer Worship Service and Christian Education Hour. Summer Worship at New Hope We know that summer is a busy time for many. With plans for vacations, graduations, weddings and get-togethers with friends, sometimes the dog days of summercan be more hectic that the other seasons of the year. And we also recognize that summer can be the only down-time many people get, and that its even harder waking the kids up in the morning when theres no school. This summer, we would like to chal- lenge you to become more active in sum- mer activities and worship services at New Hope. On Sundays, our For- mation for Disciple- ship committee has some exciting things planned for both chil- drens and adult Sun- day School at 9:45 am. There are still many activities to partici- pate in at New Hope during the summer. Dont forget Vacation Bible School begin- ning July 10th. Its a great time for the chil- dren, but its also a rewarding volunteer experience for adults. (See the article in this edition of New Hope Press for more infor- mation) So whatever your summer plans, we hope to see you at New Hope this sum- mer. And remember, God doesnt take va- cations. Hell be wait- ing for you when you get back!

NEW HOPE PRESS SUMMER 2017

Summer Happenings at New Hope

Beginning on Sunday, May 28th, New Hope will begin its summer schedule.

Please watch the News & Opportunities and other Communication avenues for the times of our summer Worship Service and Christian

Education Hour.

Summer Worship at New Hope

We know that summer is a busy time for many. With plans for vacations, graduations, weddings and get-togethers with friends, sometimes the “dog days of summer” can be more hectic that the other seasons of the year. And we also recognize that summer can be the only down-time many people get, and that it’s even harder waking the kids up in the morning when there’s no school.

This summer, we would like to chal-lenge you to become more active in sum-mer activities and worship services at New Hope. On Sundays, our For-mation for Disciple-ship committee has some exciting things planned for both chil-dren’s and adult Sun-day School at 9:45 am. There are still many activities to partici-pate in at New Hope during the summer.

Don’t forget Vacation Bible School begin-ning July 10th. It’s a great time for the chil-dren, but it’s also a rewarding volunteer experience for adults. (See the article in this edition of New Hope Press for more infor-mation) So whatever your summer plans, we hope to see you at New Hope this sum-mer. And remember, God doesn’t take va-cations. He’ll be wait-ing for you when you get back!

Youth Fundraiser—Bake Sale & Car Wash

On May 7th, the Youth Mission Trip participants will be hosting a bake sale and car wash. The car wash will take place before, during and after services, in the parking lot off the south doors (outside of the kitchen). The bake sale will be in the hallway by the kitchen and will feature homemade items by the youth and their parents. Please stop by one or both fundraisers on May 7th to show your support for the Youth Mission Trip!

Gateway Greening Stay Mission We've always enjoyed the support of the congregation for mission trips. However, our traditional mission trip is a week-long effort and a day's drive away. That tends to preclude some of us from partici-pating directly. So now we're developing an idea for mission "trips" that are local and have no overnights. The idea is to have a coordinating dinner and a mission-related study on a Friday night followed by local mission work on Saturday and a short report to the congregation on Sunday. Our first "Stay Mission" is Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7. We'll be working

at the Gateway Greening demonstration garden at 3841 Bell Avenue, about a half-hour away. We'll have a dinner of pizza, salad, dessert on Friday, 6:30, at the church. The dinner is open to all and child care will be available. We're looking for 15 volunteers, 8 or older, to work at the demonstration garden on Saturday, 9:00 until noon. We'll meet at the church around 8:15 for those interested in carpooling. From their website: Gateway Greening isn’t just about gardens and plants. It’s about working together to create something beautiful — safer, more colorful neighborhoods for our children; food for the underprivi-leged and opportunities for the homeless; and a city that embodies our vision of sustainability and hope. Gateway Greening is a community of gardeners, neighbors, friends and volunteers. Known as Gateway Greening’s outdoor office, the Demonstration Garden on Bell Ave. is a thriving communi-ty resource for urban gardening activities. It features 20 garden demonstration beds and shares it’s space with Bell Garden, a traditional community garden. Each week, food from the gardens is weighed, shared with volunteers and delivered to a local soup kitchen. There's a sign-up sheet in the narthex as well as an online signup at https://tinyurl.com/NHPC-stay-may Again, the dinner is open to all, do come out whether you can participate on Saturday or not, but please sign up so we know you're coming. Childcare will be provided for dinner. See Mary Powers, Alyssa Murray, or Jim Cox ([email protected]) if you have questions

Diaper Drive

Thank you to everyone who is supporting the month-long diaper drive to support the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank. The Bank is in desperate need of size 5 and 6 diapers. Please stack them in the Missions corner in the Narthex. If you are planning on writing a check, please make it payable to New Hope and earmark it for the "diaper bank" in the memo line. The congregation was so generous last year, but we know we can beat that goal! Questions? Please contact Alyssa Murray.

Mission Opportunities STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE

Saturday May 13th—12:30pm - 5:00pm O.A.S.I.S. volunteers are needed to pick up and sort items collected by the letter carriers at both the St. Charles 63301 and the St. Peters 63376 Post Offices. Volunteers needed: 1.) Volunteers who have a pick-up and would be willing to shuttle collected items from both post offices to the O.A.S.I.S. Food Pantry. (Additional drivers may be needed. Watch for updates.) 2.) Volunteers who will help unload pick-up trucks at O.A.S.I.S and help sort the items delivered. 3.) Volunteers can come in shifts; the 1:30 - 4:30 are the busiest times. Sign up in the information area.

HARVEST RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HELP In partnership with Harvest Ridge Elementary School, we are collecting ankle-length socks (white, black, gray, or colors), as well as athletic/sweat pants for boys and girls and leggings for girls. Sized for elementary-aged children, grades K-5, these can be new or gently used. They will be provided to the children, as need-ed. Questions? Contact Mary Powers, [email protected]. School snacks: we are still collecting snacks for Harvest Ridge students. You may pick up lists of peanut-free snacks and drop off your donations in the “Information and Outreach” area of the Narthex.

Female Connections The Female Connection has been a part of New Hope for over 15 years. It is an open group for women of all ages that meet on a monthly basis for Christian fellowship. Please join us for any or all of our events over the summer!! For more information or questions, please contact Deb Mackin. On Thursday, May 18, we’ll meet at 6:30 PM at the Swing-A-Round Golf Center on Veteran’s Parkway (that’s the south service road of I-70) between Zumbehl and Cave Springs. We’ll play a fun round of miniature golf and then we’ll swing over to Culver’s on Muegge for some frozen delights. In case of rain, we’ll meet at Cul-ver’s at 6:30. On Thursday, June 15, we are going to dinner and a free concert in the park. We will meet at Lewis & Clark’s Restaurant (217 South Main Street in St. Charles – meet outside) at 6:30 PM for dinner. We will then walk a few blocks to Frontier Park and enjoy the sounds of the St. Charles Municipal Concert Band as they present a night of their Summer Concert Series. The concert begins at 8:00 and you will want to bring along a lawn chair or blanket. If you can’t join us for dinner, come later and join us for the concert. For July we will meet at the church at 10:45 on Saturday, July 15 with Forest Park as our destination. We will go to the Boat House for lunch and then enjoy the afternoon at the Missouri History Mu-seum (general admission is free). There is a sign-up sheet so that we can set up a reservation at the Boat House.

Presbyterian Women PW Birthday Gathering

PW will hold our annual birthday luncheon after the 11:00 am worship service on May 7. This is a very important meeting and we hope ALL women of the church can attend. Significant others are also welcome. We will vote on the 2017/2018 slate of officers (Alyssa Murray, Moderator; Donna Huffman, Vice-Moderator; Jennifer Everly, Treasur-er; Nancy Seals, Secretary). Additionally, the PW scholarships will be awarded to de-serving graduating seniors. We also welcome Cindy Feig, Moderator of Presbyterian Women of Giddings-Lovejoy. She will speak to us about the importance of PW, not on-ly at the local level, but worldwide. PW is an important organization, but we are in dan-ger of losing our chapter at New Hope because of the lack of membership and willingness to serve. Please make every effort you can go stay for lunch and cupcakes to celebrate PW and all it does.

Attention: Calling all cooks - men, women and children—who love to cook or eat. Thursday, May18th at 6:30, PW will be hosting a Pampered Chef fundraiser with up to 15 % of the proceeds going to their projects, such as the Diaper Drive, NHPC Scholarship, and the Fair Trade Market. Your con-sultant will be Donna Huffman and beginning May 1st you may go to her web-site at www.pamperedchef.biz/donnahuffman, click on Find A Show and where it says Host/Fundraiser, type in Alyssa Murray. It will say the party is May 1st, but this way you may order ahead of time, if unable to attend. The party will close out on May 25th. Please come and join us for an evening of fun, food and prizes. Any questions, please contact Donna at 447-8956. Hope to see you there.

Hero Central: Discover Your Strength in God!

July 10 - July 14 ~ 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Throughout each session of this year’s VBS program, children will participate in all of their favorite activities: Bible story time, music, crafts, snacks, rec-reation and science discoveries. Vacation Bible School will be from 9 a.m. until noon and will include a special snack and t-shirt! Registration is $25.00 per child, which includes a t-shirt. Early drop-off is available (7:30 am—9:00 am) for an additional charge. As in previous years, we will end our VBS week with a Celebration Picnic on Sunday, July 16th, following the 11L00 am Worship Service. Vacation Bible School is a great opportunity for us to share God’s love with the children who at-tend and with each other. We are hoping that you will prayerfully consider helping this year. There are lots of places to help out, and childcare will be provided at both sessions. Registration forms and volunteer forms are available in the Outreach and Information area of the Narthex. Please feel free to call the church office with any questions.

Music Notes If you attend worship in May and early June, you will discover that the overarching theme for the choir’s an-thems is “something old, something new.” The May and June anthems include: Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us, with a newly composed tune, accompanied by the bell choir. Then Sings My Soul (How Great Thou Art), set with a different tune than the one with which we are familiar. You Are Mine, a relatively new song from the 1990s, accompanied by Tracy Grundy, flutist. Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, a 13th century text attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, in a lovely setting by contemporary composer Howard Helvey. On Pentecost, June 4, we will “jazz it up” with two anthems: one is gospel-tinged and the other has a Carib-bean flavor. Following Pentecost, the choir will take a break from regular rehearsals, but choir members plan to fill the loft to assist with hymn singing, and they will offer an anthem on certain Sundays this summer. We also plan to have some solos, small ensembles, and some musical guests. We are planning to have a pre-service hymn sing on summer Sundays when the choir is not singing. Please submit the titles of your FIVE favorite hymns or sacred songs suitable for congregational singing. Preference will be given to songs that are in the Glory to God hymnal. E-mail the titles to me at [email protected]. ONE SET OF FIVE SONGS PER PERSON, please. I cannot promise we will sing all of them, but perhaps there are a few that are congregation-wide favorites. The deadline for submissions is June 1. If you have questions, please e-mail me or talk to me after the service. I am looking forward to attending the Worship and Music Conference at Montreat in June. It is always a great time. I refuel and refresh, learn new things, participate in well-planned and executed worship, and make mu-sic with several hundred other church musicians. In July I will be going to Little Rock to a conference spon-sored by the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. I am looking forward to being one of the singers for this conference, to visiting the church in which our daughter was baptized, and to seeing some friends in Arkansas along the way. When the newsletter resumes in the fall, look for some information about hymns and other sacred songs, expounding upon what was presented in the recent hymn event sponsored by the Presbyterian Women. We'll start with the ancient Greeks. Did you know that many of the words still used by musicians today come from the Greek language? They include the word music itself, which meant “the art of the muses.” The mus-es were goddesses, each representing a different art. Examples of music-related words coming from the Greek include symphony, orchestra, harmony, and chorus. How do the ancient Greeks, who were born cen-turies before Christ, influence hymn singing to this day? See the answer in the next newsletter. Peace, Gay
