Our youth may be back from Panama, but another opportunity to serve abroad — and with your family! — still lies ahead: New Hope’s Sharing Our Strength International team is planning another trip to Panama for families this Thanksgiving. This and the youth trip fall under the umbrella of the Chesapeake Conference, which is building several churches and schools in Western Panama over the next few years.!

Because of its stable government, Panamá has a strong national police force and infrastructure, which make it much safer than most of the surrounding countries. But beyond the skyscrapers and wide

avenues of the city, many people are still suffering. Among them are Ngöbe-Buglé Indians, nomadic Indians who live on a reservation that covers a huge area of the mountainous

Chiriquí province, who have not been able to make the transition into a modern, business and agriculturally based economy. The poorest of the poor, they live in shacks, wear

used clothing and usually eat only once daily.!The Thanksgiving trip, which takes place Nov. 21-29, is an opportunity for families to serve together and includes time built in for relaxation and some sightseeing. The trip project involves finishing the building of one of the churches, painting and constructing a baptistry. A Vacation Bible School program for local children also will be offered. The cost is $800 per person (plus airfare), which covers trip insurance, in-country transportation, lodging at a beach resort, meals at the worksite and a Panama Canal tour.!

Only a few spots remain open for the trip. Don’t miss out on a Thanksgiving vacation you will never forget as you serve the people of Panama along with your

church family!

The moment Phyllis was introduced as the newest member of the team, I knew she was different. There was a certain serenity and peace about her that was evident in her smile and the way she spoke. I liked her immediately, and we became friends as we both worked the night shift in the trauma ICU. We shared a love for God, and our spiritual discussions would often help us stay alert during the early morning hours when all was still and quiet.

One night, a very critically wounded young man was brought in at the beginning of the shift. He had multiple stab wounds to the chest, and it seemed unlikely that he would survive the night. Because he was so critical, both Phyllis and I were assigned to his care. We set about the task of trying to keep him alive until his family could come and say their goodbyes.

The next few hours were tension-filled as we worked to stabilize him. Phyllis drew me aside and said, “I think we need to pray for him and his family.” We bowed our heads, and Phyllis began to pray. At the end of her prayer, she said something that made me pause and think. She said, “Help us stand strong for You.” When the young man’s parents came, Phyllis offered to pray for them, and after praying, she took the mother’s hand and said, “Stand strong for God.” Later that night, as the life of this young man slowly slipped away, Phyllis whispered to me, “I believe this man is standing strong for God.”

This puzzled me for some time. To me, standing strong for God meant remaining strong and faithful to God in the face of opposition or persecution. The Bible lists individuals of faith who stood strong for God

in the face of persecution and death: Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego; Stephen and Paul. As young children, we are all encouraged to stand strong for God in the same way these biblical giants did.

However, I have come to understand that standing strong for God is so much more than withstanding opposition. To stand strong for God also means to trust and believe that His good and perfect will is truly good and perfect — and that no matter what happens in our lives, God is still strong, powerful and sovereign. To stand strong for God means to stand confident on His promises and willingly allow God to be God. It really is an affirmation of God’s reputation and character; that no matter our circumstance, in tragedy and in joy, let nothing sway you, for God is God!

Are you willing to stand strong for God in the everyday challenges of our lives? When a loved one dies; when you lose your job or your home? When the tests come back positive, or when the treatment did not work? When you did not get accepted to the school of your choice or your marriage is crumbling? When your business fails or you slipped back into your addiction?

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power” (Ephesians 6:10).

Weekly Challenge Memorize Ephesians 6:10-17.!

For the Family Read Daniel 3 together as a family to learn how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stood up for God. Help you children understand what it means to stand up for God by asking each person daily how they stood up for God that day. Make a daily list, and post it where everyone can see. Affirm each family member on how he or she stood up for God.
