President’s Column

Whew! Made it through one of our busiest months for LWV!

The Women’s March – what a perfect day – we had a good showing of our members even if we didn’t meet up

with everyone and we loved the pictures! It was great being with 300,000 of the nicest, in sync group of people

ever!

We had a great book discussion on Give Us the Ballot at the Panera Bread in Deer Park, thank you Ann

Kennedy for leading the discussion and keeping us on track! Some people had read the book (some twice

even!), some had finished the book and some had listened to it and snoozed (me!) but very good discussion –

why do these things keep happening? That’s why we have to keep meeting and being on top of issues!

Then we had the Drinks and Discussion night! Yikes! The room was full, the discussion lively and questions

just kept on coming – ideas to help get out more turnout, ideas of why people need to turnout and ideas of good

sources to find accurate information on news. Gary Midkiff was our speaker and he has shared his source list

with us – see the tab for looking at his source list.

Voter Registrations! Palatine High School registration was another fantastic success – over 200 kids

registered! Now if we can just get them to turn out and vote in the future we will have done our jobs!

Harper Volunteer Fair – Ann Kennedy and I shared the table top responsibilities – very fun to have all the

Harper students come through the hallway – such a diverse group of students! To top it off we even had a radio

interview about the LWV Palatine Area! Ann and & I were able to highlight the variety of issues that LWV is

working on this year, our township study, observer corp and voter service to name just a few.

Find something of interest and share your thoughts! Candidate Forums will be February 24 and 25th –

volunteer to be ushers, card runners, timers and general helpers will be needed. See the sign up genius!

Let’s keep these great events coming!

Television: I do not watch television – my wife Carol and I choose not to have television service in our

home. If someone tells me about a specific program (e.g. Fareed Zakaria) they believe will interest me I

find it online.

Book Club Report

February 3

The Palatine LVW February program was

Book Club - which was held at Rolling

Meadows Library Feb 3. The book

discussion, led by Dr. Betty Hull,

was Evicted; Poverty and Profit in the

American City by Matthew Desmond.

It opened many eyes to the desperate situation

of the poor living in cities. Eviction is an issue

that hits women and children the hardest, and

can be seen as a women's issue. On the issue

of housing, the LWVUS "believes that the

federal government shares with other levels of

government the responsibility to provide

equality of opportunity for education,

employment and housing for all persons in the

United States regardless of their race, color,

gender, religion, national origin, age, sexual

orientation or disability."

Our local Palatine LWV had a past program

on Wings and a donation drive to benefit

them. Future follow-up may include a review

of affordable housing in our area and our

position on housing.

Women’s History Month Luncheon Sunday, March 11, 11:30 am – 2 pm

Wilmette Golf Club Restaurant - 3900 Fairway

Drive, Wilmette, 60091. Cost $30

4th Quarter Campaign Finance Reports

Candidates for both the offices of Governor and Attorney General reported increased spending in the

fourth quarter of 2017, with the Primary Elections just three months away.

6th Congressional District

4th Quarter Fundraising and Spending 2017

Incumbent Congressman Peter Roskam may be free from a primary challenger, but he has faced considerable issues in his district after voting for the ACA repeal and the GOP tax bill. Democrats Kelly Mazeski and Sean Casten hope to take advantage of Roskam's moderate district, which voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016. However, Mazeski or Casten would need to survive a seven-way primary before facing off against Roskam in November.
