From the Symposium Co-Chairs,
A local animal nutrition meeting – gone Global!
Originally, our Fuelling Wellness Symposium was intended to be an in-person event welcoming regional veterinary health care teams and equine and companion animal paraprofessionals to a day of practical and innovative nutrition education. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to move the Symposium to a virtual platform and we are now excited to share this event across Canada and around the world!
As a team of researchers, clinicians and technicians focused on animal nutrition, the idea of bringing together our collective local experiences for an audience of international veterinarians, technicians, scientists, students, and other pet and horse nutrition enthusiasts is humbling. This is the first educational event to be co-hosted by the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and our institutional partner Equine Guelph. Truly, this is an inclusive day of collaboration and learning for everyone involved.
The goal of our Fuelling Wellness Symposium is to build bridges with veterinary teams, para-professionals and pet and horse enthusiasts by providing evidence-based nutrition knowledge and a nutrition tool kit to help keep pets and horses healthy. This single-day event will include some practical summaries and concepts from the multi-day Global Animal Nutrition Summit as well as presenting recent research findings applicable to horses, companion animals, and veterinary practice.
We are deeply grateful to our Global Animal Nutrition Summit sponsors, especially Diamond sponsor, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and Bronze sponsors Mad Barn and Pet Trust, for their generous support of this special day. We will consider the Symposium a success if our attendees leave with effective tools for their nutrition toolbox and with a renewed passion for animal nutrition. We hope everyone enjoys the presentations from the safety of their homes.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sarah Dodd, BVSc, MSc, PhD Cand., Res. ECVCN (veterinary health care team symposium)
Shoshana Verton-Shaw, RVT, VTS-Nutrition (pet professional symposium)

The Art(fulness) and Science of Veterinary Conversations about Patient NutritionVeterinarian-client conversation is the “glue” that holds the veterinary visit together and is thus a critical determinant of patient health. An important yet delicate topic of such conversation is animal nutrition. This presentation introduces the science of conversation analysis (CA) and what we know about the art of everyday talk to explore actual diet discussions between veterinarians and clients. By showing how different conversational moves help and hinder dietary information-gathering and intervention in real life, CA provides an evidence-based approach for identifying and refining clinical communication skills in the domain of pet nutrition.

Participants will also learn how to describe and score hay samples in terms of their: maturity (stage of harvest), leafiness, colour (indicating weather and sun damage), odour, softness, and freedom from impurities.

Equine Assessment Knowing how to assess a horse can help caregivers make a more informed decision about an appropriate feeding plan for the horse. By assessing the horse first, you can determine if your current feeding plans are working, whether your feeding plans need to change, and if so, in what ways they need to change. This talk will introduce participants to the tools/systems that are available to assess a horse.

Mycotoxins in Horse FeedHorse feed is frequently contaminated with various mycotoxins produced by the secondary metabolism of diverse fungal contaminants. As a non-ruminant monogastric, horse may be more sensitive to the detrimental effects of mycotoxins. Contaminated hay, silage or grain and their byproducts impact horse health and immune system and may affect mare reproductive performances.

Donkey Assessment and Nutrition Tips Donkeys have historically been mistaken as ‘horses with long ears’ when in fact, they have many unique aspects of basic care, not the least of which includes nutrition. This presentation seeks to provide an overview of physiological and pharmacological adaptations that make them well-suited for the digestion of fibrous forage and also more sensitive to the energy-dense feeds that many horses are accustom to. We will address the resulting impact to the welfare of donkeys and donkey hybrids living in temperate regions to which they are not well-suited for, especially when care-providers are unaware of their special dietary needs.
