‘Flooring By Design’ Launches New Store with Special Giveaway for Lucky Family
When Laurie Woods first entered theFlooring By Design store in
Algonquin Commons, she was truly “justlooking.” She was intrigued to find aflooring store amongst the fashion anddécor retailers of the new open-air malland was curious to see inside.Additionally, she had in mind to gatherinformation for an upcoming homeflooring project.
“We needed carpet in the family room, and I just wanted to see what the storehad available,” Mrs. Woods explains.
With five children—ranging from 1st to8th grade, the Woods had needed newflooring in the family room for a while.Of course, the family is “always busy” andcautious of the budget. Thus, the projectwas on hold, awaiting the right timingand circumstances.
Amidst her casual browsing, Mrs. Woodsentered a special drawing for the chance

TODAY ’S FLOORING TRENDS
What are some top trends in flooringtoday? Here are insights on what yourneighbors are purchasing for theirfloors—straight from the Flooring ByDesign team.

VersaTILEToday’s tile options are vast and cus-tomizable. A wise investment forlong-term beauty and resale value, tilecan be installed in creative patterns, with trims and decorative pieces forenhancement. Homeowners are wel-coming larger sizes, mosaics anddeeper colors on floors and walls.
Carpet’s NEWtrals While homeowners continue to preferneutral colors in carpets, the trend is toadd a hint of interest for a more cus-tom, casual look. Carpets with tone ontone colorations, subtle patterns andflecks of color are great for adding adash of designer style to any room.
to win $5,000 of installed flooring. Sheleft the store pleased to have found someproducts for consideration, as well assome useful tips on measuring and pric-ing. When the “timing and circum-stances” aligned, she would be ready tomove forward.
To Mrs. Woods’ great fortune, timingand circumstance aligned in a most unex-pected way. Her name was randomlydrawn as the winner of Flooring ByDesign’s Grand Opening Giveaway. TheWoods family will soon have new carpetprofessionally installed in the familyroom—a much needed and appreciatedupdate for a large and active family.
“We’re so pleased such a deserving familywas the lucky winner,” says KirstenBaseley, partner in Flooring By Design.
The Woods prize—valued at $5,000 inproduct and installation services—will sup-ply them with the 1,000 square feet of car-pet they need to freshen the family room.As the center of their home’s activity, thenew carpet will greatly impact the feel ofthe gathering area for the five children.
“The kids are so excited,” says Mrs.Woods. “So is my husband!”

Most collectors of wine don’t startout with a wine cellar and try to fill
it up. They purchase a few bottles, whenthey find a vintage they like they mightpurchase a case. They may visit a wineryand purchase some wine. They may havefriends that share some of their“favorites”. Eventually the owner beginsto consider how he can store his growingcollection and maintain it properly.
This is where APEX Wine Cellars canbecome your wine cellar expert. We havebeen building wine cellars since 1984.We have designed, manufactured andinstalled wine cellars in all 50 states,Europe, and the Far East. Although webuild some very large cellars the majorityof our cellars are less than 1000 bottles. We have converted unused spaces such asold closets, or under the stairs, or underthe front porch, into cellars. The processis the same for wherever space you selectfor your cellar.
First, you need to decide if you want tocool the room. There are various wayssuch as through the wall (similar to awindow air conditioner), split systems(similar to a home air conditioner), andother unique equipment designed to overcome a specific problem. You want tokeep the room at about 55-60 degreesand about 70% humidity.
Second, you need to properly vapor bar-rier and insulate the room. A 6ml plasticvapor barrier needs to cover all the walls& ceiling. Then you need to apply R13insulation to the walls and R19 insulationto the ceiling. You can then apply eitherdry wall, T&G wood paneling, or stone
for a finish surface depending on the lookyou are trying to achieve.
Third, you will need to install an exteriorgrade door. Remember you are trying tobuild a room size refrigerator so you donot want any cold air escaping around thedoor. If you have a viewing window itmust be thermal pane.
Fourth, you can select anything exceptcarpeting for your floor covering.
Even if you choose not to cool the room, build it like you were going to cool it.Later you may change your mind. It isrelatively cheep, in the beginning, to addinsulation and vapor barrier and veryexpensive to add it later. If you are won-dering how big to build, we suggest thatyou count the number of bottles you cur-rently have and multiply it by three.
Apex offers four species of wood WesternRed Cedar, All Heart Redwood, and twotypes of Mahogany. They are structurallythe same the differences are primarilycolor. The racking material is unfinished(like the furniture you would get at thefinish it your self stores). The theory is ifyou paint, stain, or varnish the rackingthe odor, over time, will penetrate thecork and spoil the wine.
It makes no difference if you are lookingfor a plain storage room or a show placewhere you can bring friends. The con-struction specifications are the same.
If the time has come to get organized, give us a call and we would be happy toassist you through the process.

T HE THREE CRITERIAOF INTERIOR DESIGN
Congratulations on your new home! Getting a new home is one of the most exciting events we ever experience in life. But, now that you have your new place, how are you going to decorate it?
Interior design has three basic criteria: allinteriors are financial, functional and aes-thetic. These three concerns should beaddressed in that order. No matter howlarge or small your home is, establishing aproper budget is always your first topic ofbusiness.
But, how do you go about determining abudget? Follow these simple guidelinesand you will have a handle on how toproperly budget for your interior design.
FINANCEStep OneThe cost of the home is the first numberis our starting point. Take the retailprice of the home and multiply it by15%. That will give you the totalamount of money to allocate for yourentire interior design. This includeseverything, from soup to nuts, or fromfurniture to silverware.
Over the years I have seen this formulawork time and again. If you budget only10% of the price of the home, the homelooks partially empty and under-decorat-ed. If you budget 20%, the home looksostentatious and over-decorated.
Also, subtract the price of the items youare bringing with you from the 15% fig-ure. If you are bringing leather sofas, abedroom set, dining set, mattresses andbox springs, etc., these need to be sub-tracted from the 15% to arrive at a cor-rect budget. If you are entirely redeco-rating, which, of course, is rare, 15%invested over the years will completeyour design.
RE/MAX Renowned Properties 7
Step TwoTake the figure arrived at in Step One,and divide it by the number of rooms inthe home. Be sure to include bathroomsin this figure. For example, say the homecost $100,000.00 and has seven rooms.$100,000.00 x 15% is $15,000.00,equaling your total budget. This figuredivided by 7 (the number of rooms)equals $2143.00 per room. Voila! Younow have a budget for each room.
You next take this figure and “fudge” it abit. Take budget money from the small-er, less important rooms and allocatemore funds for the important rooms inthe home.
You now have financial guidelines as youdecorate your home. You will know thefigure you are working with as a budgetand, as you decorate (for rarely do peopledecorate an entire home all at once) you
have a starting point for answering yourfinancial concerns.
FUNCTIONThe second criteria listed above is func-tionality. As LeCorbusier said, “A home isa machine for living.” Buckminster Fullerlikened the home to a “capsule for living.”
When thought of in these terms, thehome is a machine. A machine mustfunction properly or it is of no use to theowner. Your home needs to function onmany levels.
Determine how many people will beoccupying the home. You also will wantto know what specific needs these peoplehave and how you accommodate them. This may sound like an easy, rote ques-tion; of course, you know how manypeople will be living there! However, acouple with small children will have cer-
8 RE/MAX Renowned Properties
tain functional requirements that differversus two empty nesters whose childrenare grown.
There are also your guests and visitors toconsider. Do family members live out oftown and need a place to stay when visit-ing? If so, you need a spare bedroom or asofa sleeper. Are holiday get-togethersheld in your home? Do you serve sitdown dinners, or do you serve buffetstyle? Do you entertain often and, if so,how many people need to be seated?
As you ponder the functional aspects ofyour home, you begin to learn yourfinancial priorities. What items are mostimportant to get your new home up andrunning the quickest?
For example, what direction does thehome face? If it has a southwest expo-sure, window treatments will be impor-tant to protect your furniture and carpet-ing from sun damage. If it faces north, perhaps you should choose brighter wallcolors to provide balance for the lack ofnatural sunlight.
Each room in your home should have itsfunctionality determined before you dec-orate. Often, and one of the best ways to
approach a space, a room will have mul-tiple functions. Say you have youngerchildren in school and would like a placefor them to do homework in an area thatyou can monitor and help them. Perhapsa space carved out in the Family Roomfor computer or desk would solve yourchallenge.
AESTHETICSEven though the “look” of the home is ourfinal concern, in overall emotional andfunctional effect, this has great impact. The first thing to do when consideringthe “design” of your interiors is to choosea motif.
A motif can be anything. It can reflect thearea in which you live (New EnglandCottage Style, the Southwest Look), itcan be historically relevant (18thCentury, Victorian or Arts and Crafts) orit can be a “fantasy,” a way in which youwould like to live (Tuscan Style is popu-lar now).
Another way to determine motif is tothink about people, places or things thatbring you joy and happiness. Perhapsyou were close to your grandmother andshe always wore lilac. Whenever you seelilac, you think of her. You can incorpo-rate this color into your color schemeand bring a little of that childhood joyback into your life.
The family is centered on the home.Surround yourself with pictures of lovedones and you never feel alone. Find a pri-vate space (everyone needs a room oftheir own!) for rest and recovery in a sparebedroom or study where many of theobjects with great meaning for you(Awards, your children’s early drawings, etc.) are there to remind you of theimportance of the house as home.
COLOR THERAPY 101Color is the next hurdle most homeown-ers face. There are some basic rules ofColor Theory that will help.
THE LAW 60-30-10 Think of a man’s suit when dressed for-mally. 60% of the outfit’s color is the suititself, jackets and slacks. The 30% color isrepresented by the shirt and the 10% col-oration of the outfit is the tie.
Think about people, places or things that bring you joy and happiness.
RE/MAX Renowned Properties 9RE/MAX Renowned Properties 9
Use this formula when choosing colorsfor a room. Pick a color for the 60%(walls, floors), a 30% color (say, theupholstery or drapes) and a 10% color(perhaps a spray of flowers or decorativethrow pillows).
If you try this handy formula, yourrooms will be perfectly colored everytime! Why this works is anybody’s guess, perhaps it is human nature to want to seea unifying color (the 60%), a color pro-viding visual interest (30%) and a dashof accent color (the 10%). Think of theten percent as jewelry on a woman’s out-fit and notice how jewelry makes theoutfit “come to life.”
COLOR SCHEMESThere are two basic color schemes thehomeowner can select from when deco-rating. There are others, but stickingwith the basics makes for a beautifulinterior. Think back to your high schoolphysics class. There you were intro-duced to the Color Wheel. Wheel ondown to the paint store and pick one upfor yourself.
Colors that appear on the Color Wheelopposite one another are called comple-mentary colors; such as Red oppositeGreen, Yellow opposite Blue.Complementary color schemes tend to bemore formal and create visually activespaces. Complementary schemes, due totheir inherent formality, are often seen inLiving Rooms and Dining Rooms.
Colors that are next to each other on theColor Wheel are called analogous colorschemes, i.e.; Yellow is next to Green,Blue is next to Green, Red is next toOrange. Analogous color schemes aremore sedate in feel and tend to be lesschallenging to the viewer. These are bestused in areas designated for rest andrecovery such as Family Rooms orMaster Bedrooms.
CREATING COLOR FLOWThe question most often asked by home-owners is, “How do I create color flow inmy new home?” It’s as easy as 60-30-10!
Say you have decorated your living roomin the 60-30-10 formula described above. The way to create color flow is to takeone of those colors, say the 60%, and
translate it into another room in a differ-ent “medium.”
For example, the living room walls arepainted yellow. Take that yellow colorfrom the living room walls and “restate” itin other ways, say, as dining chair seatcovers. Now, the 10% color in the diningroom is yellow. You then “pull” the othercolors in the living room space and plugthem into the two percentages left, the60% and the 30%.
The nineteenth century pundit EdgarGuest said, “It takes a heap o’ livin’ to makea house a home.” When moving into a newhome, we often bring a heap o’ living withus. Making your new house a home takesa little bit of budgeting, a look at thehomes many uses, a smattering of designsavvy and a lot o’ love. Enjoy.

One common error of many new home purchasers is that they do not fully
explore their mortgage options before they purchase their new home.
Many often simply call their existing mortgage company or bank,
which may have limited programs available, then simply give them
what their parents have had, a long-term fixed rate mortgage. This may
have been fine for their parents, but this is the 21st century and there
are now many more options available to today’s home buyer.
Regardless of any borrower’s situation, Diamond Home Mortgage
Corporation can offer more choices and will work to insure that every
customer has the information and professional guidance necessary to
purchase a home in today’s dynamic lending environment. Diamond
Home Mortgage’s consultants are professional, courteous and licensed
by the State of Illinois and able to help anyone purchase their new
home with the confidence that a well informed decision can offer.
Diamond Home Mortgage Corporation is an Equal Credit Lender and an Illinois Residential MortgageLicnesee, located at 519 N Cass Ave., Suite 400, Westmont, IL (630) 598-0360.
