at Tales From the Desk of the General Manager

    Dear Member,

The Club just hosted our 18th Anniversary Party, and if you were at the Club this past week, you may have noticed all of the preparations required to successfully host this event. If you were able to attend the event, I hope that you enjoyed your-self; we certainly had a great time working it.

As we approach the midway point for the 2011 season, our membership drive is not over. The Club has welcomed 41 new Social Members and 15 new Golf Members. Andy Wil-son will be reporting in July on the Club’s economic outlook. From a revenue standpoint, we need more Members and outside events. The management staff has done a good job managing the operational costs associated with running the Club.

Last Saturday and Sunday, the Club had to close the main pool due to a child having an accident in it. While this was not only a major inconvenience for the membership, it was a huge revenue loss for the Club. I thought it would be a good time to remind the mem-bership of several very important pool policies/rules that need to be followed.

    1. Children who are not potty trained are not allowed in the main pool. Children in swim diapers are only allowed in the baby pool.

    2. Members are permitted one towel per person when visiting the pool; children are not allowed unlim-ited towels. Recently, Rob Anderson, our Facilities Engineer, and I discovered piles of clean towels that kids had placed in the shower stalls and then turned the showers on.

    3. Members are responsible for their children at all

    times when at the pool.

    4. Ball playing is restricted to the basketball area behind the pool. Lacrosse sticks are not permitted in the pool area at any time.

5.Members leaving the pool area are required to have a cover-up on. Children should not leave the pool without a shirt on.

While these rules seem straight forward it is impera-tive that the membership follow them to ensure that all Members have a positive trip to the pool on every occasion.

Last week the Club opened a new service for Mem-bers, called the “Kid Zone.” This short-term babysit-ting service is designed to allow Members the option to have staff watch their children between the ages of 3-9, while they use the Club’s facilities. Since launch-ing the program, I have received several emails and voicemails requesting the hours be expanded. This service is a pilot program and we will be offering eve-ning hours after Labor Day. The overall success of the program will be gauged by Member usage, so if the service is busy, we will offer it more often. If the us-age is low, expanding the hours will be difficult to do.

After just completing our Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament, the staff is very proud of their effort and the success last weekend turned out to be. I have received numerous positive comments and emails about the event. Chris Harriman and his staff pro-vided vastly improved golf course conditions. I would like to thank Scott Segrist, Chair, for all his efforts to organize this event. Everyone’s efforts resulted in a fantastic event. Congratulations to R.L. Gladden and John Warner for being the 2011 overall winners. We cannot wait until next year!

    Sincerely,

    Joe

    “Watch and Learn”

At my first golf-related job, in addition to my everyday duties, I also worked a couple shifts as the breakfast cook - I know...picture that!

Growing up with golf, I learned a lot about the

business and I also learned a lot that I didn't ever

think I would learn, such as how to cook omelets!

When I was in charge of the outside operations at

The Breakers in Palm Beach, not only was I in charge

of the staff but I was also a golf course starter,

ranger, and much more. I have also worked at PGA

Tour events, dealing with the driving range, golf shop

merchandising, player assistance, and more. The list

of skills I have picked up along the way are many:

tournament management, logo design, sewing, gift

wrapping...a lot to name. When it came to the game,

I think I learned a lot about golf itself from caddying.

I have always enjoyed caddying. It is something that I

started at a young age. It gave me a greater appre-

ciation and understanding when I was providing the

advice instead of the one doing the execution. I have

caddied for several golfers attempting to qualify for

both the Men's and Women's United States Opens.

Most of those who I have caddied for have been

amateur but I have caddied for some professionals

as well. I have had the opportunity to meet some

amazing golfers and I was even fortunate enough to

play a practice round with Natalie Gulbis. I think that I

learned the most from watching the ladies who made

their efforts to qualify for The Open. They are

awesome and here are a few things that I think can

be learned from their skillful games.

The first thing that comes to mind is their uncanny

ability to put the ball in play off of the tee. Although

some of the ladies do not hit it very far, you can be

fairly certain the ball is going to be somewhere down

the middle. I remember one year I caddied in the

same group as LPGA golfer Katherine Hull. After the

36 holes of qualifying was over, I remember thinking

how well she hit her tee shots. Looking back, I real-

ized that she hadn't missed a single fairway all day!

She went on to qualify that year. Keep track of the

number of fairways you hit the next time you play and

see how it reflects on your total score.

I was always impressed by how well the qualifiers

were able to recover after hitting a bad shot. I would

see a golfer hit a shot and think that she is going to

be in a world of trouble for her next shot. Before you

knew it, she was walking off the green with a par, or

at worst, a bogey. It is important to make sure that a

poor shot is not compounded with another poor or

risky shot. Do your best to eliminate those big scores

on the card. Putting the ball back in play in the best

position to make a successful recovery is a must! All

it takes is one good shot to get you back in the hole.

Finally, and maybe more prominently, is their putting.

When I was caddying in the qualifiers, I felt like

almost any putt could go in at any time. It was the

craziest feeling but I felt like it was the truth. One of

the amateurs I caddied for, Jennifer Hong, was one of

    the best putters I

    have ever seen.

    She made it look

    so easy. For

    those who did not

    hit the ball very

    far, there was an

    added important

    on short game,

    especially put-

    ting. Take some

extra time and work on your short game. Work on the

weaker areas to strengthen them and work on your

stronger areas to make them even better yet. You

would be surprised what an effect it can have!

at Tales Golf GREEN UPDATE Chris Harriman, Golf Course Superintendent

June was a great month for the Golf Course. The dry weather at the beginning, allowed for some solid root growth before the first test of summer came at us. We swept the heat out the door and were awarded with a few 50 degree nights and some much needed rain. The summer heat will now return and stick around for a while. The Green Department will con-tinue to focus on the health of the Golf Course and do every-thing possible to maintain and improve the current condition of the Course.

Hopefully you have been able to follow along with the Green Department Blog. I will usually update it on Saturdays at the very least. There are tons of pictures and descriptions about our practices out on the Course. As always, I enjoy hearing your feedback and fielding your questions and ideas on how to make our facility better. I hope to see you out on the Course!

THANK YOU CATTAIL JUNIOR GOLF! A special thanks goes out to all of our Junior

Golfers who donated their time to help

    make the 2011 Men’s Invitational a truly

great event. The boys volunteered their time

each of the three days the event was held,

and served as fore caddies on several holes

helping to spot balls. They made a few

players very happy in locating their errant

shots, and a few players not so happy!

    Junior Golf Update

    Greg Stark, Head Golf Professional

Junior Golf at Cattail is off to a flying start

this summer! I am sure all of you have no-

ticed the juniors out and about at Cattail. It

is fun to see the future of golf and our fu-

ture Members develop into fine young

women and men. With that development

comes a few opportunities as these young-

sters get to know and understand the game

of golf. I would like to thank you, our

    Membership, for your continued support

    and patience.

We have several different programs geared

towards junior players of all abilities and

ages. From our All-sports Camp to our

Junior Golf Camp to our Little Tykes pro-

gram, we are sure to find a fit for every-

one. Also, do not forget about our Girls-

only Clinic which is extremely popular. We

are one of the only clubs in Maryland to

offer a girls-specific program. We still

have space available in all of these camps,

please call the Golf Shop or visit the web-

    site for more details.

Our Junior Interclub team is off to a great

start; the 18 hole group won their first

match vs. Montgomery CC and the 9 hole

group had a tough go the first match losing

to Lakewood. Please join us in wishing

both teams much success throughout the

    season.

Golf Tip of the Month ‘How to Play in the Wind’

    Ricky Serrano, Director of Instruction

One of the biggest mistakes I see when amateurs are playing in the wind, is making too aggressive of a full swing. It almost seems that they try to overpower the wind; and that is not possible!

Example: A golfer faces a shot from 125 yards into the wind. They calculate that the shot will be playing approximately 135 yards. They pull their 135 yard club, make a full swing, and the balls lands 25 yards short of the flagstick.

The reason this happened is that the harder you strike the golf ball, the more it spins. The spin cre-ates lift and the lift leads to height, which forces the shot to end up shorter than expected.

Here are a few keys to remember when you are playing golf in the wind:

Always take far more club than you need and hit the ball gently.

Narrow your stance slightly as this helps to hit down on the ball creating compression.

Take a little less than a full swing and keep the follow through nice and compact.

Grip down on the club slightly.

“Swing easy when it is breezy.”

at Tales Tennis A WORD FROM THE PRO Joe Mattingly Good Luck to all the USTA teams that will be representing Cattail in the play-offs and the Districts.

Junior Team Tennis has started and we have over 180 juniors competing. With the large number of juniors on the courts, especially in the evenings, it is essential that you use the online court reservation system to ensure court availability.

Thanks to all who participated in the Howard County Challenge Cup; Barbara Fasteau, Lynda Bittner, Susan and Ken Heydt, Don Reuwer and John Kelly. Thanks to our Tennis Staff - Tim, Mike and Christine for helping to coach the team. Cattail did not win the Cup this year but did come in a strong 2nd place.

JUNIOR COURT ETIQUETTE Please take the time to remind your junior tennis player of the following tennis court etiquette reminders:

Remember to reserve a court and use your bag tag when on the court.

Proper tennis attire and tennis shoes are required while on the courts.

Be sure to wait until play has stopped, or paused, before crossing the court to retrieve one of your tennis balls.

Please be sensitive to match play on the adjacent courts in terms of your voice volume level.

Please pick up all balls, trash, water bot-tles, cups, etc., so the courts are ready for play for the next person when you leave.

USTA NEWS Our Adult USTA summer season is coming to a close. Over 160 matches will have been played on our courts when the season is over. At the time of this newsletter, some of the winners of the levels have been decided. The play-

offs will be held July 1-8. Winners of the playoffs will get a bid to the Mary-land District Tournament being held the weekend of July 15-17.

Team Cattail, captained by Catherine Taylor and Esther Price, won the 2.5 women’s league. They are a second year team and finished with a 10-2 re-cord. Karen Valenze and Eileen Dietz captained the ‘Zebras’ and are currently undefeated with a 12-0 record. The 3.5 women are still battling for first place with Heather Dull’s ‘Volley Girls’ sport-ing a 9-1 record while Lena Munther-Andersen’s ‘XX-Factor’ is chasing them with a 9-2 record. All of the 4.0 women’s teams are in a position to win their level and proceed to the playoffs.

The 3.0 and 3.5 men’s leagues have a few remaining matches. Both levels have been clinched. Chris Rachuba’s 3.0 and Espen Andersen’s 3.5 teams will proceed to the playoffs in Columbia.

The 4.0 men, captained by Don Reuwer are playing out of Carroll County and are in contention to win their league. They are currently in a very close sec-ond place. If they take over first place and win the league, they will advance directly to the district tournament.

USTA FALL COMBO LEAGUES Players are now forming their fall Combo Teams. We will offer 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5 levels for the women and 6.5 and 7.5 for the men. The season will run from the first week in August until the middle of September. Email Julie Seanez as soon as possible if you would like to captain a team or need help finding a team to play with: [email protected]

BAG TAGS Members who use the tennis courts, must hang a bag tag on the rack outside the tennis building. If you need to order

bag tags for your family members, please email [email protected] The first tag for each family member is free; there is a fee to replace lost tags.

You are welcome to demo racquets from the Pro Shop and there is a $5 rental fee to demo the 2011 racquets. Please sign out a racquet if you are demoing it so we know where the rac-quets are at all times.

Please be responsible and pick up all balls if you are using the ball machine or playing on an open court. We have had several instances where our pros have had to pick up entire carts of balls that were left on the court.

TIP OF THE MONTH When you think you should win a point but your opponent somehow turns the tables on you, you tend to get a little reckless. You attempt to incorrectly hit a winner when the possibility of a win-ner is no longer open. Your mind is still thinking, “I had him, this was my point! It is crucial that you not fall into this mental pitfall of match play. If your op-ponent gets himself out of trouble, do not attempt to win the point with one swing of the racket. Mentally move back to your consistent play strategy and wait for another opening before you go for a winner.

Either you recklessly aim for the wrong shot at the wrong time and lose a high percentage of points, or you increase your percentage of wins by staying pa-tient and poised. Restarting a point is an art in itself that often takes many years to master. It requires mental con-trol and mastery of your emotions. You will find yourself winning a few points that you normally would have lost. It may be subtle, but those points could easily be the difference between a vic-tory or a loss.
