4-H Week of Fun Challenges August 10 - 15, 2020

Help Wanted! Clark County will be hosting Farm Technology Days in July 2022 at Roehl Acres in Loyal. There will be many opportunities for volunteering to assist with this state farm show - one area is the Youth Tent. The youth tent is a major part of the show which was started by a county 4-H agent in 1987. Cindy Kolzow is the chairperson for the Youth Tent and she is looking for help on the youth tent committee. This committee will oversee all activities associated with the youth tent area from vendors to stage performers to educational events, etc. The focus of the youth tent will be careers in agriculture, ag safety, and 4-H/FFA projects. If you would be interested in assisting with the planning of this event please contact Cindy Kolzow at [email protected] or 715-613-4361. There next meeting is planned for: August 6

7:00 p.m. West Side Park - Loyal (on Highway 98)

Fairground Livestock Barn Update

Demolition and construction are underway for the new livestock barn. With the 2020 Clark County Fair being cancelled, movement on the project is progressing sooner. As of the printing of this newsletter, the horse barns have been removed. Removal of the beef barn is planned for October. The Forestry and Parks Department will be meeting with contractors within the week to finalize the construction timeline. Within the next couple of weeks, plans are for dirt being moved and the groundwork being prepped. Concrete will be poured this fall. The contractor is hoping to start working on the building this fall and continue throughout the winter. Decisions with regards to pens and stalls need to be finalized soon. Forestry and Parks along with the Livestock Committee are looking at options. They are working with county businesses on materials being used and construction of the pens/stalls. While the fundraising committee met the initial goals for funding the barn, there still are costs that weren’t identified in the initial building proposal. As you know, the livestock committee had decided to take an additional 2% in commission on the sale to assist with the costs of the new barn and maintenance. We are looking at significant costs associated with pens/stalls and possibly scales. Anyone interested in donating towards the pur-chase of these items, please send your dona-tion to the Clark County Community Founda-tion. We are looking at the option of offering naming rights or a donation in memory of someone for a pen or stall. More details to come in the next 4-H newsletter. If you have questions about the project or want to discuss in-kind donations, please contact Rick Dailey from the Forestry and Parks Department at 715-743-5142.

Duct Tape Wallet Grades: 4-12

In this activity, kids will practice measuring skills, become familiar with duct tape, and explore how to use it to create a homemade wallet. Kids are encour-aged to be creative and construct multiple wallets with different colors and types of duct tape, if time and supplies allow. Supplies Duct tape (2 colors) Ruler Scissors OR Xacto knife/rotary cutter* Hard surface/cutting board *Safety Tip – when working with young children it is recommended that you use scissors for this project. Only when there can be immediate adult assistance should Xacto knife or rotary cutter be used. Cuts can happen quickly - use caution. TIP – your scissors will get sticky quickly. Use the alcohol wipes to clean off the scissors and keep working. Do this as often as needed. Directions 1. See Figures 1 - 5

Cut out four 8½ inch strips of one color duct tape.

Flip one piece of duct tape over and place another on top, sticky sides together, so they match up.

Take another piece of duct tape and place it over the two pieces you just put together, overlapping them so it is about 3 inches wide.

Lay the last piece of duct tape over the top so it covers the sticky piece.

Repeat. This makes the two sides of the wallet. 2. Line up the two wallet sides together and trim them so there is no sticky part is showing and they match up. You may have to trim them a bit to get them

to match up exactly. 3. See Figures 6 - 9

Measure one 8 ½ inch piece of tape. Cut it in half length-wise. Cut one strip in half width wise as well.

Use one half to tape the bottom of the wallet walls together. Trim the excess.

Use the remaining pieces to tape the small ends of the wallet together. Trim the excess. 4. Repeat step 1 with the second color of duct tape. Cut these pieces about 4 inches long. This will make the ID pocket of the wallet

(see Figures 10 - 12). 5. Making the Card Holders

Measure out four 4-inch pieces of tape.

Flip one piece of duct tape over and place another on top, sticky sides together, so they match up.

Repeat with the other two pieces.

Trim off all excess. 6. See Figure 13

Cut out three 4-inch pieces of duct tape of the first color. Cut all pieces in half length-wise.

Fold the wallet in half to find the center. 7 See Figures 14-16

Measure the card and ID holders to be sure they fit on one half of the wallet.

Using the strips of tape you just cut out, tape the two card holder pieces and place them on the right side of the wallet; stagger them like card holders in a regular wallet.

Tape both sides and the bottom. Cut off the excess tape.

Tape the ID pocket piece onto the wallet on the bottom, outside and top, of the right side of the wallet.

Be careful not to tape the money pocket shut.

Trim the excess tape.

Fold back together. Now, you have a duct tape wallet!

Learn About Nutrition with Play Dough Grades: Pre-K-2

In this activity, young kids will identify healthy foods alongside the classic children’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and practice what they’ve learned by using a simple recipe to make play dough to mold the shapes of healthy foods. Supplies

MyPlate mini poster

Poster board or a few sheets of paper

Tape

Marker, pen or crayon

A copy of the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, or watch the animated film on Youtube If using the The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, print pictures of the book’s foods Preparation Collect pictures of healthy and unhealthy foods using the internet or magazines. Find the following pictures to go along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar book: apple, pear, plum, strawberries, orange, chocolate cake, ice cream cone, pickle, cheese, salami, lollipop, cherry pie, sausage, cupcake, watermelon, and green leaf. Alternately you can include this step in the activity as a scavenger hunt through magazines. 1. MyPlate Food Groups

a. Hang up the poster of the MyPlate (or show it on your computer screen). Point to and name the various food groups and what belongs in each of them. Name a few food items from each group.

b. Show different pictures of food, both healthy and unhealthy. Discuss if each item would be something that would be good to eat every day or some-thing that would not be healthy to eat every day.

c. Label one poster board or sheet of paper “Healthy to Eat Every Day” and the other one “Not Healthy to Eat Every Day.” Tape the food pictures in the correct category.

2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar a. Draw a MyPlate on the poster board or paper and divide it into the five different food categories. b. Read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle aloud with a family member. With each food the caterpillar eats, place the matching food

picture in the correct category of the MyPlate as they are mentioned in the book. c. Discuss if the caterpillar ate healthy verses non healthy food and how it affected the way he felt. Discuss your child’s favorite foods and if those are

healthy foods.

Make and Mold Play Dough Ingredients to make 1 cup of playdough

Mixing bowl(s)

Glass, heatproof, microwave-safe 2-cup measuring cup

Spatula or mixing spoon

Aluminum foil, parchment paper or wax paper

1 cup flour

1/4 cup salt

3/4 cup of water, minus 3 tablespoons

3 tablespoons of lemon juice

1 tablespoon cooking oil Optional: a few drops of food coloring or 2 packets of kool-aid to add color and fragrance Directions: a. Measure the water and lemon juice into a heatproof, microwavable 2-cup measuring cup. Heat in the microwave until just boiling, about three minutes. b. While it’s heating, mix together the flour and salt. c. Add color:

add desired food coloring to the heated water and lemon juice mixture

if using Kool Aid, very slowly (the mixture will foam a bit) pour the kool-aid packets into the hot water and lemon juice mixture.

Add additional food coloring to intensify the color if desired. d. Slowly pour the liquid into the flour and salt mixture and stir with a spatula until it just barely begins to form a dough. e. Drizzle the tablespoon of cooking oil over the dough and stir again until it forms a ball. At this point, you may want to knead the dough with your hands. f. As the dough cools it will thicken and become less sticky. Once the dough is completely cooled, you may add flour a tablespoon at a time until it is the

desired consistency. g. Allow the dough to cool on a sheet of aluminum foil, parchment or wax paper. h. Repeat process to create different colors. i. Divide the play dough so you have a few different colors. Be creative with the play dough and make it into healthy foods! j. Discuss why it is important to eat healthy foods and why it is ok to have treats occasionally.
