Rusk County 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest January 7th

Congratulations to Emily Hildebrant and Amanda Hildebrant on their Blue Ribbons in the Rusk County 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest and for completing the "Consumer Decision Making Project" They will advance and represent Rusk County 4-H at the District 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest. Good Luck to these 4-H'ers! In this consumer education project, 4-H'ers learn how to compare prices, test for quality and make purchases based on facts and research. They also improve their: Money management skills Smart purchasing skills Decision-making skills

In this contest, 20 Texas agricultural products are selected and ex-hibited at separate stations. 4-H'ers select the correct identification of each product from four possible answers. Then there is one mul-tiple choice question pertaining to the product on display. This sec-ond question can be general to the industry that produced the prod-uct and specific to the individual product that is on display. This is a QUICK contest with 30 seconds allowed at each station to answer both questions.

Rusk County 4-H'ers participated in a mock "Ag ID Contest" this morning at the county food show workshop on January 9th.

Following the Awards Ceremony at the East Texas State Fair – Academic Rodeo – Youth Fashion, a group photo was taken off all the contestants with the Mistresses of

Ceremonies Allison Smith and Elizabeth Armstrong from the KETK FOX 51 News Team.

Rusk County 4-H'ers participated in a mock "4-H Food Challenge" event at the county Food Show Workshop on January 9th.

The 4-H Food Challenge is a “highly charged” foods experience. This contest, modeled after such competitions as the Food Network’s “Iron Chef,” challenges teams of 4-H members to create a dish using only a pre-determined number of ingredients. From these ingredients, team members must identify and prepare the dish, then make a presentation about it to the judges. The presentation will include information about the serving size, nutritional value, and cost of the dish. The 4-H Food Challenge allows 4-H members to demonstrate their culinary and food safety skills to judges.

The team members are pictured with their culinary creation after their interview with the judges. Both teams did a GREAT JOB!

Until next time —
