17. Dogs in Cars on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events. • When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is

on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams. • If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea

at all. • The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with

lots of water available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around

the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have

plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for

extended lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare.

WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.

18. Not for Competition: Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. Dog Fouling: Any owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is requested to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club Licensed Show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches. Adequate receptacles for the disposal of such fouling will be provided.

20. Entries: All postal entries must be made on or before 3rd May 2013 (Postmark) upon the entry form enclosed for that purpose together with the correct entry fee to the Show Secretary by the above date or the entry will not be accepted. If required evidence of despatch must be given. Entries may also be made online at www.dog.biz (Online entries close: 12 noon on 13th May 2013). All dogs must be registered or transferred at the Kennel Club before the Show. Every exhibitor making an entry or entries for this Show shall be deemed to have agreed to abide by the Kennel Club Rules and Show Regulations and it is on this understanding only that entries are accepted.

21. All exhibits must be accompanied. The Committee cannot accept or dispatch unaccompanied dogs.

22. Exclusion of Dogs: The Committee are empowered to exclude or remove any dog which is not in a fit state for exhibition either from disease, vice, natural or other causes and if such exclusion takes place, either before or after the dog is judged, the entry fee will be forfeited.

23. Judges: Should the judge be prevented from fulfilling his/her engagement the Executive Committee reserve the right of appointing another judge to fulfil his/her duties. The judges will be instructed and empowered to withhold the prize(s) in any class if in his/her opinion the dog(s) exhibited do not possess sufficient merit. The judge is not empowered to give prizes beyond those offered in this Schedule of prizes, and such awards shall not have any value or count as a win except with the consent of the Secretary, first obtained in writing.

24. All Rules and Regulations or Definitions and Instructions of the nature of rules and regulations printed for convenience in other parts of this Schedule, shall be deemed to be the Regulations of the Committee and shall have the same effect as if they formed part of these Regulations.

25. All entries with fees or enquiries should be addressed to the Show Secretary: Mr D Hunt, 21 Station Road, Otford, Sevenoaks, Kent TN14 5QU. Tel: 01959 523870.

the licensed venue including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches.b) The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club events must

at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches.

Judge’s CV –Ronnie Irving

I cannot remember a time without Border Terriers. I am a third generation Border person, my grandfather Wattie Irving having had his first in 1923 – given as a present to my father Andrew Irving. The family’s first champion was Ch Station Masher made up in 1929. My father and I both showed Wattie’s dogs until his death in the late 1960s. The first champion registered in my own name was Ch Bounty Tanner made up in 1968. (I bought him when he was aged 14 months for £20!). Five others followed in the ten subsequent years until I married Kate. These were Ch Arnton Fell, Ch Llanishen Penelope (bought from Denis Wiseman), Ch May Isle Misty, Ch South Box and Ch Din Merry. The Irving family never had a KC kennel name. After 1978 no more dogs were registered in my name. All of those with which I have been connected since then have been Dandyhows owned either by Kate or her mother Bertha Sullivan.

As far as judging the breed is concerned, I first awarded Challenge Certificates to Border Terriers in 1967 and the appointment to judge the Southern Border Terrier Club show this year will be the twenty-seventh such occasion and the second time I have judged the Southern Club’s show. I judged the breed at Crufts in 1977 and have also officiated at the Border Terrier Club of America’s National Specialty Show on three occasions, Montgomery County twice and the FCI World Dog Show on two occasions along with a number of other appointments for the breed in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands.

Except when we lived in the USA I wrote the Border Terrier breed notes in either Dog World or Our Dogs and did so fairly continuously from 1965 until I became chairman of the KC in 2002. Also, in 1969, the late Frank Jackson and I wrote the first book which had been published on the breed for about twenty years – it was published in the Foyles Handbook series.

My thanks go to the Committee of the Southern Border Terrier Club for doing me the honour of inviting me to judge the Club’s Championship Show this year.
