Vocabulary Focus

1. On our website, open “The Academic Collocations List” (under “Academic Vocabulary Lists”)

2. Under the column “Component I”, find the words “brief”, “briefly”, “wide”, and “widely”

3. Look at the collocations for those words under “Component II”) – in what section of an essay would you most commonly find many of those collocations? (Intro? Discussion? Abstract?)

4. Is there any further information you would like to know about those collocations?

5. Discuss with a partner.

New Beginnings!

• For your next assignment, you will need to write the introduction section for your final paper.

• Discuss with a partner: What have you learned so far about what makes an effective introduction?

• Will you be able to apply those ingredients in your final paper?
