WELCOME TO GRANTHAM 2016

At BFRS, we understand that transitioning from the military is probably the most difficult thing that most military leavers will do during their service, and it is made more difficult by the fact that everyone’s needs and requirements are different. A ‘one size fits all’ type solution, just will not tick all the boxes, that is why we have created a focal point, managed and facilitated through a variety of both online and offline platforms where the Armed Forces Community and the commercial world can engage with each other more easily.

One of those platforms is our ‘Transition Events Programme’ and today’s event is just part of that programme. I urge everyone to take full advantage of what it potentially offers, for the military visitor, there are a wide variety of employment and training opportunities, plus the variety of resettlement help, support and advice, including CV-writing assistance.

Our events facilitate one-to-one engagement and as usual, there is a diverse range of exhibitors here, all vetted to ensure they have the Service Persons interest at the heart of what they do. For the exhibitor, there will be visitors from various stages of resettlement/transition, who will not only be a potential benefit to you, but will benefit from engaging with you and your organisation, so I ask you to put your phones away, stand in front of your tables and talk to them, you have a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Whoever you are and no matter why you are at the event, there is something for you.

Finally, in order for us to improve what we offer, we ask you to give us your feedback, so please fill in the feedback form at reception or send us a follow up email.

Thank you and enjoy today’s event.

Harry Dean CEO of BFRS

BFRS ‘knows who knows’!

We reckon we know a thing or two about the transition from military to civilian life and if we don’t know, we probably know who does. We have been around since 2009 and in that time have helped 10’s of thousands to make a successful transition and we have also been instrumental in helping 100’s of commercial organisations reach military talent.

After completing 23 years’ service in the Army, Dougie chose to attend the Bristol Executive Management Programme (BEMP) at Bristol Management Centre as part of his resettlement package. Since his successful completion of the course he has become a Director in four thriving businesses.

“I hoped to gain a better understanding of Finance, Marketing and general Business insights.” Having been offered a job in UK manufacturing and wanting to ensure he could use his transferrable skills from his experience in the Army, Dougie attended the Bristol Executive Management Programme (BEMP). “The course gave me the essential skills and knowledge to then build my new career and so much more”.

Today’s event provides a huge variety of possibilities to someone making the transition from Military to Civilian life. These include employment, training, networking and support opportunities for Armed Forces personnel during all stages of their resettlement and beyond.

If you’re not sure where you want to work or what you want to do when leaving the forces, a careers fair can introduce you to a range of possibilities. Just don’t engage exhibitors in conversation unless you have at least some idea of what they do. Keep a copy of the event magazine with you for reference and chat to someone on the BFRS stand if you need a bit more guidance.

For most Service Leavers this will be new, so if you’re nervous, see this as an opportunity

Get the Most from Today’s Eventto practice speaking to hiring managers. Try and step outside your comfort zone by setting a personal target: identify two or three employers you want to speak to and prepare some questions beforehand.

After the event, make time to digest all the information you’ve gathered. Think about how you will use this to focus your search or enhance your applications.

Aim to get the contact details of people you have met. They can form part of your network not just for the immediate, but also for the long-term future.

If you think of a question later, contact the person you met to find out if they can help.

Most of all, have fun! Today is about enjoying yourself, meeting many new people and finding new career and training opportunities that may lead to long-term careers. Have fun, be confident and approach any and all exhibitors!

Centre at Headley Court allowed him to go on a world cruise with Claire in 2010. In the same year he was nominated for and won the Sun’s Military Award. In between he has cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats, skydived and made a number of appearances on behalf of service charities. He is currently an ambassador for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Andy now enjoys a career as a successful motivational speaker, helping others to move forward through adversity. This success is partly on the back of his book Standing Tall: The Inspirational Story of a True British Hero in which he fully describes his experience. Most recently, Andy has bought and runs a pub in his hometown of St Helens. We talked to him specifically about his rather unusual transition.

Did you enjoy your time in the Forces?

Yes. I did 13 years before I got injured. I climbed Kilimanjaro, walked through the Grand Canyon, lived in Germany, went up to the Arctic Circle in Canada – I went absolutely everywhere in the Army. I’ve no regrets about joining the Army, or anything else! If I had to do it all over again, I’d just do the same thing.

That is good to hear. Do others who have been injured feel that way?

Unfortunately you do get younger lads who have joined at 16, gone on tour at 18, been injured, and looked back with regret about joining the Forces. They didn’t get the chance to do all the amazing things you can actually do while you’re in the Services.

Some transitions are harder than others. I catch up with triple-amputee veteran, motivational speaker, and pub landlord Andy Reid.

‘The first thing I was aware of was a dust cloud all around me. I couldn’t hear anything. I looked down and couldn’t see my legs. My index finger was hanging off – I thought, ‘Well, I’m not losing that too,’ so I hung onto that. Then I called for some morphine.’

Sometimes the closest a civilian will get to understanding the true horrors of war is to talk to someone like former Corporal Andy Reid, 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. After stepping on an IED in Afghanistan in 2009, he lost both his legs and his right arm. Evacuated to the UK and the specialist military wing of Selly Oak Hospital, it was touch and go whether he would survive – but survive he did.

‘Before the accident I’d been writing to my cousin that I’d met an amazing girl, Claire, and that I was going to ask her to marry me. When I woke up on the ward and understood the extent of my injuries, I made marrying Claire my first goal, and I achieved it.’ Andy’s primary mindset when faced with challenge seems simply to be: keep moving forward.

And move forward he has. A pair of prosthetic legs fitted at the Defence Rehabilitation

Standing Tallby Jacquie McGeoch

Rather than relying upon a pension, however, you really have gone out there and made new careers for yourself. Would you say your Army training helped with that?

Well you get a lot of preparation in the Army. Especially getting to Corporal, I learned a lot of administration skills, and of course leadership. These skills can move across into civilian jobs. Running a bar, looking after my staff – that’s all chain-of-command stuff I already knew inside out from the Army and applied it to my business straight away with no problems.

And what about with regard to your motivational speaking?

It’s actually easier in some ways than speaking in the Army! When training men in the Army you get a pamphlet you have to learn, and if text is in red you have to say it. Doing all that certainly gave me the confidence to stand up and address people. But in motivational speaking, there’s nothing to learn – the story’s in my head because I lived it. I just stand up and say what happened!

I do a lot of corporate events where I’m teaching skills like leadership and discipline. When you’re in the Army you soak up skills like a sponge. I did some work with Network Rail and they told me it took their civilian drivers 18 months to learn to reverse their lorries into the yard. In the Army you learn that in 2 weeks!

What do you miss most about being in the Army?

Just the banter with the lads, really, and the camaraderie.

I remember reading your book and the banter was great – especially asking about your crown jewels when you first woke up after the injury!

Well it’s one of the first things you ask, haha! I think in the Army when you’re in bad situations it’s often the banter and the joking that gets you through it.

Your transition back to Civvy Street was unusual in that you didn’t take time off to explore courses and careers and so forth before leaving. How did you find it?

Being injured is easier in some ways. I spent months cycling between rehab at Headley Court and staying at home. It’s a slower return to Civvy Street. Compare that to the usual signing off, getting a year to do a pre-release course, then you’re out. Especially for the guys who have lived their whole time in the mess, suddenly they’re at home all the time – that’s a big change. I had a lot more time to think about the future while injured, and adjust to regular married life. I’m also on a War Pension due to the injuries, so there was less of a pressing need to find work immediately, which can be a big source of stress for Service-leavers.

But there are key differences in some areas. For example, in the Army, if someone doesn’t do something, you can just put them on guard duty or punish them some other way. In civilian work, you have to give them a warning or go through HR. So there’s a power structure in the Army whereby you can discipline people on the spot. In civilian work it’s slower, and you have to learn all that.

You’ve got a young son now. What would you say if he wanted to join the Army?

Yes, William. I’ve said from the start that if he wants to, he should go and do that, because it’s a fantastic career. As long as he’s happy, I’m happy!

Regarding injury, yes it can happen and end your career before it’s started. But injuries can happen to civilians, too. I’ve met some amazing civilian amputees, like my friend Stephen with whom I set up the charity www.weareaim.org. He was driving around Australia on holiday, someone came round the bend driving way too fast, crashed into him and he lost both his legs. Now we work with other amputees to help them deal with the changes they’re going through.

Since your injury you’ve done tons for charity including cycling the length of the country, you’ve got married and had a family, and you’ve started two successful careers. I remember when I was reading your book I thought, ‘This man is amazing. A lesser person would have given up.’

Some of my friends didn’t come back from Afghanistan. When you’ve been mates with someone for many years, and their life is taken away from them, but you’re still here, I think it’s disrespectful to them to NOT live your life to the full. That’s motivation enough for me.

Tell us about your pub!

It’s called the Cinema Bar and it’s in St Helens. It used to be a cinema back in the 1940s; we’ve converted it. It’s a nice wine bar with comfy Chesterfield sofas, similar to what we had in the mess. We do specialist continental and craft beers you won’t find in other bars. Come in, relax, have something special to drink, and have a nice chat!

Andy’s book, Standing Tall: The Inspirational Story of a True British Hero, is available in book shops and on Amazon.

Something that all those that have served in the Armed Forces will have done, is deploy on Operational Tours; but which Tour sticks in your mind more than any other? Memories can be good or bad, for my question let’s keep to the good memories.

Whilst serving I deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Iraq, with many countries visited in between. Which one holds the best memories? Which one could I call my favourite deployment? The answer has to be Iraq, although I did enjoy the others I feel what happens on tour stays on tour (If you know what I mean).

Why Iraq? Whilst on the Units shooting team competing in the BAGSAAM, I received a pleasant phone call from the Sqn Chief Clerk who informed me that I had been trawled to deploy to Shaibah in Iraq. After the initial shock I continued with the shooting competition, and finished in a very respectable 18th place.

28 days to sort myself out, deployment training, issue of Kit (some of it), pack room, bit of leave. The day had arrived to deploy, having never been to Iraq I was a little unsure of what to expect, I was deploying on Telic 4. Sitting in Hanover Airport in Germany thinking about the next 6 months, and what delights I will encounter whilst away. I started searching my pockets for my cigarettes as I did not know when I will get to have one next.

20 fags later and I was on the flight to Qatar. It was very quiet on the Tri-Star, which was very surprising as it was an afternoon departure. Having tried to have a forced sleep which was unsuccessful, the on-flight meal was placed in front of me by a girl who

obviously had not done her training with British Airways. Due to the flight not been full I was fortunate enough to get a second taste of the RAF cuisine, only because I was hungry not because it tasted nice.

After what felt like hours we finally touched down in Qatar. It was about 2am and still 30+ degrees, not the ideal conditions for a much wanted cigarette. A few hours went past and we were on the final leg of the trip into Basrah, Lights Off, Helmet and Body Armour on and the Herc just seemed to fall out the Sky. So here I am Basrah Airport, and not a single person with a little sign with my name on, who’s picking me up? Luckily for me the Dog Unit lads I did my pre-deployment training with were on the same flight so they dropped me of at HQNSE in Shaibah.

Having introduced myself to the QM, RQMS and the rest of the department I went for a well-earned sleep. Now this became more of a task than you could imagine, 50 degrees outside, air-con not working too well, which led to a half hour here and there throughout the night. Receipts and Issues was to be my job for the next 6 months and a bit of duty armourer every so often, with many other tasks that were thrown my way (no surprise as I was a Pioneer).

For those that deployed to Shaibah will know that the welfare facilities where pretty good, not once did I think I would get bored of Pizza Hut or Subway whilst deployed on operations, well in Iraq I did. There is only so much of it you can eat, but it always brought a smile to my face when the local came down the runway on his scooter with a stack of pizza’s on the back, which I will point out were not strapped down, relying on his riding ability to get them to us safe and sound.

One of the perks of working in the HQNSE was that every 3-4 weeks I had to visit Kuwait, there was no better feeling than stripping at the

#RobOnTheRoad – Operational Tours

Kuwait/Iraq border into shorts and T-shirt. Whilst in Kuwait, we had many jobs to do for the department not including a visit to the Palm Beach 5 Star Hotel (not saying we did not visit it). What an amazing place Kuwait is, hot sunny conditions, waterparks and to top it off KFC. On one of my visits I was asked to bring back an 18 piece bargain bucket for the MT lads, have you ever eaten something 2 hours after it had been purchased and had been travelling in 40-50 degree heat. It did not take long for the MT lads to destroy it, much to the shock of the onlookers.

As mentioned my initial job was Receipts and Issues, but one of the jobs that no one else wanted was the burning of paper. Having been briefed that I was not allowed to leave the burn pit until what I was burning had burnt and the ashes had gone out, I perfected the art of making this small task last a couple of hours. This had been noticed by the QM, who sent one of the other lads with me on one occasion to assist. On leaving HQNSE I instructed him to get 4 litres of water whilst I picked up 2 wooden pallets, he asked what I needed the pallets for? I replied, I’m not allowed to leave the burn pit until its all burnt and the ashes have gone out, “I see” was his response.

On arrival at the burn pit, I put the bag of paper down and placed the two pallets either side, set it alight, took my T-shirt off, dropped my trousers to my shorts and laid on the back of the vehicle, and began to enjoy the glorious weather. My colleague looking very shocked

asked, “what are you doing?” I told him the bag of paper takes 30 mins to burn, but those pallets take about 2 hours, and I need to top my tan up.

My tour of Iraq has given me so many memories, I met with many people from various Cap badges who I would not normally have served with and made some great friends. The burn pit story is just one of many things that made Iraq my favourite tour. I could go on and on about Iraq, but unfortunately I am a Civi now and I just don’t have the time to write about them all.

Whilst serving out in Iraq, I learned so much from those I worked with which I feel made me a better person. If the Armed Forces can work so hard and so well in those conditions experienced out in Iraq, they can work anywhere and for any company.

Registering for ELCs From 1st April 2016 the Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) and Further Education and Higher Educa-tion schemes have seen some changes.

The key changes to the schemes are as follows:

• All Service Personnel (SP) currently in service will be auto-enrolled to be eligible for both Schemes, as will future SP on completion of Phase 1 training

• A new ELC payment has been created: an aggregated lower tier payment, a single payment of up to £3000 for those with 6 or more years of qualifying service completed on or after 1 Apr 16, which will count as all 3 payments.

• The qualifying service required for lower tier payments and FEHE will increase from 4 to 6 years from 1 Apr 2017. SP who have already accumulated 4 years qualifying service before 1 Apr 2017 will keep their entitlement to use lower tier payments and FEHE.

• Post service access to ELC and FEHE, for all those leaving on or after 1 Apr 2016, will be reduced to 5 years.

• Those who left between 1 Apr 11 and 31 Mar 16 (both dates inclusive) will have until 31 Mar 21 to use ELC or FEHE – 5 years from now. Anyone who left before 01 April 2011 will retain 10 years of post-service access.

What you can use ELCs for • You can claim up to £1,000 (Lower Tier) or £2,000 (Higher Tier) per financial year

(31st March – 1st April) towards qualifying courses

• ELCs can be used for up to 80% of a course; you have to cover the remaining 20% yourself (you can use your Resettlement Grant for this)

• You can claim 3 times (as long as they are in separate financial years)

• You can use ELCs for up to 10 years from your last day of service, but for all those leaving on or after 1 Apr 2016, this is reduced to 5 years

• ELCs can be used towards the costs of tuition fees including VAT

• ELCs cannot be used towards travel, subsistence, accommodation, meals, equipment or course materials where additional fees apply

• You can use one claim for multiple courses, as long as they are linked by a single career goal or industry, and are with the same provider.

Qualifying CoursesFor you to be able to yours your ELCs on a course, it must:

• Be from an ELCAS accredited provider (Visit the ELCAS website for a full list).

• Be accredited by NQF or QCF (National Qualification Framework or Qualifications and Credit Framework).

• Result in a qualification which is Level 3 or higher.

How you found the transition

Once you click your way to freedom nothing seems to happen very quickly. 12 months is a long time but gives you the opportunity to sort your CV, complete your courses and start applying for jobs, although the time goes quickly, there is easily enough time to get it all done. One of the hardest decisions (other than the 7 clicks) was deciding what I wanted to do as a second career. Not being sure, I decided that my engineering background and Project Management would be my focus with perhaps a combination of the two being the strongest bet. The resettlement process seemed to snowball, briefings, CV workshops, courses and applications and then the job offer.

I think the hardest part is when you have completed your courses and training but it’s still too early to start applying. Unless you’re applying to a graduate course or similar, an employer expects you to start within 3 months or so. They are unlikely to hold a position open for much longer than that given the manning gap is probably affecting their business. I had the potential of early release and with accrued leave started to apply with conviction with about 5 months to go. It’s hard to be patient when you just want something sorted.

I had a couple of interviews, didn’t like the first (they probably didn’t like me) and was offered the second which I gladly accepted. The interview was fine, no command tasks, fitness tests or interrogation, just really a discussion about my history and some competency type questions.

Day one was a little odd as it’s been a while since I had been a civvy. God knows what this will feel like after 22 years’ service but I think you soon adjust to it. There are lots of challenges and things to learn along the way, less so because of my military background and more to do with my expectations of those around me.

What skills from the forces have helped in your roleI think a lot of the organisational skills, self-motivation and discipline have been quite apparent. It’s also the ability and confidence to speak with all levels of the workforce from the cleaner to the MD with the same level of respect. This seems obvious but is not necessarily shared by your civvy peers.

How it compares nowThere are definite similarities between the rail industry and Army, partially because the industry is keen to recruit ex-military for the skillset that they bring. The lack of a regimented structure, press-ups and Agai 67 mean that sometimes you ask someone to do something and they don’t. This was a bit of a learning curve which just requires a little closer management than I’m used to in the army. This is another reason why ex-miltary are so well received in civvy street; they are just given a task and get on with it.

What were the obstacles/challengesI promoted after 4 months in role which was fantastic but left a lot of people questioning

James Browning My transition from Captain in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers to Senior Operations Manager with Balfour Beatty Rail

Page 31: New Challenge | New Beginnings: Grantham

www.bfrss.org.uk Grantham July 2016 Careers Fair | 31

my railway experience and whether I was right for the role. It definitely was a steep learning curve but ultimately a machine is a machine and people are people so it wasn’t difficult to get my head round. The lack of commercial exposure in the military is also something that it well recognised but the Commercial Financial awareness course that I did due resettlement was useful.

Focus on networking rather than simply applying through job boards. This was the best bit of advice that I didn’t listen to until late on. Make the most of what the military offer in terms of events, attend the job fairs and DEFINITELY try and make the business presentations and they will want to take your CV.

Keep improving your CV and revisit it once a month. I was sick of trying to improve it but it’s all the recruiter has (apart from number 2). Also take on board any feedback that you are given during the workshops,

Always apply with a cover letter and make it specific to the role. Sometimes it’s tempting just to attach your CV to an application because it’s quicker. However a good cover letter will add to your CV and put you ahead of many other applicants.

From the rolling Wolds in the North, its 30-mile stretch of golden sands on the east coast and the flat agricultural Fenlands of the South, Lincolnshire’s natural beauty is second to none.

Everything else pales in comparison to a glorious sunset across its wide open skies.

Kent may be the garden of England, but Lincolnshire is its breadbasket. Thanks to its rich silt soil a large proportion of the country’s vegetable and cereal crops are grown here including potatoes, cauliflowers, carrots, Brussels sprouts, pumpkins, onions, wheat and barley.

It’s also famed for delicacies including haslet, cheeses, stuffed chine and plum loaf.

We say ‘hello’ to complete strangers in the street and are always happy to stop and give directions – even if we have no idea where we’re sending them.

Lincolnshire is home to an abundance of wildlife. Barn owls can often be spotted flying above agricultural areas in the late afternoon, while brown hares, great crested newts and deer are also common sights across the county.

Every winter grey seals give birth to their pups near the sand dunes at Donna Nook National Nature Reserve – a wildlife spectacle attracting visitors from across the UK.

Living and working in L INCOLNSHIRE

Page 37: New Challenge | New Beginnings: Grantham

Many of its biggest businesses are connected to its horticulture, agriculture, packing and transport industries – including Interflora, Grimme UK and Lincolnshire Field Products. But Lincolnshire is also where the Butlin’s story began back in 1936, when its first holiday camp was opened at Skegness.

Size isn’t everything though – there are plenty of wonderful, smaller independent retailers, food producers and craft industries too.

Despite its rural character there is something for everyone; from the bright lights and thriving nightlife of its university city, to the family friendly amusements of its coastal resorts and country walks and pursuits for those who prefer something a little quieter.

It’s also home to the RAF’s stunt display team the Red Arrows and some pretty impressive historic properties – including Lincoln Castle, Belton House, Burghley House and Tattershall Castle.

The county event’s calendar is bursting with celebrations of sport, arts, culture, food and more – there’s the Burghley Horse Trials,

Lincoln Sausage Festival, Spalding’s Tulipmania and annual Pumpkin Festival and the SO Festival with entertainment lasting several days to name a few.

Lincolnshire is a plane-spotter’s delight. Known as Bomber Command during World War II, it is home to the infamous 617 Squadron who flew the legendary Dambusters’ raid and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, formed to commemorate the RAF’s major battle of honour.

All this unique history is celebrated at several museums including Lincolnshire’s Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirby.

Lincolnshire’s quiet rural charm is a draw for those looking to enjoy a quieter pace of life in their twilight years. The county is one of the few without a motorway, while some of its more outlying areas are frequently prone to slow broadband speeds and intermittent mobile phone signals – which can sometimes be a blessing when you just want to kick back and relax, free from the distractions of the modern world.

Nuco TrainingInstructor Profile

I have always been fanatical about learning real life skills in a way that you will remember ...

My 12 year relationship with Nuco Training began on my way to

the first week of University, where I made a detour en-route, missing

the beginning of fresher’s week, to attend one of Nuco Training’s

First Aid Instructor Courses. The course simplified and honed in on

what we are looking for from all first aid skills. I appreciated the

hands on practical approach to teaching and learning and the quality

of resources and support material. This qualification has enabled

me to continually gain

clients that renew

their training with me

throughout University

and until present day.

Nuco supported

me through my first

courses as an instructor

and gave me the

exposure to deliver

training to multinational

organisations; they boosted my confidence in the classroom by

sharing new teaching ideas. They ensure I always know the latest

industry news, with an experienced instructor training team on hand

to guide and support me.

Since moving to the South West I have gained considerable

experience in varied pre-hospital settings. I am into my 9th year as a

lifeboat crewman. I have also been fortunate enough to be invited to

many national events providing water safety or medical support

to participants.

I have spent five full summer seasons on North Cornwall

beaches Lifeguarding, seeing minor and major first aid incidents on

a daily basis, I took the decision to further my training in Cape Town,

South Africa, qualifying as an Institute of Health Care Development

Ambulance Technician.

This training made me reflect on my own and

others practices. One of the lasting memories is

not about the instructor’s experience and stories,

but the student’s ability to care for and manage

their patients. Since returning from South Africa

I have thought about providing best patient care

and resilience in pre-hospital settings. As such

I have started up Rescue Respect, identifying

needs and developing products for the pre-

hospital settings.

12 years on Nuco Training continues to

support me with their professional and forward thinking approach

to First Aid training, with continually updated resources, CPD and

continuous development.

I strongly recommend Nuco to anyone looking to be their own boss.

It is the sort of business you can grow while being employed. Equally

the instructor course does give you a lot to shout about on your CV,

which I have always been proud of.

Attendee of the event at Oxford I caught up with Corporal Chris Barnes who is currently serving with the RAF and is leaving in July this year, to ask what he thought about today’s event.

Is this your first BFRS event? It is indeed and I am really glad I came here, it was worth being stuck in traffic for..

What do you think of the event? It is very good, it has opened my eyes to a lot of opportunities beyond the Forces.

You are leaving in July, do you have an idea of what you want to do?I would like to stay in logistics, but obviously seeing the Civvy qualifications that you can get outside of the RAF available here today I am pretty much open to everything now.

Have you found today beneficial, would you recommend our events to anyone leaving the Forces?Yes, very much so. I actually was recommended by someone else to come, he went to the one in Catterick and obviously I am going to do the recommending now, because this is a transition event that really is worth coming to.

I am glad I travelled from Brize Norton today.
