New starters set the standard at FBEC

Year 7 students at Fer-ryhill Business and En-terprise College started at the School on Tuesday 9th September, proudly

wearing the school’s new uniform. The polo shirt and thick jumper has been replaced with a smart black blazer

and new school tie. Year 7 students who were interviewed said, “the blazer makes us feel more grown up”.Business Manager at the school, Mrs Edgar said, “The idea for a new uniform was initially proposed by older pupils at the school a few years ago. We are pleased that we have completed the changeover ready for the new academic year when the school celebrates its 50th year.”Whilst year 11 students are not required to wear the new uniform as they have only a few months remaining at school, many have opted to buy it. Mr Brennan, Headteacher said, “I am very pleased with the new uniform. Students looked very pro-fessional as they arrived at school this morning. It is credit to governors and the school’s student council for turning this idea into a reality in such a short space of time.”

School celebrates 50 years of education with record results

Ferryhill Business and En-terprise College again cel-ebrated record GCSE results this year. At a time when schools across England have seen pass rates in English fall, Ferryhill has seen a rapid increase, and now 76% of students achieve the gold standard A*-C grades, which places the school well above the national average. Maths has seen similar record breaking rises, with 72% of students achieving a C+ grade in the subject.Headteacher, Kevin Brennan said, “The results

are excellent and will hope-fully show Ferryhill to be one of the most improved schools in England”. He added, “The school is going from strength to strength. Great results are a reflection that all aspects of the school are on the up.”Stephanie Johnson, Head of More Able students at the college paid tribute to some outstanding achievements, with Rachael Farley, Melissa Harker, Amy Hopper, Reece Roberts, Tenielle Walmsley, Caitlin Williams and Jordyn Williams achieving over 62

A and A* grades between them.Mr Freeman, Head of Achievement at the college said, “That the results rep-resent another step change. In additional to real success with students achieving C grades, students at the school also achieved over 415 GCSEs at the very highest grades A*, A or B”.“As a specialist Business college the school is also particularly pleased with Business Studies results, with around half of the 43 students achieving A or A* grades”

Ferryhill 2000 Commit-tee has organised a free hands-on exhibition in-volving Ferryhill History Society, Ferryhill E-Cafe and Time Bandits, a his-torical re-enactment and interpretation group.Ferryhill History Society's display will be specific to Ferryhill residents’ lives during WW1, both at home and in combat. County Durham has been chosen to pilot a new campaign that aims to find families for children in the area that are waiting to be adopted.There are 220 children in the North East that are waiting for a loving home. The new campaign will encourage people in the North East to consider adoption by bringing to life what it means to have children through stories of family life that reflect real adopters’ experiences.The campaign – which is backed by the national adoption information service, First4Adoption – will run until the end of this week, with adverts featur-ing in local newspapers,

online and on local radio.Gemma Gordon-Johnson, Head of Service at First4A-doption, said: “We want this campaign to mark a new era in the recruit-ment of adopters. In recent years, there have been important improve-ments in the adoption system that has made it easier to place children with families as quickly as possible. But there is still more to be done. We need more people in the North East and beyond to come forward and start their adoption story if the needs of all children, for who adoption is the best option, are going to be met.”The pilot is taking place in the North East and the

East of England. Following it, the adverts and other resources will be devel-oped and made available to all adoption agencies in England. New look for FBEC

Ferryhill Business and En-terprise College starts the school year with a new look due to improvements on the front of the main building.Headteacher, Kevin Brennan said, “The front of the school needed substantial

repairs and the first phase of the upgrades are a step in the right direction”.The school is keen not to rest on its laurels and is still fighting to bring in ad-ditional funding to further improve the site. He added, “At the end of

the last academic year the school were recommended by the Local Author-ity for further substantial upgrades as part of a bid to central government. If suc-cessful, the proposal could bring over a million pounds of additional investment”.
