Teen Advisory Group (TAG)

Yellowknife Public Library invites teens to

join our Teen Advisory Group (TAG). If you are in grades 8 - 12, may or may not like reading, then we want you! Meet new

people, gain Community Service Hours, help with library programs, and get volunteer

experience for your resume. The first meeting is

September 30, from 3:45—5:00 p.m. For more information

email [email protected]

It’s no secret that li-braries are changing. There is less emphasis on shushing and more emphasis on creativity and shared learning. But of course, it’s nice to have some peace and quiet, to relax with a favourite book. What’s more, many studies are now show-

ing a correlation between screen time and decreased atten-tion spans, disrupted sleep, and obesity. On your lunch breaks (12:00—2:00 pm), starting October 6 and running every Tuesday for the rest of the month, why not get away from it all? Join us in the library meeting room for the Silent Reading Café. Bring a book, a magazine, or a newspaper, but leave your cellphones and other electronics off and out of sight— better yet, leave them behind!

Head back to work refreshed.

Can’t Decide What to Read Next? Did you know that your library card gives you access to NoveList Plus, “a premiere database of reading recom-mendations?” If you have a favourite book, it can suggest a “read alike” or you can find books on a similar subject, by similar authors, and more. Check it out under “online re-sources” on our website: yellowknife.ca/ypl. Of course our friendly library staff are always here to help as well!

The library is looking for four avid readers who are passion-ate about reading and

debating to participate in a battle to determine the book that makes us the proudest to be Canadian. Yellowknife Reads will take place in 2016 (date t.b.d.) in the library meeting room. Please email [email protected] if you are interested to defend a book (include your proposed book title) or would like to nominate someone from the community.

Ptarmicon Library Display Winner Congratulations to Annie Strus who won a weekend family pass courtesy of the good folks behind Ptarmicon after entering her name in a library display ballot box.

Another Successful Summer Reading Club Wraps Up Attracting record numbers of kids aged 3-12, Library assistant Emma Welsh, who ran the 2015 Summer Reading Club, attributed the resounding success to “the outstanding encouragement [she] saw from teachers and families.” This year’s theme was “Build It” and what better way to round it off than with a Lego party! Held in the final week of August, children, caregivers, and parents all showed up to hear stories, play games, make crafts, and celebrate an awe-some summer of reading. Sudhir Jha, father of Isha (8), said overall it was a “really good program, really interactive,” going on to say that his daughter came home every week very excited to go back to the library, espe-cially to check out all of the books. Isha agreed but also added that she loved all of the crafts.
