Chaplaincy Care • Support • Healing • Spirituality
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEOAPC has been hard at work this year faithfully building APC, promoting professional chaplaincy, and advocating for spiritual care as a necessary feature of holistic care afforded patients, clients, employees, service members and others. This report describes just a few of the accomplishments and highlights from our last fiscal year (November 1, 2017 - October 31, 2018). Here are just a few snapshots.
Faithfully Building APC
• APC continues to grow in membership. Year-over-year net growth for the past decade has held steady between 1-3%. Our membership consists of professional chaplains from diverse backgrounds, working in diverse fields and settings with competence, compassion and empathy.
• APC is recognized as the gold standard for practitioners seeking certification as a Professional Chaplain. BCCI continues to matriculate more and more certified chaplains – 392 new BCCs and specialists received their due recognition at the 2018 Annual Banquet.
• The Board of Directors leads and liaisons with more than 30 committees, commissions, and task forces leading APC valuable work. APC’s growth and successes could not have been accomplished if it were not for our members and more than 110 dedicated and capable volunteer leaders
• Financially, APC and BCCI finished the fiscal year with a clean audit and with reserves at 80%, which is in the target zone established by the Board of Directors.
Promoting Professional Chaplaincy
• In 2018 APC and our historically strategic partners (ACPE, CASC, NACC, NAJC) entered into conversation about how together we can best serve the profession. The outcome of multiple face-to-face meetings and conference calls is described in these two documents: Strategic Partners – Building Together (April 25, 2019) and Strategic Partners for Spiritual Care Issue a Memorandum of Understanding (June 20, 2018). The guiding assumption for the process is that through structured collaboration we are poised to capitalize on strategic opportunities in order to ensure all those served by the Associations have the best possible spiritual care and to safeguard the future of the spiritual care profession.
• APC and NACC together initiated a study with the Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT) a National Science Foundation (NSF) independent federal agency created in 1950 Congress to foster innovation and partnerships. The main goals are to understand the strengths of current chaplaincy certification processes, both general and specialty certification, as well as information about concerns and questions about the processes.
Advocating for Holistic Care
• Digital publication of the Impact of Professional Spiritual Care was released. To create this publication, the six largest healthcare chaplaincy organizations in North America collaborated to share the facts about spiritual care and practitioners’ roles, training, and standards.
• An independent and quantitative salary survey was undertaken with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the Association of Professional Chaplains and the Catholic Health Association of the United States to benchmark salaries based on education, area of practice, regional location and work responsibilities. The report is available free to APC members under the resources tab.
APC has relevancy because you do relevant work. APC has standing as a professional organization because you are a professional. APC is recognized as the gold standard because of the gold standard service you provide. It’s been a great year and we’re well positioned for an even better year to come. We’re grateful to serve as co-authors with you writing APC’s next great chapter.
Blessings,
Ronald C. Oliver PhD MBA BCC President
