SPORT RELIEF

2010 Well done to everybody who took part in the Sport Relief Mile. Even though the weather was poor we had a fantastic turn out!

Dear Parents and Carers It is with sadness that I write my final contribution as Headteacher of Neville Lovett Community School. Being here for the last three years has been one of the most challenging yet exhilarating experiences in my life so far. I cannot believe how much we have achieved in such a short time. Not only has the school environment changed physically (doesn’t it look fabulous – it is my favourite time of year now everything is beginning to blossom and bloom – I’ll be back for Amps in the Arena) but the ethos of the school has changed significantly. The vast majority of our students are fully engaged with their learning. They know what progress they are expected to make and how they are going to get there. Where progress is not being made at an expected level, they know that intervention will take place to help them learn more effectively and get back on track. Consequently, more children are achieving highly and more are accessing further and higher education. The students have been given a greater voice and greater responsibility in the school and the majority of them are fine citizens and thoroughly likeable young people. They are lovely to talk to and they are keen to share their ideas in a very pleasant and open way. I am so proud of them. Parents have been enormously supportive during my time here: you want the best for your children and you are prepared to work in partnership with the school to make sure they get it. School numbers for September 2010 are higher than they have been – we will have to start a waiting list soon. Thank you to all of you who have made my job so enjoyable. During the summer term, Mr Andrew Campbell will be Acting Headteacher and he will continue to guide the school to further success supported by a dedicated team of teachers and associate staff. We are expecting further good results in the summer. In April, the interviews will take place to find the new Headteacher and Mr Campbell will let you know as soon as possible who that person will be from September. As I ride off into the sunset (well, drive to Havant!) I know that part of my heart will always remain at Neville Lovett. I wish you all – students and families – all the very best for the future. Dear Parents and Carers As we approach the Easter holidays I am looking forward to leading the school through the summer term. I would like to congratulate Mrs Taylor on her appointment to lead Hampshire’s first academy. There have been lots of rumours in school that the uniform is going to change and all sorts of other things will be different. Can I take this opportunity to say please ignore the rumours! There have been many changes in the last three years and as a staff we are looking to make sure these work as well as they can in order to get the best for every student who comes to Neville Lovett. As has been the case for this time everything we do will be judged against whether it is in the best interests of our students. I am sure next term will present interesting and exciting challenges. As always, I am sure we can rely on every member of staff to go the extra mile in this important examination period. If you have children taking exams after the Easter break, please encourage them to revise. The exam dates are on the VLE. MATHS AND COMPUTING NEWSMATHS AND COMPUTING NEWS ICT at Neville Lovett Community School moves on... Two exciting developments have occurred at Neville Lovett! The first is the introduction of Adobe Design CS4 Studio Premium. CS4 will give our students the opportunity to use industry standard software in their project work, particularly the latest versions of Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and Illustrator. This will be particularly useful to our CIDA, Media and Art students. The second development which is open to students, staff and members of the local community is the chance to study for Microsoft certified courses in Basic ICT (Digital Literacy), Word, Excel etc. By the end of the course all students will receive a certificate from Microsoft.

“We now have lots of new Frog Champions, with many from years 7 and 8, who have been trained to create web pages. They are currently preparing departmental portals with assistance from myself Karen Aston, school Web Architect. A number of them have attended Childline training and Audio Visual Technician training, the latter being taught in-house by the IT Support Team. Parental portal access and letters continue to be prepared and distributed. Years 8 and 9 have been sent out recently. Our support of our feeder schools continues with the building of VLEs and websites within Frog for them. This will assist in an easy transition for the children from these schools to come to Neville Lovett.”

Congratulations to the students who took part in this year’s Intermediate Mathematical Challenge in February. We achieved 9 certificates this year which is a great result considering there were over 3000 schools participating. Well done Mark Loomes (Yr 10), Liam Davies (Yr 10), Zack Forman (Yr 10) and Ryan Goodland (Yr 10) who all received a Silver certificate. Also well done to Kieran Letts (Yr 10), James Whitefield (Yr 10), Charles Halford (Yr 9) and Connor Gardener (Yr 9) who received the Bronze certificate.

Parents and children please remain vigilant when using social network sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. Do not accept messages/requests from users of these sites that you do not know personally. Do not pass on information that you would rather keep private. Remember that information (text and images) can easily be copied and passed on to people outside your Friends list. Make sure you know what your Privacy Settings are set to and adjust them if you need to. If you receive any communication that you are unhappy with then make sure you tell a responsible adult (including the police). In March ’10, as part of Neville Lovett’s Gifted and Talented programme, selected year five students from three feeder schools, Wallisdean Junior, Redlands Primary and Ranvilles Junior were invited to the school for an ICT taster session. They had an oppor-tunity to try out, first hand, the use of the latest Adobe Creative Suite Neville Lovett had installed in December. The students first had to arrange an Easter setting with an assortment of props, and then take some colour photo-graphs. Following that, they then used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to produce their own personalised Easter cards for their families. Everyone left with their own memento of the session and hopefully with an idea of what is available when they arrive here in year seven. As part of the Maths and ICT specialism, Neville Lovett has invested in a brand new weather station that now sits proudly on the roof of one of the school blocks. This piece of equip-ment will collect data automatically, such as wind speed and direction, rainfall, temperature, UV readings and humidity. This data will be collected, stored and be available to use in a variety of subjects such as ICT, Maths, Science and Geography. The information will also be available on the school website so everyone can see what the conditions are like around the school site. Other schools in the area, such as Cams Hill, have also expressed an interest in using the data collected.

Dear Intrepid, I would like to start by congratulating two of our Intrepid students, Lauren Edwins and Natalie Cleave, for winning this years Neville Lovett’s Got Talent. They performed a fantastic piece of contemporary dance; well done to both of you! I really enjoyed our Easter celebration assembly the other day. It was fantastic to be able to recognise all the responsible, hard working and punctual students in our house; your efforts are really appreciated, thank you. Well done to all of those students that achieved or surpassed their target grades in the recent mock examinations in particular Natalie Cleave who achieved six A*s and six As, well done Natalie. For those of you who fell short of your targets, learn from the experience and make sure that you are better prepared for the real exams. Right now nothing could be more important to you than your GCSE grades, so use your remaining time to revise effectively, and use past papers to practise your exam technique. It is important that you do everything you can to make sure who you fulfil your potential. I know that we are still last on the stamps competition, but with one term left to go and only 1% between us and Discovery I know that we can, with a little more effort from some students, get into third place. So this is a call to all those students who, for whatever

reason, have not been getting all of their stamps, to step up and support your house in a competition that should mean something to every single student in Intrepid house.

Two families in Discovery House will be especially proud. Our congratulations go to both the Rolls and the Menezes family as their children both received outstanding grades in every subject. Ms Hawkins has been doing some digging and discovering just how much talent we have in our House. For example did you know……….? Tom Spears in year 11 has been selected to represent Hampshire in the Under 16 Football team. Well Done Tom And a very well done to all students in Discovery who participated in the Inter House event which I am very proud to announce was won by….. Discovery! Hurrah!

The spring term started off well in the Endeavour camp with all the students returning well and very refreshed from their Christmas holidays. Within 2 days another break ensued with 3 “snow days”. A number of excellent sledging stories were gathered, and that was from staff alone!! Eventually the term did start and the students settled quickly back in the winter wonderland and most importantly of all….the work ethic! By now the Year 7 students have settled well into life at Neville Lovett. I was fortunate to have an assembly with them where I got them to fill out a card about themselves and a few facts. This could be very interesting to hold against them when they enter Year 11!. Talking about Year 11, they returned focussed on the final tasks that lay ahead in their most important year of their secondary education. The tutor representatives have taken on a very vital role once again this term and have a huge role in acting as the student voice for Endeavour house. We meet on a regular basis and discuss and reflect on the many issues that come forward in the daily house period e.g. Can we interview the next set of Headteacher candidates! Once again the issue of student toilets have been brought up and subsequently passed onto the student parliament for consultation. Students also keep mentioning the way in which they can be identified according to their different houses e.g. different coloured polo shirts; wrist bands or even ties! On Friday 19th March an amazing event took place at the school. Each and every student participated in the Sport Relief – run a mile campaign. The students donated £1 each in order to run the mile! This consisted of running / walking 2 laps of the school playing fields with at least 1 item of sports clothing or

equipment. It was a great day in which every member of the school – both staff and students managed to complete the mile. Well done to everyone, especially from the Endeavour house. A number of Endeavour students have been performing well both in and out of school in terms of sporting conquests. Danny Knee and Harrison Bilbe have been putting in great performances for the Year 7 school football team; Danny scoring 5 goals in one game. Bobby Ginn continues to hit the target more times than not with the GB pistol squad. I am still creeping around him for tickets to the 2012 or 2016 Olympics! Janet Cuschieri is now playing off a 9 handicap in golf and still represents the county at her respective age group. Janet, I would love some tickets to the Open one day in the future! Harry Hinton is a representative of the Gosport U14 ice hockey team with a view to playing in the U16 team. Well done to you guys and all the best for the future. Over the term we have had a number of parents’ evenings and I would like to personally thank both the staff and parents for their continuing support at these events. I sincerely hope that all the Endeavour students have a relaxing and restful Easter – keep off the chocolate! The Year 11s should have revision timetables in place and studying a little but often throughout this period before the summer exams. Motto – “ NO PAIN……NO GAIN” Neil Edwards This term we have been continuing to work with student parliament and feedback from tutor reps to continue last terms work. We have all been very busy with mocks so its been quiet,’ but we are looking forward to seeing what will happen next, especially as Mrs Taylor will soon be leaving and replaced by a new Headteacher. Challenge House mock results Congratulations to all those who did well in the mock exams. Many students have achieved target grades in a range of subjects. For those who were disappointed, there is still time to make significant improvements and it is worth reminding some students that it is never too late! The mock exams have enabled them to try out their technique in preparation for the real thing which is coming up soon and we hope that the Easter break will provide the ideal opportunity for getting down to some serious revision. I would like to say a special “well done” to the following students: Marie-Anne Taylor who achieved A in Art, 7 grade Bs and 2 Cs. Ella-Jayne Tarbuck who achieved A grades in History and ICT along with 3 Bs and 4 Cs.

A special mention is also due to Mollie Beale, Keira Puk and Katie Smith who all achieved a C in Maths. COMMUNITY NEWSCOMMUNITY NEWS

Plans are being developed for the outdoor space at Merryfields. Plans have been produced to reflect the ideas from centre users. We are now looking at funding streams so that work can start work in the Autumn. The canopies will be installed soon to provide more shade during the summer months. Families enjoyed a live theatre event during half term called ‘Billy Beware’ focussing on Child Safety. The show was held in the school hall and evaluations showed the performance was very much enjoyed by all who came. The Spring programme is busy with Childminders’ drop in group, Chat and Play, Triple P Parenting programme, Stay and Play, Baby Clinic, Midwife Clinic, Bumps and Babies, Post natal Group, Tiny Tots, Baby Massage, Terrific Toddlers, Family Learning, Family Forum meetings and Dad’s Group. Family Support Workers continue to support families with children 0-5 years old in the area. If you know a family who would appreciate some support with their young children please ask them to call in or ring the centre and ask to speak to Ally, Michelle or Lucy. Over Easter we are having an open day on Thursday 15th April 10-2pm. Kidsrome Farm will be at the centre with lambs, chicks and other animals and Easter activities will be available inside for families to drop in and see what we do. After Easter a new FAB( Families at Broadlaw) group will be starting at the Broadlaw Space for families to drop in and get advice around potty training, weaning etc… from Jane (community nursery nurse) and Lucy (Family Support Worker) It will run on Thursdays 10-11am and families are welcome to drop in. For over 30 years students from Neville Lovett have taken part in a Year 7 camp. This visit has proved to be one of the most memorable milestones in a student’s time at Neville Lovett. This year’s camp is being held at Fairthorne Manor from Monday 12th July-Friday 16th July. Activities that students will be taking part in include kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling, low ropes and the infamous team challenge assault course. I for one am hoping to retain my title of staff champion and beat Mr Southee for another year but hopefully with fewer bruises! Students spend the week under canvas and also follow a programme of team building and nature activities. There are still a few places left on this year’s camp and if you would like your child to attend they can either pick up a letter from me or download a letter from the school website. It would be great to have as many year 7 students as possible to attend camp for this once-in-a-life-time experience.

MFL oral exams

The test consists of 2 role-plays and 2 conversations in French. This exam is worth 25% of the marks for their final GCSE grade. It is essential that they attend this examination. Nick Ilott Catering Manager—I have worked in the catering industry for 33 years, having been trained by the Royal Navy. Whilst in the Navy, I was fortunate enough to become a member of the international cookery team, with some success and also served aboard HMY Brittania. Prior to joining the school catering service I was a head chef in several restaurants and a gentleman’s club. Personal interests include open water diving, cycling, walking. I have two daughters in advanced education and a menagerie of pets. I hope to improve the food service at Neville Lovett Community School, through improved availability and selection, and a keen interest in customer demand but in keeping with current legislation and a focus on healthy eating.

Science Club is going GREEN! With the start of Spring on 20th March, Science Club has once again moved out-doors to work on our allotment. Last year we cleared much of the site and cultivated two beds. We successfully grew a small range of vegetables including potatoes and tomatoes. We also erected a greenhouse and compost bins. This year we have grand plans! We have started work on a third bed so that we can start to rotate crops. We have also started to clear a further two beds for some soft fruit and are planning to grow strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries and goji berries (the new super berries that are supposedly good for our health.). We will also be erecting a shed to keep our growing range of tools in. And finally we hope to sort out the pond area and erect bird feeders to attract wildlife. With such a busy schedule planned we are looking for more volunteers to come and help us. We meet on Wednesday lunchtime and on Thursday’s after school between 3 and 4 pm. If you’d like to get involved come along to B6 at the above times.

Young Carers The Young Carers group has gone from strength to strength this term. Our numbers have increased as staff and students have become more aware of Young Carers and their needs. This term has been busy with a vast array of activities including card making, biscuit icing, games and Easter crafts. The students still enjoy coming for a chat, support with their homework and for refreshments. Next term we will endeavour to support our Young Carers and welcome new members. The group meet on a Monday and Wednesday lunch time in A3.

HEALTH and WELLBEING DROP IN - WEST END CENTRE Thursdays 3-4pm

In response to requests from students and parents, Thursday the 18th March saw the opening of the Neville Lovett Health and Well Being Drop In. This is staffed by the Youth Service and is fully supported by the school. The ‘Drop In’ is a confidential service for advice and guidance on a number of topics including: Relationships, sexual health and contraception, weight management, acne, smoking, mental health, peer pressure and bullying. Students will be sign-posted to other agencies as necessary.

Students visit Southampton Solent University (Aim Higher) When we arrived at Solent University, we got introduced to 2 student ambassadors. We were taken to creative writing where we learned how to get our ‘million dollar’ ideas and how to stop idea block. We did fun activities and broke into 2 teams to think of 50 new uses for everyday items. Rolling pins turned into buildings and cars to drive into the sea. Metal balls in a case turned into a mouse house and electronic egg warmers. Next was …… lunch. We were given food vouchers and got to choose from a range of yummy foods like all day breakfast, pizza or pasta. Then after that we got to go to an ICT suite. We had to create a word document or Power Point on a holiday. We could choose to create a luxury or budget holiday. Our holidays ranged from camping to Dubai to the Moon. Before we left we were given a tour around University. We saw computer rooms and hair and makeup studios, and several other places. The university also has editing of animation, live news channel, old and new fashioned photography, sport centres, and much more. Then after a quick stop to fill in a questionnaire in the cafe, we got back on the coach to school.

Neville Lovett’s Got Talent – The Final Eight fantastic acts took to the stage for the 2010 final. In front of a packed house the finalists all performed extremely well and gave it their best performances to date in my opinion. 2 bands, 2 singers and 4 dancers impressed the judges so much that they even asked me if we could pull the winners from the massive cup on show! Eventually they came to a unanimous decision, giving the cup to a superb contemporary dance by Lauren Edwins and Natalie Cleave. Well done to all those that took part from the start and special thanks to Mark Butler and Tom Sellen for setting up and Joshua Selby and Michael Desouza for sorting out the lighting.

SCHOOL NEWSSCHOOL NEWS CHIPS AND NEVILLE LOVETT SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP IS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS Neville Lovett Community School has been in partnership with ChildLine for the last year. A vision was born to give students a greater voice within the school and to educate students on topics such as cyber-bullying and cyber-safety. Head Teacher Julie Taylor joined the school in September 2008 and saw that students did not have anything that belonged to them, “I needed to introduce something that would raise the confidence and self-esteem of our students. It allowed me to give positions of responsibility to the students who would otherwise be punished by the education system. I believe that it gives students more responsibility and respect within our school community. Voices of our students have to be heard and taken seriously”. In the past year many roles have been created and to date approximately a quarter of Neville Lovett Community School are involved. All Student Ambassadors have been trained by Jan Aspinall the CHIPS Training and Outreach Worker for the South West. Students have been trained in cyber-bullying, cyber-safety and how to keep themselves safe. Henry Rustell, 14, said “I am proud and honoured to have a nationally recognised certificate. We didn’t have any-where to go before this started, now students talk to us about their problems and we are trained to deal with it”. CHIPS provides a range of services from awareness raising assemblies, workshops dealing with bullying issues, to setting up peer support schemes that encourage students to support one another. Chloe Wyllie, 14, said “it has made me become more confident and it makes me proud to think that Mrs. Taylor trusts us. It has changed the student-staff relationship in the school as staff now treat us more like adults”. Neville Lovett Community School supports the CHIPS peer support programme which also addresses the every child matters outcomes. Karla Testa, 14, said “ChildLine training makes us see people for what they really are, we understand sometimes that their behaviour is because there are reasons behind it”. Aidan Robinson, 14, added “it is a great feeling knowing that students can talk to us. Although a problem maybe big to them we can help them because we have been trained, even with quite serious issues such as bullying. We are like a family, with Mrs. Molyneaux as mother hen”. Janet Molyneaux, Assistant Head of House, set up the programme in partnership with Jan Aspinall from ChildLine. Janet Molyneaux believes that Neville Lovett Community School belongs to the students “they have a right to be heard and their opinions are pivotal in becoming an outstanding school. Their enthusiasm and commitment is phenomenal, I have seen their confidence blossom and their school work improve”. Neville Lovett Community School has a rolling programme whereby they are continually recruiting new ambassadors who will then go on to achieve other roles within the school, for example peer educators, peer supporters, Frogs and Frogs Champions.

Year 10 Football Report— Neville Lovett 5 – 3 Henry Cort It was a fine spring evening on Tuesday 16th March, a fine spring evening for a football match of epic proportions. Having played three games before Christmas and losing two (heavily), it was time for the year 10 boys to take to the field again in the Year 10 Knockout Cup. With regular Friday night training sessions under their belts, the team were in a positive mood. Disaster struck before kick off when Henry Rustell, getting a lift to the game with his dad, failed to turn up on time. In came Matt Lee at centre back and his performance was not only confident, but inspiring. From the kick off Neville started strongest with a strong starting line up. The midfield was getting stuck in like Dawn French to a bag of doughnuts, the defence were assured and Tom and Mason up top were working as well together as Ant and Dec. Neville took an early lead with a confident finish from Tom, and they were two up when Mason slotted home. It was then that the team pressed the self destruct button. They conceded a soft goal and Mark Loomes felt the need to play a one, two with our own crossbar, while Ryan Goodland in goal was busy keeping out shots from our defence! It was then that Tom provided a memorable moment. He had been tormenting the opposition defence with his Delap like throw-ins and when one was cleared back to him he curled a peach into the top left corner. The second half began and Kieron was replaced in the centre of the park after clobbering one in the face. Things took a while to settle down and Henry Corts ball over the top was causing problems, and it led to their second goal, 3-2. James Whitefield then took it upon him to attack every ball played over the top from then on and they never threatened again. A second change was made and Zac came on in the centre and provided a moment of genius with Liam Davies on the edge of the box, which was unfortunately cleared. But when the ball was cleared back to Mason up top, he ambled round three players and unleashed a rocket to make it 4-2. Tom later went on to complete his hat-trick with another tidy finish and this prompted great celebrations. Several final subs were made to shore up the defence and Neville held on for a memorable victory. Well done to the team and bring on round two!

SCHOOL NEWSSCHOOL NEWS Health & Social Care and Children’s Care, Learning and Development: Mrs Gange and Mrs Foster were delighted with the Year 11 exam results. The students sat a modular exam in January; they were forecasted to achieve 35% A*-C but achieved 59%, way above their target. Congratulations! Year 10 BTEC CCLD students are continuing our links with Fareham Opportunity Group on site. We are grateful to the staff for allowing our students to interact with the young children providing us with excellent vocational learning opportunities. The same students, along with the Year 10 Health & Social Care students have all had the opportunity to take home “real care” babies to experience the demands of looking after a young baby. The students have cared for the “babies” well, they get a score for the quality of the care provided, but they found it an exhausting experience having to come to the school the next day!!

PC Dee Dixon is helping to break down the barrier between police and young people. PC Dee is a Safety School Partnership Officer for Neville Lovett Community School and her policing presence is connecting young people and the police in a school environment. She works in partnership with the school, education services and other agencies to prevent offending and to create a safer school environment. Her policing presence at the school is helping to prevent crime by re-educating, breaking down barriers of how young people perceive the police, supporting the community and providing stability. She arranges and delivers intervention work keeping young people on the right road and has assisted the school in developing new approaches to behaviour management and conflict resolution within the school. Julie Taylor, Head Teacher of Neville Lovett Community School said: “PC Dee has made a significant difference to the way in which we work with young people and their parents. As a result of her hard work, the number of serious behaviour incidents has reduced, as have our fixed term exclusions. PC Dee has been prepared to put in place some very proactive systems which enable the young person to put right whatever they have got wrong, learn from the experience and maintain their dignity. Other children and parents report that they feel safer in school and in the locality because of her presence in school. Our school has benefitted enormously from her advice, guidance and support.” PC Dee Dixon is delighted to be working in partnership with the school, she said: “I love how the students accept me and feel confident to approach me whether they have an issue or just for general chat to tell me about their weekend. The staff and agencies have been fantastic and I have had terrific support. I have always worked with young people within the police and I absolutely love it, I find it really satisfying and rewarding.” Laura Chase

RE Department – Fareham Community Church: Year 8 students have been involved in designing a church to cater for five Christian denominations. As part of that work Michiel Bruggemann from Fareham Community Church has visited each class to talk about Christian worship. Michiel welcomed the students asking questions about being a Christian in the 21st century.

SPORTS REPORT Neville Lovett have had some good successes over the last two terms. Congratulations go to the Year 11 Basketball team now remain undefeated for 4 years (Tom Spears, Troy Turner, Tyrone Turner, Tom Batten, Alix Payne, Tom Batten, Sam Hamber and Ally Kemp). We have four students who have county honours – Tom Spears and Ben Brown (Football) and Janet Cushieri and Paige Harrison (Golf). We have had many fixtures postponed and cancelled due to the bad weather, however the year 9 Netball team came 3rd in the recent Fareham and Gosport Schools competition. Good luck to the Rock Challenge Dancers who compete at the Portsmouth Guildhall in April, they have worked really hard and a big thank you to our choreographer Chris Todd for all his hard work with them. Athletics, Tennis and Rounders Clubs will start after easter and we look forward to continuing with our successful Athletics teams.

TRAFFIC CALMING WORKS We have been informed by the county council that as part of their ‘Proposed Safe Routes to School’ they will be introducing Traffic Calming Measures in St Anne’s Grove during the Easter holidays. The works will involve narrowing the road in two places to produce two pinch points. Although we have never had a serious problem with speeding traffic in St Anne’s Grove we welcome any moves to make the journey to school safer for staff and students.
