Dear Parents and Carers As we approach the summer holidays I hope we can look forward to some wonderful beach weather. The summer term is always a busy one. We said goodbye to Year 11 a few weeks ago and had a wonderful time at their Prom. It doesn’t seem that long ago that they were Year 7s eagerly anticipating 5 years at Neville Lovett. The Festival of Achievement allowed us to showcase some of the wonderful work our students do and to meet parents of the next generation of Neville Lovett students. We will be saying good bye to a number of colleagues at the end of this term. Most noteworthy amongst these is Alan Crowther. He has been part of the Bishopsfield / Neville Lovett community since 1973. That’s heading towards 40 years and many of you who are reading this newsletter will have been taught by him. I am sure you will want to wish him a long and happy retirement. I had the pleasure of appointing Kieran Letts and Molly Lancaster to the posts of Head Boy and Head Girl respectively. Their first outing was at the Festival of Achievement where they addressed parents. I am looking forward to working with them as we move into the next school year. It has been an interesting term for all of the staff here as we anticipate the arrival of Mrs Nadine Powrie who will take up the Headteacher’s position in September. Many of you will have met her at the Festival of Achievement, one of the 6 days she has spent with us. It will be an exciting time for the school. There are a number of children’s summer activities taking place during the summer holiday. Details of these can be found on the website. The new term starts on Wednesday 8th of September. Year 7 parents and carers are invited to an optional breakfast at 08.15. Further details will be sent separately. Year 11 to tutor base at 8.40am. Years 8, 9 and 10 to report to their tutor base at 9.15am. Lessons will begin at 10.05am. I hope you have an enjoyable summer. Best regards Andrew Campbell Acting Headteacher

A LETTER FROM THE HEADA LETTER FROM THE HEAD

SCHOOL COUNCIL The future of student voice at Neville Lovett is clearer now than it has ever been before. With the formation of the new ‘Neville Lovett School Council’ all thirty two tutor reps will now sit on the council allowing for better and more effective communication between the whole student population and the Head Teacher. The School Council will also have a link with the Fareham Youth Council thanks to Patrick Stewart who was recently elected as vice chair of the Fareham Youth Council, well done Patrick. Unfortunately the formation of the School Council has meant that the Student Parliament will no longer exist and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students and staff who tried so hard to make the student parliament work. Hopefully, when fully up and running in September, the School Council will help all of the students at Neville Lovett School to have a voice and a say in what happens at our school; and in preparation for September I would ask all Ne-ville Lovett students to put some thought into whether you would like to be a tutor rep and help to make the school council a successful and effective student organisation. Have a good summer, Mr Waddington

We also received some excellent comments from our students. Below (in their own words) and our replies Would be good if we could purchase Windows software through the school at a discounted price, instead of

purchasing the software independently and being charge the full price. Try Software4Students or Academia or RM for some of the best student discounts There should be a link to IT support at the bottom of the home page so if we have troubles logging in we can send a

message to it and it will be sorted out Excellent idea – we’re on it now, Thanks Should be able to access a few programs from home that the school get licences for :) would be nice Hopefully this will happen soon when we implement the secure gateway My computer has not been working for about 3 months and i don't understand why., My mum and i are confused

when it comes to computers. Speak to IT Support they may be able to advise your mum We should have windows 7 and office 2010 version and should have a school version of like Facebook and Bebo

were we should be able to put whatever we want to talk about and let other people see these comments

As it happens – we’re hoping to move to 2010 and Win 7 in the next 6 months. FROG allows you to create your own social network style pages

All of this is helping us plan for the future. We want our students to benefit from 21st Century technologies, to be able to use the Internet safely, wisely and effectively, to benefit from the most modern and professional software available. So that they can be the best equipped to shape the future. Ian Cranstone

The Parental Engagement Portal has been extended to include parents of Year 8. Year 10 parents details will be going out shortly. A questionnaire has been presented to users of the Portal which will capture parents views about the School. Frog Champions have received further Frog training which included a lesson on how to create forms and questionnaires within Frog. They will soon be assisting teachers and other students in lessons. Frog Champions have been assisting in creating departmental portals on the VLE. We are pleased to announce that feeder school websites and VLEs continue to be developed by Neville Lovett Community School, leading to better integration for children in our community.

On Tuesday 8th June I took a group of year 8 students to the University of Portsmouth for a mathematics masterclass. The masterclass covered geometric reasoning. It began by looking at basic 2D shapes, such as circles, squares and triangles. The next stage was to examine and classify types of triangles, exploring the origin of their names. Equilateral triangle comes from the Latin meaning all equal, angles and legs. Isosceles comes from Greek meaning two equal legs and right angled triangle comes from the word justice. Also examinined was Pythagoras theorem. The children then explored the power of an isosceles in solving problems and understanding certain mathematical proofs. This culminated in the children examining circle theorem proofs. These were completed without numbers using only arrow heads constructed from radii forming them into isosceles triangles and examining what they knew about triangles and angles. The class took the children from primary school level maths, at the start, all the way to A* theorems at the end. It was a very worthwhile and useful masterclass and was enjoyed by all the students who attended.

Mr E Smith – Teacher of Mathematics “I really enjoyed the maths day because I learned how to do things I already knew but didn’t know how to use it”

Samuel John “The maths thing at Portsmouth University was a great experience, I would definitely do it again and it has encouraged me to go to university no matter what my dad says”

Sophie Baldock “I liked the up for maths class because I learned on thing more and that's about tangents and also I would have liked it to be a bit longer. Thanks for the highlighter”

Student IT Survey This term we’ve been surveying students about IT access. Out of a sample of 359 students a stagger-ing 97% had access to the Internet at home. By far the most popular operating system was Microsoft Windows with Vista and Office proving the most popular, sadly the excellent Macs still a long way behind. As expected Office 2007 was the most popular office suite with the recent 2010 version catching it up fast. But it wasn’t all Microsoft the most popular browser surprisingly proved to be Google’s Chrome, with Internet Explorer some way behind.

INTREPIDINTREPID

Head of House—Mr A Waddington

DISCOVERYDISCOVERY

Head of House—Ms D Hawkins

A whole academic year has now passed with me at the helm of Intrepid. Despite the additional grey hairs that I have undoubtedly gained along the way it has been a real pleasure being your head of house and getting to know you all. When I last caught sight of the house stamp totals, Intrepid was in third place and was a mere point five percent behind Challenge. It must be acknowledged that there are some members of Intrepid who have worked incredibly hard to get us off the bottom and up to third place, so a massive thank you to all those students who have worked hard, followed the golden rules and collected your stamps. Hopefully with the help of the new year 7 students in September we can start the new academic year in front and give Endeavour a run for their money! Well done to those of you who achieved highly in the most recent reviews. It is always a pleasure to read the lovely comments that your parents and guardians write on the back of the reviews when you have done well. For those of you who have not done as well as you would like, remember to set yourself some targets for next year so you too can fulfil your potential. Recently the staff at Neville Lovett completed a nomination task to help select possible student house leaders for each of the four houses. After much deliberation between myself and the Intrepid tutors, we were able to select a student house leader from our

group of nominated students. It is with great pleasure that I can announce the Intrepid student house leader for the academic year 2010-2011 will be Lauren Edwins. I am confident that with her enthusiasm and leadership skills Lauren will make an outstanding student house leader for Intrepid and will help lead us to victory in the inter-house competitions and events next year. Lauren will be formally introduced to all of you and the new year 7 students in September. I hope you all have a lovely summer, stay safe and keep out of trouble. Best wishes, Mr Waddington

DISCOVERY NEWSLETTER As head of House I always have a mixture of emotions at this time of the year –I feel sad because the students in Year 11 have left and I wish them well in all their future undertakings, but I am also excited about the new group of students we will have in September. I have already had a chance to meet them on their induction day, and I took the opportunity to congratulate them for being placed into the BEST house. I am certain that all Discovery students will do their very best to make them feel welcome and part of the Discovery family. Talking of which, our newest recruit to the family is our mascot - allow me to introduce you to the Discovery Dragon. Dragons, as we all know, are very wise and magnificent creatures, often very fierce, but also with a sentimental and human side – depending on which dragon history you choose to interpret! Our particular dragon however does not have a name, so if anyone would like to suggest a name, please let me know. Just write your suggestion and your own name on a piece of paper and slide it under the door of Discovery Office.

Last week we had a special assembly to celebrate those students who received ‘outstanding’ for every subject on his or her academic review – in total 16 students. Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Maz Ayling Sophie Baldock Jess Cochran Ayana Benedict Hanna Baker Amy Green Sian Evans Emma Ellis Jess Jarvis Russel Menezes Sophie Kemp Chloe Mullins Riona Menezes Patrick Stewart Ben Wallace-Stock Zara Wills Congratulations to you all, but especially to the Menezes family who have a double whammy, as both Riona (Year 7) and Russel (Year 8) have achieved such a spectacular review. Finally, I would like to wish you all a very relaxing and happy summer holiday and hope that you will all come back feeling refreshed, invigorated and excited about the new academic year. Let’s make the list twice as long next year and make me really proud!

Head of House—Mrs V Campbell

ENDEAVOURENDEAVOUR

Head of House—Mr N Edwards

The summer term has been a long and fruitful one with many events to report on. Having spoken to a number of Year 7 students, they could not believe how quickly the year has gone and all the Endeavour students have settled in well to life at Neville Lovett Community School. Once again the tutor representatives have worked hard in their role acting as the student voice for both the house and the school. I would like to personally thank them and hope that they wish to continue their hard work and maybe represent their respective students next year. I would also like to personally thank Emma Packer for being my Student House Leader and all of the hard work she did this year. Well done Emma and I wish you all the best for life after Neville Lovett. We recently had a non school uniform day and raised a great sum of £121.25 for our house charity. Only last week Sam Johns stood up in assembly and gave a fantastic brief on the charity – The Samantha Dixon Brain Tumour Trust. Sam was able to talk well about the trust as he had been through the organisation. Sam is a most brave and admirable young man. We recently had the year 6 induction day and it was great to see the new intake for the day at Neville Lovett. They clearly enjoyed the day and it was great to meet a number of the students coming into Endeavour house in September.

Once again the inter house competitions took place and we did very well but not well enough as Discovery “pipped” us to the post into second place. Next time round we need to be more focused and enter a lot more of the activities in order to secure that top prize! I am very pleased to announce that Endeavour did win the house stamp cup this year by nearly 1.5%. This is clearly down to you the students and I can only thank you for your fantastic effort throughout the whole year – Well done. On a final note I would like to congratulate the house on another set of excellent reviews. Special mentions go to the following who achieved a full set of outstandings for their Attitude to Learning: Sam John, Shaun Kelly, Charlotte Sigournay, Bethany Traves, Sam Adams, Lauren Wallace, Henry Rustell Jenny Williams. On a final note, I would like to say a big thank you to the house and it has been a wonderful and prosperous year. I hope you all have a great summer break and come back totally refreshed for a new academic year 2010 / 2011.

Congratulations to Mark Appleton who is to be the Challenge Student House Leader for next year. Mark was clearly delighted to be chosen although he admitted to being a little surprised. He describes himself as a cheery person and he wants other students to be able to approach him on any school matters. He is very easy to talk to and all students in Challenge should feel that they can rely on Mark to listen to them and to do what he can to help. A c a d e m i c a l l y , Mark has had a very good year. He should be proud of his recent subject review which reflects his commitment to his studies. His favourite subjects are Maths and ICT. Looking to the future, he would like a career in Engineering. He has just spent 3 days at Southampton Solent University and came back full of enthusiasm. Mark particularly enjoyed making a TV chat show!

The recent round of subject reviews saw a number of students with a high proportion of “Outstanding” grades for attitude to learning. We are very proud of our increasingly good record. Here are 3 of our successful year 9 students-Neil, Jack and Amy. Meet the Mascot for Challenge House! We have

a d o p t e d Clifford as our mascot and he is a member of our house. He will be making an appearance on Sports Day when we hope he will bring us luck.

COMMUNITY NEWSCOMMUNITY NEWS

Canopies which have now been installed on the outside are providing much needed shade for the summer months and protection from the rain in the winter. Many families enjoyed meeting the animals at the Open Day at Easter and participating in Arts and Crafts provided by the Family Forum. Merryfields now has it’s own website which is a joint venture with the IT department at the school www.merryfields.org.uk

We are open throughout the summer and will be running the following groups for Unders 5s - Chat and Play, Stay and Play, Tiny Tots, Bumps and Babies and Dad’s Group including some new activities. Please drop in to the centre and pick up a programme or logon to the website for further details. Family Support Workers continue to support families with children 0-5 years old in the area. If you know a family who would appreciate some support with their young children please ask them to call in or ring the centre on 01329 829522 and ask to speak to a Family Support Worker.

CAMPCAMP Year 7 yet again embarked on Year 7 camp between the 12-16th July at Fairthorne Manor. As the previous weeks had been so glorious we packed for sunshine but got rain, wind and a bit more rain! Despite this an amazing time was had by all. Many students grappled with the cargo net and the tires on Team Challenge, as well as the mud! Some stu-dents were unable to stay in their Kayaks and the rafts that they built did not always withstand the attacks by numer-ous leaders! The Neon Disco was a night to remember and Neville Lovett definitely stood out, especially Mr Southee and Mr Ryan. The zip line and Burma Bridge (a rope bridge of great difficulty) were high favourites and whilst writing this back at school during break I can still hear songs from Thursday nights campfire being sung. The students were a real credit to the school and as they were leaving the coach with bags full of dirty (and wet) clothes and numerous bruises from all the activities we’d taken part in they were still smiling and asking if they could go back next year!

SCHOOL NEWSSCHOOL NEWS The Hampshire Book Awards

Since this year’s launch of the shortlisted books for the Hampshire Book Awards in March, a number of Year 8s have been busy reading the six books to try and come up with a winner. This involved them reading books they might not necessarily select or even like, as the shortlist was chosen by groups of Year 9 students from over 50 Hampshire schools. Not only did our students meet regularly with me and Mrs Jupp for some games in the library after school, they also hosted a discussion and voting visit by students from Bridgemary School, who were also enjoying reading the books.

After 14 weeks of intensive reading, a winner was found. Once we’d chosen our winner, two students represented the school at the voting meeting in Win-chester, submitting the votes from our school. The book that our students had chosen was the runaway winner from all the Hampshire schools. The winning book was ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins. This book comes highly recommended by all of the students and staff; it was clearly the most popular one out of the six. The best part of the voting after noon was when our student representatives, Chloe Mullins and Stephen Howell, won 5 new novels for the school as they were part of a winning quiz team. This has been one of the most successful Hampshire Book Award years, both for the interest shown and the dedication of the readers. The hope now is that the winning author, Suzanne Collins, will come over from the USA in the Autumn to be presented with her award and to meet the young people who voted her book the best.

Frances Farmer

Le marché français From 6th to 8th July, a little taste of France ‘hopped’ its way over to Neville Lovett School in the form of a French mar-ket in which Year 7 students were able to participate in the ‘snail’ of the century! Mrs Ameaux transformed her humble class-room into a fantastic ‘marché français’ complete with café, shop and food stall. ‘Le marché’ was aimed at Year 7 and gave them the opportunity to ‘buy’ typically French products with their hard-earned Euros. Over the course of 4 weeks their French teachers were allocating points in recogni-tion of good work and effort. These points were turned into pretend Euros which could then be spent ‘au marché’. It was a splendid event which all students thoroughly enjoyed. Among the items they could buy using their French were: crepes, diabolo-menthe and grenadine, rucksacks, books, French sweets and French cheese…and the more ad-venturous even had the opportunity to actually sample frogs’ legs and snails!!

Each lesson, students have the opportunity to be rewarded with merits/smiley faces/ points according to their work and effort.

After 4 very good lessons, students are given a postcard . At the back of each postcard , there is a number so students have to collect the full set ( 11 postcards in French and 8 postcards in Spanish) to claim their prize (including a high street voucher, a French vocabulary book, etc.) Yvonne Dunning has been our first student to collect the full set thanks to her commitment and hard-work during her French lessons. Highly recommended

A productive term for the School Allotment Society Members of the S.A.S have been hard at work during the last term digging, planting and clearing the site and pond of weeds and rubbish. This has been no mean feat given the condition of the soil (clay) and the presence of so many weeds! We now have four beds that are full of plants which will hopefully be ready for harvesting when we return in the autumn. In particular we have planted three pumpkin plants, the fruits of which we are planning to use for a display at Halloween. Our potatoes are currently flowering and the onions are coming on a treat. The strawberry and rhubarb plants are now established and next year should start to produce a crop that can be harvested. Our pond is teeming with wildlife including frogs, newts, damsel flies and all sorts of small water creatures such as mayfly larvae and pond skaters. And all this despite the fact that the pond unfortunately leaks! Next year we will be looking into a way of plugging this loss of water. On our last meeting of the year we plan to have a bonfire to get rid of old tree branches and stubborn weed roots. The ashes will then be spread on the beds in the autumn when they are covered for the winter.

Next year the S.A.S will be running until the autumn half term (weather permitting) at which point it will turn into Science Club with lots of indoor activities. S.A.S will return in the spring when we shall be looking to plant an orchard (5 trees is technically classed as an orchard!) along with expanding the variety of plants we grow. We are open to students in all year groups and look forward to welcoming any new Year 7 students in September who would like to give growing vegetables a go.

C. Gibson and the S.A.S team.

SCHOOL NEWSSCHOOL NEWS

Neville Lovett Prom The 2010 Neville Lovett Prom took place at a new venue this year, The Solent Hotel. This was an excellent venue at a reputable 4* hotel, and this was the first prom that the hotel had done. The students turned up on a very hot summers night in an array of vehicles – Horse and carriage, Hot rod car, Limo’s, motor bikes and

an awesome Aston Martin to name but a few. The sun shone brightly and you could not have asked for a better evening to celebrate the end of an era for all those concerned. The girls looked stunning in their prom dresses and the boys “scrubbed” up well for this fantastic occasion. The food was well received and the dance floor was constantly packed throughout the night. A great time was had by all and it was a lovely occasion and venue for the students to finish their 5 years whilst at Neville Lovett.

Young Carers The Young Carers group has had a busy summer term. The students have had three after school cooking sessions, in which it is hoped that they have devel-oped transferable skills which will stay with them for life. A year 8 student said “I enjoyed the cooking it was really fun. I think I would be able to make this myself again at home.” In the autumn term we hope to welcome any new Young Carers and we will meet on a Monday and Thursday lunch time in A3 with a fun packed schedule of events. Mrs. Fletcher, Mrs. Dawkins and Mrs. Hatch.

SCHOOL NEWSSCHOOL NEWS Drama News

Year 11 Final Performances The Year 11 Drama GCSE Group performed their final Piec-es on 6th May to an external Mod-erator. The group explored the theme of secrets and did ex-tremely Well. Naomi Fitzpatrick, Joe Hoggett and Mark Butler all received top marks for their performances.

Year 8 Italian Street Comedy On 28th May 8H1 performed scenes from their Italian Com-edy project: Commedia dell Arte. Each group were a thea-tre company and presented their comedy pieces outside the drama studio – for a little authenticity.

Year 10 BTEC Performing Arts (Drama Unit) As part of their coursework, the group planned and performed their first Devised Drama piece on 27th May. The theme explored was Child Soldiers. Those that saw it witnessed a very powerful piece of theatre. Well done. The group are currently working on their second Devised piece based on a social issue.

Neville Lovett Community School Festival of Achievement 2010

Celebrating the talent in everyone On the evening of Thursday 1st July Neville Lovett held the Festival of Achievement. Students and teachers showcased achievements, gifts and talents across the school. Year 5, Year 6 and current parents were invited to experience a range of activities from biscuit sampling to dissection in Science. The steel band played in the arena and various dance routines were performed in the open air. The student ambassadors toured parents around the school and the newly appointed Head boy and Head girl were on hand to answer any questions.

FESTIVAL OF ACHIEVEMENT FESTIVAL OF ACHIEVEMENT

Amps in the Arena The third annual Amps in the Arena was held on a beautiful sunny evening in July. We were entertained by some of our most talented students, playing in bands or on their own. The music was varied and there was something for everyone to enjoy. It was particularly nice to welcome back so many Year 11s to perform. Unfortunately Liz Harris, our Steel Band teacher, is leaving so it was her final performance but the students gave her a great send off. Thanks to everyone who performed or came and supported.

Year 10 Enterprise Day Once again this year EBP organised a Crime Scene Investigation for Year 10, who had to solve the murder of the fictional Dr Jones. Year 10 split into teams to interview suspects, investigate the crime scene and carry out forensic tests. The three suspects were put on trial in the afternoon and Mr Southee was found guilty of a heinous crime. Well done to Dis-covery, who were most convincing in prosecution!

SCHOOL NEWSSCHOOL NEWS Vocational Studies Health and Social Care and BTEC Children’s Care, Learning and Development. Do you need a baby sitter? On July 1st the Health and Social care group attended a Skills Fayre held at Fratton Park, Portsmouth, where they could find out about the availability of future employment and training prospects in the area and what skills are required in order to acquire those positions which are so in demand today. The current Year 10 Health and Social Care and Children’s Care learning and Development groups have recently completed a one day intensive baby sitting course which included topics like: keeping children safe, communicating with children and parents and managing children’s behaviour positively. The students worked really hard on a very hot day to complete all parts of the course and as a result they were all awarded the certificate. As a consequence we have some students who are well equipped to work within the local community as baby sitters. The Children’ Care group are also due, before the end of term, to receive training concerning Paediatric first aid. This is part of the requirements of their course but is also a very useful life skill for all the students.

Rock Challenge At 8am on the 27th April, 40 students and teachers travelled to Portsmouth to represent Neville Lovett School in the National Rock Challenge. Rehearsals for the dance competition had begun the previous September. There were a few hiccups along the way but thanks to the hard work of the choreographer Chris Todd and the students determination, Neville Lovett performed on the Portsmouth Guildhall stage. The competition was fierce but at 8pm the students took to the stage and performed to their best. Sadly they did not win on the night but did take awards home for: Best Hair, Best make up, Drug Awareness and Healthy Schools. The students wearily returned at midnight after a fantastic day. We have entered into next years Rock Challenge and rehearsals will start in September. With thanks to Miss Fox, Miss Dyke, Nicky Strong and Trish Skinner.

Rebellion & Resistance Day 22nd June 2010 The Year 9 who have opted to study Religious Studies as an option course at KS4 next year visited St Vincent’s College for the day as a team building and gifted and talented exercise. From “History” the students looked at famous rebels and resisters like Boudicca, Osama Bin Laden, Rosa Parks and Dr Martin Luther King. From “Philosophy” they looked at Socrates and the idea of “thinking” and Jesus, looking at ideas of challenging authority; Socrates and Jesus were both killed for their beliefs. The students considered the characters Bat Man and Yoda – taking justice into their own hands which raised the questions are methods and protesting justified overcoming evil, no matter what? Furthermore if you take on the government do you become a terrorist rather than just a rebel or a protester. Finally the question was posed, would you resist authority? – if so why and how? The students worked with other year 9 students from other schools in the area so they could exchange views The day raised many fascinating questions which engaged all the students in “deep thinking”. Our students were a credit to the school. An enjoyable day was had by all!

SPORTS REPORT During the summer term the PE department has sent teams to all of the Fareham and Gosport Schools Athletics competitions. We did very well this year with Year 7 Boys coming 2nd and Girls 5th. Year 8 Boys 6th and Girls 5th. Year 9 Boys 3rd and Boys 5th. As a result of these competitions 14 athletes were selected to represent Fareham and Gosport at the Hampshire Athletics Championships. Special mentions go to Jack Stroulger and Emily Neal who made it through to their finals in their events and Luke Shepherd who claimed 3rd Place in the Javelin in Hampshire. We had teams represent Years 7, 8 and 9 in the Rounders tournaments and a well attended Boys Tennis League in Year 8. This year sees a sad farewell to one of the longest standing members of staff in school. Mr Alan Crowther is retiring after 37 years of teaching. We wish him good luck for his well deserved retirement. Lorraine Sherwood Mr Alan Crowther
