1What is Cataract?

A cataract is an issue associated with eyes inwhich the lens of an eye gets covered by acloud, eventually impairing the vision. A greatpercentage of the population, especially of age65 and above struggle from cataracts.

There are three types of cataracts:

Subcapsular cataract: This type of cataract occurs atthe back of the eye lens. People suffering fromdiabetes or taking steroids are high risk of developingthis type of problem.

Nuclear cataract: It is formed in the nucleus of thelens and this form usually develops with aging.

Cortical cataract: This type of cataract begins fromthe periphery of the lens and them moves towards tothe center in a spoke-like fashion. It usually occurs inthe lens cortex.

Causes of Cataract :

Well age is said to be the primary cause; however,there are other factors as well that contribute to theformation of cataracts.

• Ultraviolet Radiations• Diabetes• Obesity• Smoking• Hypertension• Previous eye injury or surgery• Myopia

Symptoms of Cataract :

Cataract formation proceeds slowly and steadily withtime, with the presence of following symptoms

• Cloudy, blurred or foggy vision• Advanced nearsightedness, mostly in aged

people because of which they may no longerneed glasses.

• Change in color because of cloud on the lens• Problem in vision during day and night time• Sudden changes in glass prescription

Treatment of Cataract :

The first and foremost way to treat cataracts is withthe help of change in prescription and reading glasses.If this method does not make the vision clear, thesecond way is to undergo a cataract surgery. Thissurgery aims at removing the clouded lens from theeye and replacing it with a new, artificial one. Cataract surgery is quite beneficial in restoring thevision, and umpteen people undergo this surgeryevery year across the world.
