7Neutral Bay Public School - Term 2 Week 1

The Bay Times

Honour Board Centennial ProjectOn Friday 12 April, students, staff and invited guests joined together to honour the service and sacrifice of our original ANZACS and the generations of Australian servicemen and women who have defended our values and freedom in wars, conflicts and peace operations over the past 100 years. This year, our ANZAC Day service was especially significant as it marked 100 years since our school Honour Board was first unveiled in 1919, honouring 402 ex-students from Neutral Bay Public School who saw active service between 1914 and 1918, 46 of whom never returned.

We were pleased to welcome Ms Felicity Wilson, MP, member for North Shore, to this important occasion. We were also honoured to invite Corporal Shane Healey (Zachary 1D) to address our school and share the story of his ceremonial uniform and the medals that he wears. Corporal Healey was in the Australian Army from 1995-2018 and served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Year 1 students Zachary and Jax read the Acknowledgement of Country, while Year 6 students Tilly and Phoebe shared the story of one ex-student featured on our Honour Board—Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Gray Marks, the youngest battalion commander in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I. We learned of Lieutenant Colonel Marks’ bravery and inspirational leadership in some of the worst battles of the time, including Gallipoli, Pozieres, Bullecourt, the Somme and Ypres.

An eight-minute slideshow listed all names featured on the Honour Board. In addition, throughout the week, classes visited the Honour Board and learned of the story of another ex-student from Neutral Bay Public School, that of Private Leonard (Len) Walter Jackson. Private Jackson was a boy of only 13 years when he fabricated his name and age to sign up for action in August 1915 and serve in the 55th Battalion. He is more than likely Australia’s youngest ANZAC.

Our Honour Board centennial project was a whole school and community endeavour that brought together many generous people in a common cause of restoring our past. These are detailed below:

ANZAC Day News 1. Community ProjectsAll students from Kindergarten to Year 6 made a poppy for a magnificent ANZAC art display that is exhibited in the corridors of the school office. Community members and families were also invited to make a poppy if they wished. Another community project was our Wall of Remembrance, where families who had a family member serve in the armed forces (in any conflict) were invited to fill out an information card for inclusion in a Wall of Remembrance display. Thank you to the students of 3K for their beautiful artworks made for this display that describe the ANZAC spirit.

The response of our community to both of these initiatives was overwhelming. Thank you to all families who contributed.

2. Biography ProjectMiss Taylor and the students of 5T undertook the huge exercise of researching the soldiers on the Honour Board. This is part of a long-term biography project where we plan to complete a digital archive of the soldiers. We have completed 30 profiles so far, with more to come.

3. Honour Board Restoration ProjectWe are currently seeking to undertake the restoration of our honour board to original condition. Thank you to the efforts of Mrs Goodsell and the support of Ms Felicity Wilson, MP, Member for North Shore and the P&C in helping to seek funding for this project.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you for the assistance of the members of the Honour Board Centennial Project—Mrs Hudson, Miss Mazey, Mrs Dudley, Miss Kriznar, Miss Taylor, Mrs Brown, Miss Clapham and Mrs Stephenson.

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)Here are some of the highlights from the end of our first term in Kindergarten.

Easter Hat Parade

Letterland Day

This term, we will have some exciting visitors in our classroom as part of our science unit, Staying Alive!

We will also be incorporating more physical activities into our learning. We have learned how to use our mini trampoline safely and have practiced jumping out the sounds we can hear in words, such as s/u/n, before we write the word.

We are looking forward to another exciting term!

The last week of school was extremely productive in 1M. We began our week at Vaucluse House where we went back in time around 160 years and experienced a day in the life of the Wentworth family and the servants.

Following on from the excitement of our excursion was ‘Grandfriends' Day’ and we were thrilled to perform a special song in front of our grandfriends who were able to attend. We showed our grandfriends our learning in the classroom and we played a fun Easter ‘Roll and Colour’ addition game with them. We have been learning to write descriptions about certain characters in imaginative texts. We made beautiful cards for our grandfriends that included adjectives to describe our grandfriends and why we love them so much. It was very special to share such a lovely day with the people we love so dearly.

To end a very busy last week of school, 1M hopped into the Easter break with a special surprise from the Easter Bunny. Along with the rest of Stage 1, we participated in the annual Easter Hat Parade where we were able to show each other our creatively decorated Easter Hats that we made in class. It was so exciting to be able to dance with the Easter Bunny and we were very thankful for the gift that was left for us. We are looking forward to another term filled with learning and fun.

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)Grandfriends' DayOn Thursday of Week 10, 5N welcomed their grandfriends into the classroom. During this time students showed their visitors around the classroom and demonstrated their gained knowledge from the term’s work. Students discussed their ‘5 Goals for Year 5’ and the art elements exhibited in their artworks. They talked about their KM buddies and showed photos of them. Finally, students displayed some of their best work to their special visitors and modelled some of the apps on the iPads that have been incorporated into lessons. 5N thoroughly enjoyed their grandfriends coming into the classroom and having the opportunity to show them what they are doing in Year 5!

Welcome back to what we hope will be an exciting and productive term. We hope that you and your family have had an enjoyable holiday break.

On Thursday of Week 11, 4R were very excited for ‘Grandfriends' Day’. The day was a wonderful opportunity for students to share time with their grandparents and special guests and show them why our school is so special.

On Friday of Week 11, 4R hosted a ‘Book Tasting Day’, where the class was introduced to a range of books for independent reading. The key idea was to ignite the love of reading and encourage students to read from a wider selection of reading choices. 4R thoroughly enjoyed the day and our ‘Book Tasting Days’ will now take place once a term!

In Mathematics this week, 4R have been busy learning about Whole Numbers by recognising, representing and ordering numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand and ten thousand. We have also explored the probability of Chance by describing possible everyday events and ordering their chance of occurring. In Literacy, 4R are currently learning about biographies and the instructural elements.
