Networking CASS Chapters in Asia-Pacific Countries Report on the Visit to Shikoku Chapter, Japan (Nov 7 – 8, 2013) With the kind support by the “Networking CASS Chapters in Asia-Pacific Countries” programme, I visited IEEE CAS Shikoku Chapter with my student, Mr. LIN Qiuzhen, on Nov 7 – 8, 2013. Mr. Lin and I arrived in Tokushima City on Nov 7 and were invited to a dinner hosted by Prof. Yoshifumi Nishio and Dr. Yoko Uwate, representatives of the Shikoku Chapter. We chatted on some interesting topics such as research work and CASS activities in a casual environment. In the morning of Nov 8, Mr. Lin and I visited the Nonlinear Circuits Laboratory, Tokushima University, the institution that Prof. Nishio and Dr. Uwate are now with. Mr. Lin first delivered a research seminar on the topic “The Application of Chaos Theory in Joint Coding Schemes”, which is a summary of his PhD work. Then I introduced the IEEE HK CAS/COM Joint Chapter. I first presented the history of IEEE Hong Kong Section and its celebration of the 40 th anniversary in early 2012. After that, I talked about the activities organized by the IEEE HK CAS/COM Joint Chapter, such as conference organization, distinguished lectures and technical seminars. Our joint chapter organizes the IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing, Communications and Computing (ICSPCC) every year, in Hong Kong or a city in mainland China (http://www.ieee.org.hk/icspcc2013/). After the seminar, Prof. Nishio and Dr. Uwate kindly hosted a lunch in a fine Japanese restaurant. We also met Dr. Shintaro Arai of Kagawa National College of Technology. Mr. Lin’s research areas are close to Dr. Arai’s. They exchanged some research ideas and seek possible collaborations in future. Dr. Arai has kindly given the reprints of his papers to us. In the afternoon, we continued our stay in Tokushima University. We visited an English class and talked to the students and teacher. The students there learnt English in an interesting way: by translating the English dialogue in comics to Japanese. After the class visit, Dr. Uwate drove us to Naruto where we saw the famous whirl sea wave. We also visited the bridge museum there and learnt that there are a lot of bridges in Tokushima. We ended our visit in the evening of Nov 8. Tokushima is a beautiful and quiet city. There are not too many cars and people. It is a good place for conducting research work. Prof. Nishio and Dr. Uwate are very active in CASS activities. Finally, I would like to conclude that this visit is very fruitful. We will keep in contact to further explore the possibility in research collaboration or joint technical events organized by Shikoku Chapter and IEEE HK CAS/COM joint chapter. Report on the Visit to Shikoku Chapter, Japan (Nov 7 – 8, 2013)

With the kind support by the “Networking CASS Chapters in Asia-Pacific Countries”

programme, I visited IEEE CAS Shikoku Chapter with my student, Mr. LIN Qiuzhen, on Nov

7 – 8, 2013. Mr. Lin and I arrived in Tokushima City on Nov 7 and were invited to a dinner

hosted by Prof. Yoshifumi Nishio and Dr. Yoko Uwate, representatives of the Shikoku

Chapter. We chatted on some interesting topics such as research work and CASS activities in

a casual environment.

In the morning of Nov 8, Mr. Lin and I visited the Nonlinear Circuits Laboratory,

Tokushima University, the institution that Prof. Nishio and Dr. Uwate are now with. Mr. Lin

first delivered a research seminar on the topic “The Application of Chaos Theory in Joint

Coding Schemes”, which is a summary of his PhD work. Then I introduced the IEEE HK

CAS/COM Joint Chapter. I first presented the history of IEEE Hong Kong Section and its

celebration of the 40th

anniversary in early 2012. After that, I talked about the activities

organized by the IEEE HK CAS/COM Joint Chapter, such as conference organization,

distinguished lectures and technical seminars. Our joint chapter organizes the IEEE

International Conference on Signal Processing, Communications and Computing (ICSPCC)

every year, in Hong Kong or a city in mainland China (http://www.ieee.org.hk/icspcc2013/).

After the seminar, Prof. Nishio and Dr. Uwate kindly hosted a lunch in a fine Japanese

restaurant. We also met Dr. Shintaro Arai of Kagawa National College of Technology. Mr.

Lin’s research areas are close to Dr. Arai’s. They exchanged some research ideas and seek

possible collaborations in future. Dr. Arai has kindly given the reprints of his papers to us.

In the afternoon, we continued our stay in Tokushima University. We visited an English

class and talked to the students and teacher. The students there learnt English in an interesting

IEEE CAS Chapter Chair from Hyderabad Section, India, Srinivas Mandalika and student member, Kaushik Madakasira visited CAS Chapter of Shikoku Section and Tokushima University in Shikoku on November 6, 2013. They were warmly received by the Chapter Chair, Dr. Yoshifumi Nishio and his colleagues.

Hyderabad Chapter Chair and his student addressed a gathering of about 20 faculty and students of Tokushima University for about 30 minutes each. Srinivas Mandalika initially introduced CASS chapter of Hyderabad Section and described activities of this chapter. He later introduced research activities of his group at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Hyderabad and gave a brief talk on ‘Post-CMOS Technologies’.

The student Kaushik Madakasira gave a talk on ‘Wireless Medical Networks’ where he described issues involved in designing medical body area networks.

Both the lectures were heard in rapt attention by the students of Tokushima University and several interesting questions were asked.

After the presentations and Q&A, both the teams discussed about how CASS chapters of two sections can collaborate when Dr. Yoshifumi Nishio made a presentation to the visiting team on activities of Shikoku Chapter. It was agreed that both the chapters should work together through exchange of visits by the chapter officers and jointly organizing conferences, workshops, etc. under the umbrella of IEEE CASS.

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Nishio followed by sumptuous dinner at an Indian restaurant in Tokushima hosted by the Shikoku Chapter.

Title: Relationship between Fast-scale and Slow-scale Oscillations in an Electric Circuit

Abstract: A simple electric circuit with fast-scale and slow-scale oscillations is analyzed from both of the

mathematical and experimental point of view. First, the circuit model is shown. Then, a sampled data

model, for the fast-scale oscillation and slow-scale oscillation, is defined. Finally, using the sampled data

model, relationship between the fast-scale and slow-scale oscillation is analyzed.
