Scope/Responsibility

• Management systems consists of the fol-lowing components (system responsibility)• Operations System (OS)

• Operations Support System (OSS) • Data Communication Network (DCN)• Workstation (WS)• Network Elements (NE)

• Management functionality

Operations System

• Operations System (OS) or more recently referred to as Operations Support System (OSS). Is IT-systems which allow operators (either human or external programs) to perform management operations on the managet telecommunication network.

Data Communication Network

• Data Communication Network (DCN), which is a data communication network used to establish communcation between the operations support system and the managed equipment in the telecommun-ications network, and also between the attached workstations or external man-agement systems and the operations support system

Workstation

• Workstation (WS). Recent management systems are typically using a graphical user interface, where information is presented as icons and colours are used to indicate status. Commands are often performed using a mouse with point-and click. The workstation is partly within the otted linie, it will typically be based on com-mercial of the shelf product with only a minor part being network management specific.

Network Elements

• Network Elements (NE) is the common name for pieces of equipment constituting the telecom-munications network controlled and monitored. On the figure such units are exemplified by Exchange and Transmission systems. Many other types of equipment can occur as network elements, multiplexers, IP-routers, ADSL DSLAMs, ATM switches etc. They are all partly included in management, as they are offering management facilities, which can be accessed remotely.

Management Break Down

Management is frequently divided in two ways:– functional areas: functionality provided– TMN logical layers: levels of abstraction

Management Functional Areas

• Fault Management

• Configuration Management

• Accounting Management

• Performance Management

• Security Management

Organizational Model

• Manager– Sends requests to agents– Monitors alarms– Houses applications– Provides user interface

• Agent– Gathers information from objects– Configures parameters of objects– Responds to managers’ requests– Generates alarms and sends them to mangers

• Managed object– Network element that is managed– Houses management agent– All objects are not managed / manageable
