IntrIntrIntrIntrIntroductionoductionoductionoductionoductionThe NEMA 4X Instrument and Accessory Enclosure forAnatel’s Access 643 and A-1000 S10 Stationary Sensor meetsthe universally accepted NEMA 4X specification for environ-mental protection, as well as Type 12 and Type 4 NEMAratings.
The enclosure, crafted of high-grade stainless steel, is sealed towithstand hose directed water. The shatter-proof windowprovides for visual inspection of the inside of the enclosurethrough the closed door.
Sensors inside the enclosure detect power failures, ground faultinterruptions, out of limit temperatures, and water leaks. Whenthese conditions occur the red warning indicator flashes andpower to the enclosure is turned off until the problems arecorrected. The temperature sensor trips the flashing alarm whenambient temperature reaches 50°C. It automatically resets whenthe temperature cools to 35°C. The liquid sensor detects liquidthat accumulates on the floor of the box. The flashing alarm LED
is easily seen through the window in the door when indicatingany of these conditions. A remote alarm connection is alsoprovided to allow monitoring alarm conditions from a moreconvenient distant location.
A lockable, cantilevered bracket on which the instrument ismounted swings away from the enclosure to allow for conve-nient testing and maintenance of the instrument. One 1/4” inchinlet connection and one 1/8” outlet connection are providedfor the instruments, and one 3/8” inlet connection and one 1/4”outlet connection are provided for the heat exchanger, if thatoption is chosen. The installation kit includes properly sizedadapters for installing either the Access 643 or the A-1000 S10instruments with or without the heat exchanger option.
Accessories available from Anatel for the NEMA 4XInstrument and Accessory Enclosure include a C80 Controller,a local printer, and digital analog convertor (DAC) modules tomonitor temperature or conductivity, or both may be used tomonitor temperature and conductivity of sample water.
Where sample water exceeds 40°C the NEMA 4X may beequipped with an integrated heat exchanger which requiresindustrial cold water (ICW). The heat exchanger allows fortesting sample water with temperatures above 40°C and up to99°C.
SECTION 1. Introduction

Components of the NEMA 4X include:
1. AC Power Terminal. The AC Power Terminal isused to connect the box to 120 VAC power.
2. Power Distribution Box. The power distribution boxwith AC switch, GFCI protected outlet, and electronicsconnection. The GFCI breaker protects all other outlets in theNEMA 4X box. The power distribution box houses no userserviceable parts.
3. Power Connector Block. The power connectorblock provides power outlets for all accessories.
4. Air Circulation Fan. Air is circulated within the boxby the fan to mix the air and allow continuous heat transfer outof the box through its surface.
5. Heat Exchanger. The optional heat exchanger isfactory installed.
6. Remote Alarm Connector Block. A remote alarmconnector block provides a 10 mA, 5V maximum source forconnecting either an audible or visual alarm monitoring.

Enclosure
Anatel recommends that the NEMA 4X Instrument and Acces-sory Enclosure be mounted on a wall or specially built stand. The enclosure weighs over 100 pounds empty and over 118pounds when all instruments are installed and requires a sub-stantial mounting structure. The floor of the box should be levelwhen the box is mounted.
When mounting, provide a minimum of a 1” standoff from thewall to allow for air circulation behind the enclosure.
1. Mounting. The back of the enclosure has four holes to beused for mounting bolts in the pattern shown at the right. Theholes are .438” in diameter to accommodate 3/8” bolts. Boltsmust be stainless steel and sealing washers must be used tomaintain the NEMA rating.
2. Plumbing connections for units without a heat exchanger. If a heat exchanger is not used, the holes provided to access thewater connections for the heat exchanger will be plugged.Connect sample water to the Instrument sample IN fittingshown in the diagram on the right. Connect the Water OUTfitting to a tube to the drain.
3. Plumbing connections for units equipped with a heatexchanger. If a heat exchanger is used the sample water mustcirculate through it for cooling before it is analyzed. Connectthe ICW to the ICW IN and ICW OUT ports to circulate coldwater through the heat exchanger. Connect the sample water tothe Water sample IN fitting of the heat exchanger. Connectthe Water sample OUT port to the Instrument sample INport using the preshaped tubing with appropriate fittings foundin the installation kit.

Installing the TOC Analyzer
The NEMA 4X enclosure is compatible with the Access 643and the A-1000 S10 and A-1000 XP Stationary Sensors. Mountthe TOC analyzer of your choice on the hinged instrumentmounting panel inside the enclosure. Each instrument requiresdifferent mounting screw locations shown in the photos at theright.

ing panel.
5. ANET and remote alarm. Access for cables for the ANETconnection and a cable for a remote alarm is also on the leftside of the enclosure. Cables must be passed through the NMP1/2” liquid tight conduit fitting using liquid tight conduit(supplied by the buyer) to maintain the NEMA 4X rating.
Connect the remote alarm to the terminal provided in the box.

The installation kit includes two 1/8” diameter socket shoulderscrews (8-32 x 1/2”) to be installed in the upper holes of theinstrument mounting panel. Install these screws in the appropri-ate locations and hang the instrument on the panel by its upperbrackets.
Install a 10-24 x 1/2” phillips head screw from the installationkit in the two lower brackets to secure the instrument.
Connect the water sample line to the 1/4” inlet (labeled: Instru-ment sample IN) and 1/8” outlet (labeled: Water OUT)stainless steel compression fittings. The Access 643 Analyzerconnections match these fittings. The A-1000 S10 outlet fittingrequires a 1/4” to 1/8” adapter fitting to make the connection. All necessary fittings and tubing are included in the installationkit. (See the Anatel Access 643 TOC Analyzer User Guide orthe A-1000 TOC Analysis System User Guide for more infor-mation.)

MaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenanceMaintenance
1. The NEMA 4X Instrument and Accessory Enclosure requires minimum maintenance. Follow recom-mended maintenance and service procedures for the instrument and all accessory components installedin the enclosure. Refer to the Anatel Access 643 TOC Analyzer User Guide or the A-1000 TOC AnalysisSystem User Guide.
2. From time to time test the GFCI circuit to be sure it is working properly.
3. Inspect the enclosure for signs of leaks.
4. Clean the stainless steel surface with an appropriate cleaner.
CAUTION: Do not use abrasive cleaners on the window. Do not use steel wool to clean the stain-less steel surfaces.
5. Check inside the box for printer paper that may pile up inside if not removed periodically.
