1301 French Knot Garden – Alison Wilson
Bring your own photo to create a miniature French knot garden.
(Alison will have some ideas if you don’t have a photo). You
will be using one strand of floss to create your own individual
garden. This class is suitable for all levels. Good light and good
eyesight are the only requirements! The final size is 3cm x 5cm.
Kit cost: $5
Tutor Profile
Alison is a member of the Canterbury Embroiderers’ Guild.
She is an enthusiastic stitcher, and loves to share her passion
with keen embroiderers of all levels of experience. She has been
involved in the textile field for many years, holds part 1 of City
and Guilds qualification, and N.Z. Certificate in Machine
Embroidery. She has tutored throughout N.Z. at several
conferences, Wanaka and at What a Weekend.
1302 Russian Pearl Embroidery – Jane Lester
Apparently there was and is a ready supply of cheap seed pearls
in Russia which explains the popularity of this type of
embroidery in the past. Pearl embroidery was used on Icon
frames and the Icons themselves, head dresses and clothing,
some of it ecclesiastical. There are many examples on the
internet.
This piece has been designed to incorporate many techniques
including beading, padded gold work and Or Nué .
Beginners should be able to manage this piece easily and those
with more experience will enjoy a relaxed class.
The design is approximately 20cm x 15cm
There will be a full kit supplied at a cost of $55. This will include
Dupion silk (with the design on it) and all threads and beads.
Tutor Profile
Jane has been stitching for years and has taught all over New Zealand including at The Great Escape,
Wanaka Embroidery School, Tui Ridge, Stitch Away Hawke’s Bay and ANZEG Conferences. She has done
the ANZEG tutors’ course twice and particularly enjoys teaching beginners.

1303 Create Art Cloth from Paper Fabric
Christine McGuigan
This class is for anyone who can sew – not necessarily in a straight line! No
skills required other than enthusiasm and a joy of colour.
Using a combination of light paper, glue and fabric, you will construct a
product called paper-fabric. The approximate size is 40 x 30cm.
The focus of this class is to embellish the piece with paint, stamps and
stencils, hand and machine embroidery and appliqué. It is easy and very
compelling. You do not need to know how to machine embroider, you only
need to know how to thread your machine.
Kit Cost: $30
Tutor profile
Chris has spent the last few years working up a textile storm in
her Mapua shed, Heart Gallery. A lifelong love of painting,
sewing and fabric work contributes to the many workshops she
now holds for groups to learn new skills in sewing and multi-
media, and experiment with new techniques in a wide variety of
media. You can visit www.heartgallery.co.nz to see more of
Chris’s work.
1304 Beginners’ 3D Needle Felting – Fiona Macrae
In this workshop you will learn the basics of needle felting (dry
felting) and make needle felted shapes, beads and 3D animals. No
previous experience required.
Participants will find out about:
• The different types of needle felting needles and how to use them.
• Working with wool sliver.
• How to shape wool using needle felting needles.
• How to develop a basic wire armature and needle felt over it.
Participants will sculpt:
• a flat shape suitable for a brooch/pin
• needle felted beads
• a 3D figure over a simple wire armature
Kit cost: $15 if felting needles and merino sliver are supplied
Tutor Profile
Fiona has been needle and wet felting for about 20 years. She enjoys
sculptural needle felting as it enables her to develop a variety of forms
using fairly simple materials. Fiona also weaves tapestry and is a
compulsive sock knitter.

1305 Creative Crewel work - Glenys Fry
Students will work to create an individual design for a
small piece of crewel work suitable for a bag or cushion.
We will be sourcing our inspiration from New Zealand
landscape artists or a photograph of a landscape that is
special to you.
Work will be with wool on linen twill and will look at
ways to use traditional crewel work stitches and patterns
in a contemporary design. The first day will be spent on
design, colour and stitching. Wool and fabric is available
from Broomfields at the Trader’s Mall.
This class is suitable for all abilities.
Kit cost: Linen Twill can be supplied as a 25cm square piece at a cost of $10 or 50cm square at a cost of $38
Tutor Profile
Glenys was a long-time member of Canterbury Guild but now lives in Marlborough. Glenys was the
recipient of the ANZEG Study Grant, which she used to spend a week studying with Val Holmes in France.
Glenys enjoys all kinds of embroidery but her real passion is in creating original pieces of embroidery.
Following a class with Phillipa Turnbull she has started exploring crewel work with a New Zealand twist.
1306 Wessex Stitchery – Julie Clemett
Introducing Wessex stitchery with a choice of two small
everyday useful projects: a needle-case or a glasses case.
Each design features a number of the basic combinations
used in Wessex embroidery.
The projects will not be fully completed within class
time. Full instructions for the construction are included
in the notes, and demonstrated in class. Participants
provide their own choice of fabric and threads.
This class is suitable for all abilities. A needs list will be provided.
Notes: $3.00
Tutor Profile
Julie began stitching at an early age and has enjoyed progressing
through many, mainly traditional techniques, then using and
combining these techniques into modern projects. She enjoys
assisting students to master a new technique, building confidence in
and appreciating their developing talents.

1307 Crazy Patchwork – Karen Brodeson
Learn how to construct the crazy patchwork base by hand in
the traditional way. The morning will be spent choosing from
your selection of fabrics and laying down the base ready to be
surface stitched, then on to the fun bit of embellishing the
surface with beautiful embroidery and beading techniques.
Play with a variety of silk ribbon, beading, folded ribbon
roses, button work etc. Make a Bag/ Wall Hanging/Cushion
cover. This is a hand stitching workshop. There is no pre
class preparation.
Full instructions and embellishment patterns are included.
Start gathering your beautiful fabrics and embellishments.
Class suitable for all levels.
Kit cost: TBA
Tutor Profile
Karen is a textile/fibre artist living in Nelson. She loves stitching of all
types both traditional and contemporary and always has two or more
projects on the go at one time. Around 20 years ago she started teaching
crazy patchwork classes but soon progressed to beading and
contemporary
classes of her own techniques and designs.
All Karen’s classes have original designs and full instructions.
1308 Lefkara Whitework – Kerry Seeley
Lefkara is a whitework technique originating in Cyprus. It consists
of cutwork and surface stitchery and also has some interesting
lacework hems.
This piece is approximately 15cm square and includes various motifs
in satin stitch and eyelets. The hem is very simple and the effective
lace edge can be used with other techniques and takes very little
fabric. The back is finished with a four sided edge which makes it
easy to sew together.
Class suitable for students with some previous stitching experience.
Kit Cost: $1.00
Tutor Profile
For Kerry, white work in all its counted forms, including needle lace, is a passion along with a host of other
techniques. Kerry’s formal qualifications are Sixth Form Certificate Embroidery and the Embroiderers’
Guild Drawn Thread I Certificate. She has taught at Conference and regional weekends over the past 25
years and much to her surprise has students coming back for more.
