These are all associated with meanings which in different situations can mean different things. They therefore allow the audience to have an immediate understanding.

Barthes wanted to create a way for people to deepen their understanding of language, l iterature, and society.

Semioti cs can be seen in many types of media including fi lms, video games and music videos.

Semioti cs is used so that the audience knows how they are supposed to perceive a character/ fi lm/ arti cle.

Examples of semioti cs in fi lms:Horror – Dark l ighti ng / clothing, Shadows Rom Com – Soft lighti ng, the colour redCrime - Rough/ Tough appearances, Weapons, Skinheads
