When Azuka’s Literary Manager Allison Heishman gave me Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom she told me not to read it at night or while I was alone.I scoffed at her, and did exactly what she told me NOT to do. By the end of theread I was madly texting her telling her how freaked out I was. She ratherunsympathetically responded, “I told you!”

Now, I’m not a big horror fan – it’s a genre of film and literature that’s neverreally done much for me. Nor am I in any way, shape or form a gamer. However, this story really got to me. As I continued to re-read it, I was struck by what theplaywright had to say about life in the computer age. As someone who didn’tgrow up with computers as a part of my day to day life, it’s been extraordinaryfor me to watch as computers and the internet moved from being used for veryspecific tasks by certain groups of people, to becoming a significant part of thefabric of our daily lives. For the most part I think that’s a good thing (just TRYand pry my iphone from my hand!).

That said, I have been acutely aware for some time that the wonder of theinternet; the ability to chat with someone in real time on the other side of theworld, to have encyclopedic knowledge at your finger tips, comes at a cost. Yousit at a computer ALONE. You may be speaking to the world, but you’re doing sofrom a very solitary place. It’s that dichotomy that has given me pause. I am inno way trying to demonize computers or the gamers that use them (and neitheris Jennifer Haley), but to ignore the social disconnect that’s happening isn’t agood thing either. Maybe it’s why I love theater so much; it’s one of the last greatgathering places, where we experience something with other people, not justat the same time as other people.

I hope you enjoy Azuka’s first venture into horror. If you get truly frightened, maybe the person next to you can be comforting. If not, you can always text afriend or put something on your Facebook page—in fact I hope you will!
