Positive Ageing Winter News 2019 Half the year has already gone, and another half of the year is still available to all of us to try something new at the Affinity Club. I am so excited with our new calendar of activities for the next three months. Perhaps, you now feel inspired to join our Affinity Choir. Come and “Sing with us” every Wednesday afternoon at 1.30pm with Ilsa, our conductor and John, our music director. All those who came to our Biggest Morning Tea were impressed with the choir’s performance. All you need is a love of singing. There are lots of good reasons to join our choir. According to recent studies, singing in a choir improves our mood as it lowers anxiety, stress and depression. This is due to the deeper breathing associated with singing, that is also used in meditation. Singing in a choir gives us a sense of belonging to something bigger than ourselves. In fact, this is great for seniors, in particular, as it improves their quality of life. There are also the positive physical effects such as lower blood pressure, stronger respiratory muscles and less stuttering. As well as improving our memories, singing in a group provides a sense of awe not just for the audience but for the participants too. This sense of awe leads to an enhanced sense of altruism. People become more helpful towards others. This might be because people singing in a group can create something of great beauty that they could not achieve on their own. It can lead to them feeling happier and more comfortable in their own skin. I hope these findings, from ArtistWorks.com, make you curious enough to come and join our choir. Everyone is welcome to come and be part of our singing community. Our new activities from July are:

• Learn an app (every fortnight on our usual Thursday computer support café), • Learn Macramé and make a plant pot holder

• Join us on a Monday to see a Memorable Movie of the ‘silver screen’ with a slice of Pizza.

Also, from this month, we are bringing back “Asian Connection”. This is an opportunity to chat, eat, play and catch up with fellow members. I hope we can make this space a great time to meet up and have delicious food cooked by members for our members. Check the Calendar for upcoming dates.

Finally, we are celebrating Affinity’s 7th Year! The club keeps on growing as well as its number of members. The 2019-2020 Annual Membership registration starts this month. All seniors over 55 years of age with a ‘can do’ attitude are welcome to join us. Registration forms are available at Nedlands Community Care reception.

The annual membership fee is $30. Our members are entitled to discounts in on all our classes and events. Our classes/activities are very reasonably priced, even with some activities having a fee adjustment for this financial year.

There are no Winter blues at Affinity! Come over and join a new class, embrace a new skill, teach us something or just come and meet a great bunch of people over a cuppa. May the following pages inspire you to try something new. Happy reading!

What we did in Autumn

Good Company presentation: how to live your best life.

Caroline Broadway and Stacey Scott, from Movement Mechanics Exercise Physiology, gave us a great presentation on how exercises can improve our lives and our balance. The talk included audience participation with props used in their classes which made the session fun and educational.

Nedlands Affinity Club

Laughter Yoga demonstration - 25 April

@ the Windsor Cinema before viewing the film Gloria Bell

Trish Jamieson, Affinity’s Laughter Yoga facilitator, showed film goers how a combination of laughter exercises with deep breathing in between and childlike playfulness with eye contact soon connects everyone in contagious laughter. If you have not tried Laughter Yoga, come and meet Trish every second Wednesday of each month. Laughter is definitely guaranteed for all!

Mandalas Workshop with Christine Smith - 29 April

Christine followed up from her Mindfulness presentation last February with a Mandalas workshop. It was a very nice and relaxing session.

Mother’s Day celebration - 13 May

We celebrated Mother’s Day with a High Tea and watched the movie “Mother’s Day” with Julia Roberts. Our members had a lovely afternoon @ NCC. They enjoyed watching the film with popcorn followed by High Tea served in the Affinity Vintage tea cups. We had a great discussion and enjoyed cake in great company. Thanks to Shawn Smidt who helped us set up the room and all the members who stayed behind to put our precious vintage cups back in the cupboards.

Waratah Walkers 10 year celebration on 14 May

Celebrating after their walk at The Local

Congratulations to Trish Jamieson and the Waratah Walkers on their 10 years of walking together!

This friendly bunch of walkers keeps on growing every year. Shelagh Read, a Waratah Walker for four years did not know anybody in the same age group when she moved from Melbourne. She saw the Waratah Walkers group advertised and decided to give it a go. She found it was a good decision as she found new friends as well as an exercise group! Thanks Trish for your leadership and for inspiring our community to walk together. Well done Waratah Walkers, may your love of walking and long friendships continue for many more years.

What we did in Autumn - The Biggest Morning TeaIt was a great day for all involved in our annual fundraising event for the Cancer Council. We started the day at 7.30am setting up Dalkeith Hall: there was bunting, raffle tables, food tables, registration tables and tables suitably dressed up with vintage crockery and the beautiful Nedlands roses, of course. At 10am: guests arrived. Many have not seen each other for a while, some brought their neighbours and family. The Affinity Choir dressed in pink and performed five beautiful songs. We loved when they sang ‘Rawhide” with so much gusto and their cowboy hats were thrown up in the air. It was such a fun song. We had a break for everyone to have seconds and replenish their cups. By 11am, Ilsa, our Choir Conductor, invited the audience to join the choir in a sing-a-long. The lyrics were on a big screen on the stage so there were no excuses! It was amazing. The audience participation was beyond my expectations. It is just a testimony that singing as a community is engaging, enjoyable and uplifting. We then proceeded with drawing the raffles and there were lots of nice prizes - thank you for all your donations. It was wonderful to see so many happy faces.

My thanks to all our volunteers, Social Support clients and Affinity members that were part of the Affinity’s Biggest Morning Tea. Also, thanks to Wayne at “The Local” Dalkeith for donating the yummiest pizzas, to Christine at Martineau’s Patisserie for two beautiful cakes and biscuits, Dalkeith Pharmacy, our friendly chemist at Waratah Village for their hamper valued @ $110, Dalkeith IGA Delizioso and Dalkeith Newsagency & Post Office for their raffle prizes respectively. Also, thanks to our member Sue Ward, who prepared two dozen jars of Tangerine Jams - which were delicious. At 1.30pm when everyone left and all monies were accounted for, I was very happy to find that we managed to raise $1864.60! Monies were deposited in the afternoon at the local Westpac bank. A great result to finish a great morning.

2019 Affinity Club Satisfaction SurveyOur members views and responses to your suggestionsIn February this year, the City of Nedlands undertook its annual members’ survey to identify their level of satisfaction with the service and activities provided. It also helps identify new activities that could be provided to continue to engage with long-term members and encourage new members.

The survey was available for over a month on Your Voice Nedlands (online) and in hardcopy format. The results from the survey were assessed and a summary of the feedback received is below.

Participants were asked, amongst other questions, how satisfied they were with the services and activities provided by the Affinity Club (very satisfied/ satisfied/not satisfied). This question was followed by whether they would recommend joining the club to a friend(s) (yes/no).

The overall satisfaction rating was 83% for very satisfied (75% in 2018) and a further 17% responses (25% in 2018) indicated that they were satisfied. All respondents further indicated that they would recommend the club to their friends to join.

In respect of what participants like about the Affinity Club? There were several comments received which included the following:

• Members value the social contact, meeting like-minded people and friendliness of the Club, especially with the loss of loved ones. They thought that the Club provided a wonderful opportunity for seniors to interact with others, increase their social well-being and can participate in all the varied activities in a pleasant environment

• Some members enjoyed reading the newsletters, the plans and reports and being kept informed of the Affinity Club’s matters and activities. They thought the choices of activities are great, at low cost. Ease of parking and access was also seen as a positive.

• The respondents were very complimentary of the staff: they are supportive, caring and enthusiastic and provide a friendly, well operated Centre and activities.

Finally, there were suggestions made in respect of areas to improve and activities to include in the Club. Here are the suggestions and my responses:

Dalkeith Hall: There is now air conditioning (requested over the years) and a much-needed storage cupboard. It would be great to have a PA system installed and have the hall painted though it is not planned or budgeted yet.

Holding a Zumba Class every week at Mt Claremont: I can understand your frustration and classes will be running weekly from July.

A second day for Table Tennis: we have opened a second day on Fridays upon request of so many of you. I am happy to say that it is now running.

New microphones: We have a couple of them though the acoustic in the hall does not help us.

Page 13: Nedlands Affinity Club...Pilates for seniors – 9am Tuesdays at Dalkeith Hall Pilates with props – 11am Fridays at Dalkeith Hall Chair Pilates – 11am Tuesdays at The Hive, Mt

Nedlands Affinity Club

97 Waratah Avenue, Dalkeith WA 6009 | 9386 6170 | [email protected] | nedlands.wa.gov.au

Roster of volunteers: Usually there are volunteers rostered though I cannot anticipate when they are unable to come. For those instances, it would be helpful to have a second member nominated within each activity to assist. I will implement this arrangement in the next few weeks.

Badges for everyone: as we are about to start registrations for the 2019-20 Affinity Memberships, I will provide members with a clip/badge to wear when attending activities at the club.

Assist with helping other community organisations/consider belonging to linkwest.asn.au: in respect of these requests, please come and see me to discuss it.

Activities suggested: a quiz afternoon, Tai Chi, Lawn bowls, a day playing golf, Crib , Meditation, Music group, own orchestra and art group. I will consider any activity if there is a group of at least 8 people committed to do it on a weekly/monthly basis and we have the resources and suitable venues. Any member keen to start one of the activities mentioned, please contact me and we can discuss the viability of such an activity.

Speakers: aged care, legal aide, preparing a will, horticulture, history of Nedlands. There are plans for a talk about aged care and preparing a will later this year. In respect of legal aide, horticulture and history of Nedlands, I will keep these suggestions for my ongoing planning.

Events: Easter, Tour of Sunset Hospital site, Classical Music Appreciation. Thanks for these suggestions. We missed Easter. We just had a Mother’s Day event which was very much enjoyed by our members. I will put your other two suggestions in my planning book.

Classes: Ukulele, knitting, crochet, sketching, drawing, painting, cooking, craft, language (French/Italian) building an owl’s nest or bee house, computer classes, how do deal with slides and photographs. Although, I could not organize all on these classes, some of them can be opened for discussion. For July, we are planning a “Learn an app” class, Macramé and cooking as part of our ‘Asian Connection’ meetings once a month. It is great to try something new and learn it with friends. Some of these classes, like languages will probably be best taken at Tresillian or by joining a free conversation class at The Hive (Mt Claremont Community Centre). Ukulele will be fun to do though I will need to be sure that there is enough level of interest to consider it. In all cases, please come and see me and I will take it from there.

Thanks for taking the time to participate in this survey. Your opinions are very much valued and we appreciate your kind comments. The names of all participants who provided their details went into a raffle, which was drawn last Thursday 30 May in the presence of members attending the Biggest Morning Tea. Christine Onley was the lucky winner of the $20 Myer voucher. Congratulations Christine!
