Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine(NECTM), to be held in Marina Congress Centre in Helsinki on 21-24 May 2008. The conference is organisedby a coalition of European travel medicine and international health societies and organisations ascontinuation of the very successful 1st NECTM conference held in Edinburgh.The conference is also followingthe long tradition of the Scandinavian Forum for Travel Medicine.

The scientific programme will cover the current hot and all time favourite topics in travel health. Specialthemes will include arctic medicine and traveller’s health in the Baltic countries and Russia. In addition tojoint plenary sessions the programme will emphasise interactive learning and practical pre- and post-travelhealth issues.

The social programme of the conference will combine Finnish tradition in architecture, music and dance withthe unique national obsession for sauna. The very long daylight hours in May will ensure that visitors willhave ample opportunity to explore the attractions of Helsinki, the white maritime capital of Finland. Thosewilling to extend their stay can also explore other parts of Finland or cities of Tallinn, St. Petersburg andStockholm in the neighbouring countries, all within an easy distance from Helsinki.

Helsinki-Vantaa AirportHelsinki-Vantaa Airport has been rated one of the world’s best airports. Onward connections fromHelsinki to St. Petersburg, Tallinn and Stockholm are also excellent.

Airport transportationFinnair provides regular bus transportation between the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and the CityTerminal near the Railway Station at a cost of approximately 5 €. Taxis between the Airport and theHelsinki city centre cost approximately 30-40 € (30 minutes). Group taxis are also available at theairport (Yellow Line and Airport Taxi, cost approximately 20 € per person).

Transportation by boatHelsinki is easily reached by high-class ferries from Stockholm, Sweden (overnight by Silja Line andViking Line) and from Tallinn, Estonia (several lines, duration 1.5 to 3.5 hours).

Transportation by trainThere is a good daily train connection between Helsinki and St.Petersburg. The duration of the trainride is about 6 hours.

Letter of invitationUpon request, the congress organizers will be pleased to send a personal letter of invitation toenable participants to obtain supporting funds or visas for attending the conference. These invitationletters cannot be considered as an offer of financial support by the organisers.

Visa and passportsEC citizens only need their national identification papers. Carrying passport is, however,recommended for EC citizens especially if you plan to travel to Tallinn, Estonia. Citizens from mostother countries will need a valid travel passport. They are encouraged to contact their local Finnishembassy or consulate to enquire about the necessity of visa application. If you plan to travel toSt.Petersburg, you will need both passport and visa to Russia.

Climate and clothingThe average day-time temperature in Finland in May is around 15-20°C (55-70°F). Evenings arecooler. Occasional rain showers may occur. It is advisable to bring some warm clothes with you.

Name badgesParticipants and accompanying persons are obliged to wear the official conference name badges onall conference occasions. Additional fee will be charged for reproduction of lost name badges.

ExhibitionThe commercial exhibition highlighting medical devices, pharmaceutical products and books will take placein the lobby areas of Marina Congress Center.Access to the exhibition is free for registered participants.Theexhibition will be open throughout the meeting hours on Thursday-Saturday, 22-24 May 2008.

Cancellations and replacementsCancellations will be accepted until 30 April 2008.The full amount will be refunded less 50 € to covercancellation costs. No refunds will be made for cancellations received after this date. Cancellationsmust be made in writing by e-mail, telefax or airmail to the conference secretariat. Reimbursementwill not be given for late arrival, unused services, unattended events or early departure from theconference. Replacements of participants are accepted at any time at an extra charge of 30 €.

All listed hotel room rates above are per night and include value added tax (VAT) and breakfast.

Booking schedule

A number of rooms in different categories have been booked at attractive rates since Helsinki may becrowded during the conference period. All hotels are located close to each other as this is moreconvenient for transport, shopping, sightseeing and dining.

To secure accommodation of your choice, you should register as early as possible. Prices quoted areper room per night and include accommodation, buffet breakfast, hotel service charge and valueadded tax (VAT). All hotel reservations, especially after 31 March 2008, will be subject to availability.

There will be no organised bus transportation since most of the hotels are located within walkingdistance from the congress venue Marina Congress Center.

Hotel deposit

A hotel deposit of one night should be paid in advance together with the conference fees. The hoteldeposit will be deducted from the total cost of accommodation.The remaining hotel payment will becharged at the hotel upon check-out. The hotel deposit is non-refundable if the cancellation is madeafter 30 April 2008. Possible cancellations or changes to reservations should be made in writing by e-mail, telefax or airmail. Hotel bookings should be made through the conference secretariat in orderto benefit from the special rates.

General conditions

As soon as the registration form is received, all reservations will be completed based on requestswhich, however, will be subject to availability. Confirmation for hotel accommodation will beincluded in the confirmation letter confirming the participation for the conference. No hotel voucherswill be needed since the conference secretariat will transfer the hotel deposit amounts to each hoteland the deposit amounts will be deducted from the remaining hotel invoice to be paid at the hotelduring the conference.

Participants are requested to pay their personal expenses directly to the hotel at latest whenchecking out. Please indicate on the Registration Form if arrival at the hotel is scheduled after 18:00so the conference secretariat can inform the hotel about your late arrival. The regular check-out timeis 12:00. Please note that all room reservations will be made on ”first come, first served” basis andall reservations will be subject to availability.

During the tour you will see allthe main sights in Helsinki city center: sights in the Mannerheim Street, Railway Station, the Presidential Palace, the UspenskiCathedral. At Senate Square we will see the University Main Building and Lutheran Cathedral all displaying neo-classicalarchitecture of the 1840’s. We will continue walking from Senate’s Square to the colourful Market Square by the sea in theSouth Harbour, we will also visit indoor Market Hall. The tour continues by bus to Kaivopuisto Park and diplomatic residencesand to the magnificent Temppeliaukio Church, carved into solid rock. After visiting Sibelius Monument transfer back to theconference venue.

Porvoo is the second oldesttown of Finland.The medieval plan of the town site with its narrow cobblestone lanes and wooden houses has been preservedand protected with great care. After that you may wander into thesmall handicraft shops scattered along the lanes and offering pottery, rugs, handmade shawls or just candy. Depart Porvoo forHaikko Manor for lunch. After lunch return to Helsinki to the conference venue.

This tour will show the old and new urban strategies of the city, public buildings and housingdevelopments. Ruoholahti, an area by the sea, provides a good example of how an area that was once a harbour has becomean active centre of culture, information technology and pleasant urban housing. During the tour we will get to know thedifferent architectural time layers from neo-classical to art-noveau buildings and to present day glass cubes. The tour willdepart from Marina Congress Center and it will end in the city centre.

Design tourDate Saturday, 24 May 2008Time 14:00–17:00Place Departure from Marina Congress CenterPrice 60 €Finnish design is world famous for its elegant simplicity, functionality and closeness to nature. Departure from MarinaCongress Center with your local English speaking guide by private bus. First we head towards Arabia factory famous for itsceramic and glassware design and products. Local guide takes us around Arabia museum, gallery and factory and there will bepossibility do shopping at Arabia shop. We continue to Design Forum Finland, which is an information centre of designpresenting a wide range of information and material on the achievements and strengths of Finnish design. We visit the currentdesign exhibitions and the Design Forum shop. We also have a look at what Finland has to offer in textiles and visitMarimekko design shop at Esplanade before returning back to the conference venue.
