It has been an honor to spend the last nine months helping establish the blueprint for the future success of Nebraska Athletics while getting to meet so many great Husker fans across the state and the nation. For many years I admired the consistent success of Nebraska Athletics while serving as an athleticdirectorinthePac-12Conference.Itisonethingtoadmiresomethingfromafar,andanothertohavetheopportunitytowitnessfirst-handthe amazing people, facilities and support surrounding this outstanding university and its programs.

I believe we have the resources to compete for championships at all levels in all sports. I also believe that providing some new leadership in several keyareascanprovidethesparksneededtoignitethefireforbuildingchampionshipteams.Ialsoknowthataunifiedapproachacrossalllevelsfromcoaches and student-athletes, athletic staff and university administration and our amazing fan base are essential to our future success.

While all those accomplishments are impressive, we strive every day to improve. Scott Frost, the 2017 National Coach of the Year, took over the leadership of our football program and has begun to reset the course for our future. Scott and his staff have done remarkable things together, and we believe they will put Nebraska back on top in college football. It may take a little time, so your support and your patience may be major factors in our future success. We have also made several other key changes in the past few months with the hiring of Mark Hankins to lead our men’s golf team and Sean Maymi to guide our men’s tennis program. We believe great support and a little patience will be key ingredients for their teams as well.

At Nebraska, our mission is to serve the University, its students, the state and Husker fans with Integrity, Trust, Respect, Teamwork and Loyalty while providing our student-athletes with the resources and support they need to be successful in academics, athletics and life. In 2017-18, 120 student-athletes earned their undergraduate degrees from Nebraska, while four captured CoSIDA Academic All-America honors to push our nation-leading total to 333 all time across all sports. Service projects and community outreach by our student-athletes and staff reached tens of thousands of Nebraskans across the state, and we continued to expand our service beyond our borders, including a service trip to Panama in May.

We are proud of all of our athletic teams, and thankful for our great fan support, which helped us rank in the top 25 nationally in attendance across nine sports, including football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, soccer, men’s and women’s gymnastics and wrestling in 2017-18.

On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, thank you for all you do and for your continued support of Nebraska Athletics.

Go Big Red!

LIFE SKILLSMAKING A DIFFERENCE

NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLSComplementing academic support services is Nebraska’s comprehensive Life Skills program, continually recognized as a model of service to prospective, current and former student-athletes. TheDepartmentofAthleticsprovidesLifeSkillsprogrammingforeverystudent-athlete,firsttoacclimate them to the University of Nebraska, then to promote their total-person development.

SERVICE TRIP TO PANAMAFollowing the 2018 spring semester, Husker student-athletes were given the opportunity to participate in the fourth annual service abroad trip. Twenty-one student-athletes traveled to Panama in May to help the community of Bocas del Toro lay the foundation for an elementary school. These “No Filter” service trips have provided amazing opportunities for current and former Husker student-athletes to enhance their cultural competencies while using their leadership and teamwork skills to provide new opportunities for children in less fortunate communities around the globe.

Above: Husker student-athletes pose with school children from Bocas del Toro, Panama on the 2018 No Filter Service Trip. Not only did the Huskers lay the physical foundation for an elementary school they also spent time teaching and interacting with the children while showing them how to “throw the bones” to support the Nebraska Blackshirts.

Right: The Husker student-athletes on the No Filter Service Trip to Panama used their teamwork and leadership skills to help build an elementary school for the students of Bocas del Toro. They also had time to build muscles through hard work, like women’s tennis star Katerina Matysova, football player Pernell Jefferson and swimmer Jordan Ehly.

In May of 2018, Nebraska Life Skills made its fourth No Filter Service Trip Abroad, journeying to Bocas del Toro, Panama. The 21 Husker student-athletes who made the trip were (back row from left) Emily Gillman, Katerina Matysova, Allie Havers, Lotte Sjulin, Freedom Akinmoladun, Daniel Leal, Bo Kitrell; (middle row from left) Raquel Orozco, Kyle King, Alexis Rienks, Amanda Hilton, Danielle Breen, Haley Thiele, Dustin Williams, Jordan Ehly; (front row from left) Katt Sickle, Paula Del Cueto Castillo, Brian Peska, Hannah Virga, Erin Oeltjen and Pernell Jefferson.
