The Nebraska wrestling team returns two All-Americans and adds world-class newcomers as the Huskers return to the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Followingtop-eightfinishesatlastyear’sNCAAChampionships, juniors Robert Kokesh (174) and James Green (157) will provide the leadership for the Huskers in Head CoachMarkManning’s 14thseason at the helm. “(I see Kokesh and Green) being able to compete foranationaltitle,”Manningsaid.“Wehaveyettobreak through andwin aBig Tentitle.We’vehadguys in thefinals. I seebothof thembeingmorevocalleaders,whichRoberthasalreadyshown.” Asateam,Nebraskafinished13thattheNCAAChampionships, with seven Huskers qualifying for the tournament. Kokesh capped a 38-4 campaignwith a third-placefinish,whileGreennotchedhissecondconsecutiveseventh-placefinish. Junior Jake Sueflohn came up onewin shy ofAll-America honors following a 24-7 season and will compete with freshman Destin McCauley for thestartingspotat149poundsthisseason. “I think (the competition) is good,” Manningsaid.“WehavetwoguysthatcanwinatthehighestlevelwithDestinMcCauleyandJakeSueflohn.Thegoodthing is theystillhavearedshirtyear.We’regoingtoseewhobattlesitoutthere.” McCauley has experienced success on the national and world stage, spending the last twoyears at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,Colo.McCauley,aJuniorNationalFreestylechampion and Junior World Team member, wonfive individual state titles in Minnesota at AppleValley High School. Pat Downey (184), Anthony Abidin (133/141),EricMontoya(133)andColtonMcCrystal(133)arealso among the newcomers who could make an immediate impact for the Huskers. Downey, a freshman, spent the last two years at the Olympic Training Center and won the three mostprestigiousnational tournaments inadditionto earning the silver medal at the 2012 FILA Junior WorldChampionships.Downeywill competewithtwoofNU’stopredshirtsfrom2012-13,TJDudleyandAaronStudebaker,forthestartingspotat184pounds. Abidin,Montoya andMcCrystal will battle forthestartingspotsat133and141pounds.Abidin,asophomore,wontheNJCAAnationaltitleat133

pounds at Nassau Community College last season. Montoya, a sophomore, qualified for the NCAAChampionships at 125 pounds last season for Campbell University. McCrystal, a freshman, won back-to-backstatetitlesatSergeantBluff-Luton inIowatofinishhishighschoolcareer. 2013NCAAqualifiers AustinWilson (165) andCaleb Kolb (197) return for the Huskers and willcompeteintheirrespectiveweightclassesfortimein the NU lineup. Wilson, a sophomore, won 27 matches lastseason and will battle redshirt freshman MicahBarnesforthestartingspotat165pounds. Kolb,asenior,managed17winsin2012-13andwill compete against junior Spencer Johnson for thestartingspotat197pounds.Johnsonwrestledat heavyweight last season, compiling a 4-4 dual record. Senior ShawnNagel appeared in 16duals lastseason and will compete with redshirt freshman Tim Lambert at 125 pounds. Nagel notched 16victorieslastseasonat133pounds,whileLambertputtogethera19-3recordasaredshirt. Redshirt freshman Collin Jensen is expected to start at heavyweight for the Huskers following a 22-9redshirtseason. “I’d say a number of guys made strides,”Manning said. “Up and down the board. And we neededto.Ourguysneededto.” The Huskers open the 2013-14 campaign atthe Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Nov.3 in Brookings, S.D. Nebraskawill host its annualWrestle-Offs on Nov. 8 at the newly renovatedDevaney Center as part of the Fall Coaches Clinic. On Nov. 17, the Huskers make their return to the Devaney Center after competing at the NUColiseum over the last decade. The 7,907-seatvenuewillplayhosttoNebraska’smatchupwithBigTen foe Northwestern at 1 p.m. The following weekend, on Nov. 24, Nebraska returns to Brookings, S.D., for a dual against South Dakota State at 2 p.m. Last season the Huskers defeatedtheJackrabbits,32-7inLincoln,Neb.
