    This year marks the final stage of our development of a five-year strategicplan for the College of Business Administration. The plan outlines our vision,mission, goals, objectives and action items to transform the College and cre-ate a future that will benefit all of its stakeholders.

    I am very pleased and grateful for the large response to the 2000 Alumni sur-vey sent out as part of the strategic planning process. The data will be mosthelpful as we continue our plan.

    The theme of this inaugural issue of the College of Business AdministrationAlumni Magazine reflects the many strengths and the goals of our programs.The College has been in close contact with the business community to pro-vide the best opportunities for our students. The articles we have chosen forthis issue reflect our commitment to producing the best graduates. The J.D.Edwards Honors Program highlights our commitment to technology in busi-ness education. Our Study Abroad Programs provide an understanding of theworld that is critical to any student wanting to start a career in business. OurCenter for Entrepreneurship is featured in this issue and is one of the bestprograms in the United States. We are grateful for the support we receivefrom our Alumni Association. The Awards Luncheon is one of the highlightsof my year. It is always rewarding to read of the accomplishments of ouralumni, faculty and students. We are proud of the education we provide andour service to the community

    Arriving at Warren Buffetts office early on a Tuesday

    morning, Warren greeted me at the door. He was look-

    ing forward to the opportunity to discuss the College

    of Business Administration. As we toured his office, he

    chuckled when he recalled a puzzling income item of $4.00 on his

    latest tax return. With his usual thorough research, discovered it

    was a royalty payment for his appearance on All My Children.

    A framed collage on his office wall documents his appearance on

    the soap opera, along with the check stub, which records the pay-

    ment for the appearance, $55,000 plus a $10.00 wardrobe

    allowance. His family tells him that is enough wardrobe allowance

    to last several years.

    Other memorabilia that adorns his office are the original stock

    certificates signed by Wells and Fargo for American Express and

    the Wells Fargo Company. Along with those documents is a bank

    charter signed by Fargo. He also keeps two Coke machines and

    various other souvenirs, representing his businesses, such as a

    giant Dairy Queen ice cream sundae.

    Cynthia: Talk about your Nebraska ties. Your parents were at the University,werent they?Warren: My great-grandfather started a grocery business in 1869 in Omaha. Allof their children attended the University of Nebraska. When my father was at theUniversity, he was the editor of The Daily Nebraskan. My mother was the grand-daughter of the owner of the Cuming County Democrat in Westpoint, Nebraska. Mymother could run a linotype when she was twelve; she used to interview people

    waiting for the train, just to have something to write about in the paper. When shewent to the University, she naturally went to the Daily Nebraskan looking for a job,where she met my father.

    Cynthia: What do you remember about your education at the University?Warren: I had a great experience at Nebraska. Probably the best teacher I had wasRay Dein in accounting. I think everybody in business school should really knowaccounting; it is the language of business. If you are not comfortable with the lan-guage, you can t be comfortable in the country. You just have to get it into yourspinal cord. It is so valuable in business.

    Cynthia: You began you university education at another institution, what are youthoughts on the education you received at the University of Nebraska?Warren: The best year of my undergraduate work was at Nebraska; I would call itmy best overall experience except for the year at Columbia, where I studied withBen Graham. The teachers at the University turned me on. There wasnt a class thatdisappointed me. I was close to my professors, who actually taught the classes, Atmy previous undergraduate college, graduate students taught the classes.

    One of the best things that happened was the day the University was going toaward the Nathan Gold Scholarship, a $500 scholarship to attend graduate schoolanywhere in the U.S. As it turned out, I was the only applicant that showed up forthe interview. So I won the scholarship by default. My dad wanted me to apply toHarvard Business School. It was a 10-hour train ride to Chicago where I met withthe person who was to interview me, and was told to come back another time when Iwas older. I was 19 at the time. So I rode 10 hours back, wondering what I was

    going to tell my Dad. In August of that year I was leafing through magazines anddiscovered that Ben Graham was teaching at Columbia, so I contacted the Dean atColumbia and even though it was very late to apply, was accepted.

    Cynthia: Are you a goal oriented person? When you were in college did you setgoals for yourself?Warren: I have always liked business and wanted to be in business. This is myledger from 1950, when I was at the University of Nebraska. It shows the investmentin my golf ball business. I had $44 cash and half interest in a car. I also had a bro-kerage account, but had to buy stocks in my sisters name because I was underage.

    Cynthia: Your goals were financial then?Warren: Business, I like the process of business. Money is a way to be inbusiness, but the real fun is the activity itself.

    Cynthia: When you are looking at a business in which to invest, what are yourpriorities? Warren: You have to really understand the economics of a business and the kindof people you are getting into business with. They have to love their business. Theyhave to feel that they have been creative, that it is their painting, I am not going todisturb it, just give them more canvas and more brushes, but its their painting, fromour standpoint any way. The whole place will reflect the attitude of the person at thetop, if you have someone at the top who doesnt care, the people down below wontcare. On the other hand, if you have someone at the top who cares a great deal, thatwill be evident across the organization.

    Cynthia: The type of people managing the business is a very important criteria,then?Warren: Yes, contracts dont protect you; you have to have confidence in the peo-ple.

    Cynthia: We are making a big investment in ethics and leadership. We just hired anationally known scholar in leadership to head our Center for Advanced LeadershipStudies. We are searching for a faculty member with a reputation in the field of ethi-cal leadership to work with our Center of Ethics and our Center for Leadership.Obviously, we see a need for our graduates to develop leadership skills and be awareof ethical issues in business. What is your opinion on the need for those enteringbusiness careers to have leadership skills and developed ethical values?Warren: The best ethical leadership people receive is from their parents. Every kidwants heroes, and they may pick the wrong ones. The natural heroes are the parents.Kids usually emulate their parents, and if the parents behave well, the kids are very,very likely to behave well.

    I think that what you do at school by emphasizing ethical values is that youwill keep those kids on track and pull in a few that arent.

    The younger you are when your start learning,the better. Anyone who understands compoundinterest can understand that.

    Cynthia: What about the value of good leadership skills and ethics in business?Warren: I have seen plenty of people succeed that dont have either one. And Ihave also seen an awful lot of people succeed that do; and those are the ones Iadmire and they are the ones I want to associate with. Honesty is a terrific policy.What do you look back on in terms of whether you have been a success? You havecertain things you want to achieve, but if you dont have the love and respect of peo-ple, you are always a failure. That is the one thing you must earn, it can never bebought. No one that has the love and respect of others is ever a failure.

    Cynthia: A donor gave us $1 million to develop an ethics program, and every yearhe asks us if we really think this makes a difference. I agree with you, often the stu-dents come with high ethical standards, but what we are doing is exposing them tosome ethical issues that might trip them up at some point in their career. We wantthem to understand the issues and understand they can influence those around themwith their own standards. Do you agree with that approach?Warren: The simple test of good ethics, is how would you feel about any act, if areasonably intelligent, but unfriendly reporter were to write it up and put it in tomor-rows paper for everyone to see. If it passes that test, its okay, and if you have tothink about it, it probably isnt the right thing to do.

    Cynthia: You talk often about heroes, who are your heroes?Warren: I have been extraordinarily lucky with my heroes, starting with my Dad.I have never been let down by one of my heroes. When I was about 13 or 14, wemoved to Washington. I was all mixed up for a while, I ran away from home, stolethings, but I got through it because I had the right heroes. If you have the wrongones you have a real problem, because you are going to emulate your heroes. Youwill gravitate toward the people you admire. If you dont choosethose people carefully, you will very quickly develop situationalethics that can get you into trouble.

    Cynthia: Lets talk technology. I know that you have said youare not interested in investing in technology companies. Howev-er, we have a strong technology and e-business focus in ourbusiness curriculum, believing that our graduates will be morevaluable to their future employers if they understand the use oftechnology in management, marketing, accounting and finance.What is your opinion of the importance of technology in busi-ness education today? Warren: I love what technology is doing for the world,including me. I dont think it is easy to pick who the technologywinners will be in ten years, like it is with chewing gum or softdrinks. But, that is an investment decision. We are the worldsleaders in technology and it is an engine that will do wondersfor this country over time.

    I like the process of business. Money isa way to be in business, but the real funis the activity itself.

    Economicsshould be part ofeveryones back-ground, becauseit is the way theworld works.

    Cynthia: Our philosophy is that technology is a part of every element in our cur-riculum. We do not have an e-commerce or an e-business major. It should be infusedinto everything; it has changed accounting, it has changed all aspects of business.Warren: Its a tool. For a student to leave business school and not know how tech-nology affects business and a mind to keep up with the progress of technology wouldbe insupportable. Technology is the future of business. It is transforming society. If Iwere starting out in business today, I would be very focused on technology.

    Cynthia: Do you think an MBA is an important degree for students to havetoday?Warren: If you are interested in business, or likely to be in business, an MBA isvery useful. But, what is really important is what you bring to a class in terms ofbeing interested in the subject. If you view a course like accounting as a drudge anda requirement, you are missing the whole game. Any course can be exciting. Master-ing accounting is like mastering a new language, it can be so much fun. The attitudeshould be one of discovery, that you are coming there and discovering. Accountingis the Rosetta Stone of business.

    Economics is fascinating, the first page of economics describes how mankinddeals with insatiable wants and creates the systems to fulfill these wants. Its greatstuff. Really how the world works. Business is a subsection, a fairly understandablesubsection, not like black holes, which are fairly hard to visualize, but business isevery day stuff and you are learning how the world works. You are 18-19 years oldand learning about the world, understanding how this great world works. The GDPper capita in the 20th century increased 6 to 1. Think of that, six times. Why doesthat work here in the U.S., why doesnt it work other places? The U.S. is a smallpart of the universe, but a very important part and understanding that and seeingeverything else against that backdrop for the rest of your life is fabulous.

    Cynthia: What goals do you set for yourself today; do you have goals you stillwant to accomplish?Warren: Berkshire is my canvas. The goal I have is to have Berkshire be general-ly admired for what it is. I am also proud that we do things at Berkshire that are dif-ferent than other corporations. My partner, Charlie Munger, says that Berkshire is adidactic exercise, that it is a teaching platform. We do things differently at Berkshirethan in other business which bring into question the generally accepted ways ofdoing business.

    Cynthia: We have 3200 students in the Business College, just beginning theirpaths to a career. What advice would you give students who are preparing for a busi-ness career?Warren: My advice generally is to sop up everything you can. Youre not goingto run out of storage room in your brain, so take advantage of everything that is ofinterest. You will never have another opportunity like this in your lifetime.

    I ask students what they would do, if when they were sixteen, a genie came to themand told them that they could have the car of their dreams. The only catch is that it isthe only car they will ever have. I know what I would do; I would study the ownersmanual until I had it memorized, and do everything I could to keep the car in thebest shape possible. When you are sixteen, you only have one brain and one bodyand that is all you are ever going to get.

    I think everyonein businessschool shouldreally knowaccounting. It isthe language ofbusiness.It is the RosettaStone forBusiness.

    Cynthia: What advice would you give students who are just starting out in a busi-ness career?Warren: I would say, follow what you are passionate about. I think it is crazy to besomeplace where you feel your ethics or whatever is out of sync with your work.You really want to be in a place where you jump out of bed in the morning and youare all fired up to get to work. I have always felt that way, basically,

    Cynthia: Our students are always interested in knowing what you look for whenyou hire someone? What specific qualities do you seek? Warren: You look for three things, you look for intelligence, you look for energyand you look for integrity. You dont need to be brilliant, just reasonably intelligent,Ray Kroc, for example, has good intelligence, which he combined with good busi-ness principles and passion for business and a passion for his particular business.

    Every business student you have has the requisite intelligence and requisiteenergy. Integrity is not hard wired into your DNA. A student at that age can prettymuch decide what kind a person they are going to be at sixty. If they dont haveintegrity, they never will. The chains of habit are sometimes too heavy to be broken.Students can forge their own chains. Just pick a person to admire and ask why youadmire them, usually it is because they are generous, decent, kind people, and thoseare the kind of people to emulate.

    Cynthia: Thank you for the generous amount of time you have given us today. Iknow that you are a great asset for the College and we appreciate your support.Warren: Thank you for coming.

    In addition to the initial $32.2 mil-lion gift, the potential exists for ongo-

    ing pledged support based on the con-tinued success of the program thatcould provide $4.6 million annuallyafter the fifth year of the project. EdMcVaney had his stamp on the programfrom the start, making sure the moneywas used to reflect his interest in com-

    Partnerships, Collaboration andProgram Integration define theideals of the J.D. EdwardsHonors Program. The goal is to

    create a fully integrated curriculum thatseamlessly weaves solid business edu-cation with practical computer science.The students will gain a full under-standing of how businesses and otherorganizations make fundamental deci-sions, and how computer science canbe harnessed to provide the data thatinforms those decisions.

    Edward and Carole McVaney havewatched their $32.2 million gift to theUniversity of Nebraska grow into theEsther L. Kauffman Academic Residen-tial Center and the J.D. Edwards Hon-ors Program, a project that matches

    puter science and his desire to create atop-notch program with the emphasison the student.

    Business leaders in a range ofindustries say they will welcome thegraduates of the J.D. Edwards HonorsProgram.

    director of IBM Financial Services Sec-tor, Americas. We have to providetechnological support, but also be ableto focus on business problems. Havingpeople who can do both is very impor-tant for developing good solutions.

    Philip Ruhlman, chief informationofficer for Gallup, agrees. Were excit-ed about it because the graduates willbring to industry a well-roundededucational background. They areable to work as project managersfor internal projects and they aresome of the most valuable employ-ees we have.

    The Kauffman Center and theJ.D. Edwards Honors Programare based on an old model ofliving and learning in the

    same community, much the same as theindividual colleges at Oxford Universi-ty. The model provides mentoring,interaction and enhanced communica-tion between the students and the facul-ty. The facility fully integrates livingand instruction, giving the participantsa truly unique scholastic experience.

    Designed to bring together peopleand ideas, everything in the KauffmanCenter was developed to encouragecollaboration and learning. Freshmenand seniors will share living space.

    Many of the design features of the non-residential areas were modeled afterwork environments found at Microsoftand J.D. Edwards and Co. The facilitiesare flexible and include a great hall,which can be modified into a livingarea, a dining area, or a theatre seatingup to 300 people. There are apartmentsand offices for visiting senior fellows.Classrooms have one-button electroniccontrols, and of course, computer net-work ports are everywhere, and forthose who dont want to plug-in, thebuilding has a wireless Ethernet sys-tem.

    The students accepted to the pro-gram are on scholarship, which coversall expenses of the program, includingtuition, room, board, fees and books.

    Edwards Honors Program, he turneddown offers from Harvard, Yale andMIT to enroll at the University ofNebraska. He was one of only twoNebraskans to score a perfect 36 on theACT. He is also a Nebraska RegentsScholar and a member of the all-USAHigh School Second Academic Team inUSA Today.

    Jesse is exactly the type of stu-dent the J.D. Edwards Honors Programis attracting. Laura Antczak, assistantdirector of recruitment for the program,says, These are top students who aregetting offers from many different insti-tutions, and are choosing this programbecause it is unique, because of thescholarship and now because of thebuilding. The program has a focalpoint, a physical and intellectual centerfor the program.

    Jesse is looking forward to movinginto the Kauffman Center in thefall, where he will find a sense ofcommunity with the students in hisclasses in a much smaller and morepersonalized environment. Therewill be 78 undergraduate studentsliving in the Kauffman Center.

    The courses will be taught byteams in a way that providesbackground, then application.For example, one professor

    might provide information on the lawsof supply and demand, while a pro-gramming professor might talk abouthow to design computer applications tosolve a supply and demand problem; thenthe student will create that application.

    Gordon Karels, Interim ProgramDirector and professor of banking andfinance, said the curriculum was devel-oped by adapting a list of existingcourses to meet the programs goals.No new courses were created, so it is

    the way old courses are taught thatmakes the critical difference. It is afront loaded program, with heavycourse loads in the first six semestersand lots of design studio courses in thefourth year.

    The students receive real world,real time experience in the J.D.Edwards design studio course. Theprojects range from developing net-working software for an Italian compa-ny, Flextel, S.P.A., to creating TeamPage, an on-line clearing house ofinformation for families and caregiversof special needs individuals. The Flex-tel project is expected to yield severalUNL and Joint UNL/Flextel patents forvarious technologies. Other projectsinclude developing medical recordssoftware for Lincolns MetaLogic, Inc.,and creating a web based interface to adata network called Association ofAmerican Universities Data Exchange.

    The students receive their diplomasfrom the different colleges supportingthe program, which are the College ofBusiness Administration or the Collegeof Arts & Sciences. Richard Hoffman,Dean of the College of Arts & Sciencessays, The J.D. Edwards Honors pro-gram represents the very best in inter-disciplinary, cross college work. Ittakes advantage of several strengths ofthe university to create something thatis much more than the sum of its parts,but instead is something new and excit-ing. Tomorrows leaders will benefitgreatly from the education they receive.

    out of the program, particularly thosewith the master of engineering or theMBA will fit into two broad categories;software engineers with a solid busi-ness background, and business majorswith a solid base of technical knowl-edge.

    According to Gordon Karels, theMBA students will receive specializedtraining in management systems orientedtoward an information company envi-ronment. These students have a prettystrong technical knowledge base.

    For high school students, a Sum-mer Academy is offered. Thethree week session for up to 50students provides the students a

    chance to earn college credit in com-puter science and business, as well asgain real-world experience completinginformation technology projects. TheSummer Academy requires two collegelevel courses, and to complement theclassroom work, students complete aService Learning Project for a non-profit agency. Working in teams offour, under the guidance of mentors,they develop solutions for projectsranging from creating a database todeveloping an automated Web page.While at the Summer Academy, stu-dents will live in the Kauffman Center.

    Another component of the J.D.Edwards Honors Program, is profes-sional partnerships between graduatestudents and businesses. Students willgain professional, real-world experi-

    ence as interns or employees of a busi-ness that depend on information tech-nology. The program will maintain rela-tionships with local, regional andnational firms, providing students witha valuable network of business contactsand professional opportunities. In addi-tion to these workplace experiences,students will be able to interact fre-quently with guest speakers from thebusiness, government and researchcommunities.

    Businesses can participate onmany levels, including pro-viding a guest speaker or abusiness project for under-

    graduate or graduate students in aDesign Studio course.     Entering the offices of Archri-val in the lower level of theApothecary Building in theHaymarket district of Lincoln

    is a dramatic experience. The beat ofSean Lennon reverberates through theexpanse of old brick walls. Desksshaped like whale tales are suspendedfrom pillars with steel trusses andcables, reminiscent of a whaling ship.The desks are supported by oversizedfishhooks. The office decor is takenfrom themes in the Melville novelMoby Dick. The floor is blue, theaccents are grey. Materials such as con-crete are used to create desks, toremind everyone on the creative teamthat one need not limit ideas to what isexpected. On the right side of the sub-terranean space, several chairs aregrouped around a laptop computer andprojector where presentations can bebrainstormed and later viewed byclients. The center of attention toward

    the back of the room is a glass toppedconference table displaying the manyaward statues Archrival has accumulat-ed in its short life. Charles Hulldesigned the table; invisible posts raisethe glass top above stylized steelmachinery cogs. Truly, the table is awork of art.

    Charles Hull and Clint Rungebegan their entrepreneurialactivities as Juniors in theSchool of Architecture, pro-

    viding freelance graphic design servicesto architectural firms. Together theythought they would gain enough practi-cal experience to, upon graduation,move to California, the cutting edge ofgraphic design. A call from the Centerfor Entrepreneurship changed thecourse of their plans and launched thevery successful strategic design firm.

    In 1996, the director of the Nebras-ka Center for Entrepreneurship calledCharles and Clint to ask them if theywould agree to partner with MBA stu-dent, Linda Hauner, to write a businessplan for the International Business PlanCompetition. Their first thought was, abusiness plan?...We are creative guys.The completed business plan won thirdplace at the UNL competition and thirdplace at the San Diego State competition.

    That experience encouragedCharles and Clint to re-examine theirgoals. Their decision was whether tocontinue on to gradate school in design,

    or develop some funding sources andgain real-time marketable experiences.Since they already had the beginningsof a client base, they chose to run thebusiness for a few years in Lincoln,then decide about a move to California.

    Archrival is a multi-discipli-nary strategic design firmthat specializes in building,refreshing, and extending

    brands. Their unique approach to branddevelopment is a mix of dead-on strate-gy and a fresh creative approach. Theycombine design and advertising in mul-tiple mediums to create a consistentbrand identity for a product or a com-pany. The brand and design elementsare produced in every aspect of a clientcompany, often the design colors andthe logos will be incorporated in theproduct packaging, the stationery, theuniforms, and even in the office dcorand architecture. In fact, the colors usedby Archrivals own promotional materi-al are repeated in the dcor of theiroffice space.

    The company has grown since1997, from three to 17. The team mem-bers come from a variety of back-grounds: architecture, finance, sound

    design, computer technology andgraphic arts. No one has a degree inadvertising. John Batcher, an MBA stu-dent, recently joined the firm as theFinancial Officer and Business Manag-er. Charles, Clint and John like the sizeof the firm as it is now with 17 mem-bers. They believe that hierarchiesdiminish creativity. Charles credits theNebraska Center for Entrepreneurship forgiving them the direction to form anactual company and impressing onthem the importance of havinggood professional advisors.

    The client list is as diverse asthe team members. They arethe Interactive Agency ofRecord for Lowes Home

    Improvement Stores and the LowesHome Safety Council. They helpedbuild Lowes brand identity throughwebsites, interactive games, and onlineadvertising. To promote the HomeSafety Council, a non-profit division ofLowes, Archrival has developed aninteractive site, coderedrover.com,which was named one of the top fivesites for kids by USA Today andYahoo.

    Squeegee, a new entrant in thegas/convenience store market, present-ed them with an opportunity to do acomplete start-up design and brand

    identity campaign. They established thename of the convenience stores, all theprint design and theme material, uni-forms, logo and motto. They wanted adifferent look than any other store, sothey used the interest the owner has in50s memorabilia to create the look forthe stores.

    Goodyear, with one of the bestknown logos in the world, is develop-ing a brand identity for a new product,TensionRite. Goodyear wants thisproduct to be known by its name, andArchrival is developing a campaignusing motion graphics, print and TV toestablish the brand.

    Archrival is currently working withNebraska Book Company to promoteused book sales. Under the logo of gotused they are creating a campaign torun through TV ads, cd-roms (bothcredit card size and standard) and mail-ers to students. Charles says this is anatural for the firm, because everyoneon the design team is the target audi-ence, as the average age of the team

    Many specialized projects areunderway at Archrival. A graphicdesign project involves working withFirst National Bank of Omaha to createcredit card designs for college students.A 3D modeling was just completed forWarner Brothers; developing interactivecoloring books from the two-dimen-sional Pinky and the Brain cartooncharacters.

    Charles is very excited about hisMotion Graphics and Sound Designprojects. Archrival is one of the fewdesign firms that creates the music inhouse, to go with the visual graphics.That allows them to coordinate thevisuals totally in sync with the music.They do work with music that isalready identified with a product orcompany, as they did with the motiongraphics in the Thinking outside theBox video which appears in the J.D.Edwards Honors Program web site.

    They are very competitive andproud of the prizes and awards they

    have won. Winning is not secondary toArchrival, it is primary to their sense ofaccomplishment. Competing and win-ning against the best design firmsacross the U.S. provides the evidencethat a small firm in Lincoln, Nebraskacan produce cutting edge designs. As aresult of their success, they are talkingof expanding, but in an unusual way.The synergy of the small office withcreative teams working on a projectfrom beginning to end is critical. Withthat in mind, expansion plans are inprogress to open similarly sized shopsin different cities across the U.S., withnone having more than twenty teammembers.

    Lincoln has unfurled its manyadvantages to the creative guys atArchrival, and they plan to stay put.Being central in geography gives themthe advantage of not being East Coastor West Coast in style, but either or nei-ther. Judging by the number of nationalprizes awarded to Archrival in justthree years, being central, is a positiveforce. They find that Lincoln offersadvantages in managing the time zonesand it is easy and not too far to travelanywhere in the U.S. Most of all theylike it here.

    In the past three years, at least 25businesses have been launched out ofthe Nebraska Center for Entrepreneur-ship. The variety of new ideas isremarkable, from Kris Browns All-StarKicking Academy to Speidel Roofingto Alexandria 2112 Nightclub to Lin-coln Learning Software. The Centercreates the opportunity for the studentsto develop a business in their particulararea of interest. They provide the cli-mate that nurtures a dream.

    Sell2All, Inc. is the brainchild ofBrandon Dupsky. While gaining hisMBA degree, he focused his education-al experience on developing Sell2Allfrom a home based business to a thriv-ing concern of eight full time employ-ees. In August 2000, he left the com-fortable corporate world with nearly tenyears experience in various aspects oflogistics and operations management todevote all his time and energy to hisfledgling company. Sell2All is in thebusiness of helping other businessessell their merchandise over dynamicallypriced markets that evolved with theadvent of the internet. They focus theirresources in the general areas of help-ing businesses liquidate their surplusassets and helping businesses sell theirmerchandise in new untapped marketssuch as eBay.

    The strength of the Nebraska Cen-ter for Entrepreneurship is that itremains a resource for fledgling compa-nies to seek advice and in turn thosesame people to share their experienceswith students studying in the Center.Stephanie, Charles and Brandon all participated in the last Heartland FreeEnterprise Conference, giving adviceand sharing their own start-up adven-tures with the group.

    The Nebraska Center of Entrepreneurshipwas formed to inspire and enable stu-dents to launch and operate new busi-nesses successfully. Founded in 1986, ithas been rated as one of the top entre-preneurship centers in the United Statesby Success magazine. The UnitedStates Association of Small Businessand Entrepreneurship rated the under-graduate curriculum one of the best inthe country.

    Providing a climate that nurtures adream is the joy of Terry Seboras posi-tion as Director of the Nebraska Centerfor Entrepreneurship. He is the cheer-leader for any student who has everthought of starting a business. Whenasked by anyone if he thinks a particu-lar business plan has merit, his answeris invariably an enthusiastic yes.

    The Center provides classes andcompetition for students across thecampus. It is not a study that can be adeclared major and is not solely forCollege of Business Administration stu-dents. It is a resource for the entireUniversity. The focus of the program isto provide a realistic understanding toeach student of what starting, owningand operating a business requires andwhat it will demand. The Center pro-vides a resource for aspiring businessowners to learn the ins and outs.

    Stephanie Watkins came to thecenter from the Hixson-Lied College ofFine & Performing Arts to fill an elec-tive requirement. She mentioned to

    Terry that she had a dream of openingher own dance studio. His response wasyes, do it today! Stephanie presenteda business plan at the InternationalBusiness Plan Competition and wasthrilled when her proposal won a prize.In January, 2001, Stephanie openedNebraska Dance in Omaha and was aninstant success, currently with morethan 175 students.

    The Center provides many differ-ent competition opportunities for thestudents. The International BusinessPlan Competition attracts students atboth graduate and undergraduate levelsfrom around the world. The competitorswithin the University of Nebraska arethe winners of the Alice Dittman NewVenture Award, which is presented atthe Alice Dittman, Cornhusker BankBusiness Plan Competition. Both com-petitions allow the students to pitchtheir ideas to potential investors. Forthe past four years the Center has alsosponsored an international productivityimprovement competition. It is the onlycompetition of its kind in corporateentrepreneurship, and involves projectsby students that have taken place in on-going businesses. The projects are oftenthe product of engineering designcourses or courses in operations andlogistics.

    Another competition is the Nebras-ka Collegiate Entrepreneur Award,which recognizes undergraduate stu-dents who own or manage their ownbusinesses. In 1999 the winner of theMost Innovative Collegiate Businessaward at the North American CollegiateEntrepreneur Awards was Archrival.(see Archrival story on page 14)

    Many of the recipientswere accompanied by fami-ly and co-workers. Theevent was marked by agenial spirit and some sur-prising bits of information.It was revealed that theholding company for Crete CarrierCorp., LRC, actually stands for last redcent, which is what Phyl Acklie saidthey used to buy the initial truckingcompany.

    The Pan Pacific Tour and Conference isthe largest project for the SIFE stu-dents. In 2001, the Conference washeld in Vina del Mar, Chile. Dr. SangM.Lee, University Eminent Scholar,developed the conference format to

    provide a forum for scholars, execu-tives and government officials fromPacific Rim countries to discuss impor-tant issues relating to a better quality oflife in this region. Emphasis has beenplaced on more effective utilization ofhuman resources, technology and mul-tilateral economic activities across bor-ders.

    During the tour, the students visitedbusinesses, local business assistanceorganizations, and met with local uni-versity students. The program aims tostimulate entrepreneurial thinkingthrough exposure to new cultures andencourage a greater understanding andawareness of the position of SouthAmerica in the world.

    SIFE or Students in FreeEnterprise is the worlds pre-eminent collegiate free enter-prise organization. SIFE pro-

    vides leadership training, regionalexpositions and career opportunity fairsfor thousands of college studentsthroughout 20 countries, and awardsmore than $400,000 in prize money tocollege student teams each year. Thanksto Lisa Leemans award of $10,000 asAmerican Greetings Alumnus of theyear, the UNL SIFE team has a fund onwhich to draw scholarship money forits members.

    The SIFE Board of Directors consistsof more than 170 top corporate execu-tives, who are inspired by the energy,passion and healthy idealism of SIFEstudents. They, in turn, inspire the stu-dents by championing such ideas as,hard work pays, free markets work,democracy leads to prosperity and free-dom brings social responsibility.

    On April 5, 2001 the UNL SIFE stu-dents won their 14th consecutive firstplace regional competition champi-onship in Chicago. Six members ofUNLs dynamic presentation team exe-cuted a 24 minute presentation repre-senting their community involvementthrough the teaching of free enterprise

Both shopswere losing money and market shareuntil the students began managingthem.

    Study abroad is a once in a life-time experience. All College ofBusiness Administration stu-dents are encouraged to take

    advantage of the Study Abroad Pro-gram. After all, business is global and itis an incredible experience to view itfirst hand. Opportunities are almostunlimited with programs in 37 coun-tries and 52 cities.

    Programs range from a few weeks to anentire year, and are taught in English orthe language of the country. Someopportunities are fully sponsored withaccompanying faculty, and others areindependent. Every student experienceis different, and every student gainsfrom the exposure to different cultures.

    Kaycee Sullivan, Nathan Johnson andPatrick Sampson each took advantageof the opportunities offered in StudyAbroad in very different ways.

    What do you want to bewhen you grow up? Ifyou had asked KayceeSullivan that question

    during her high school years, she wouldhave answered, something in Interna-tional Business. Kaycee is a now asenior at the University, majoring inInternational Business and Marketing.

    Kaycee has taken full advantage of themyriad of Study Abroad options offeredby the College. In the summer of 1999,she participated in the Nebraska atOxford program with 76 other UNLstudents. The four-week programinvolves two lecture/tutorial coursesconcerning the British political systemand international economic policy. Lec-turers and tutors for the courses arefrom the Mansfield College faculty andstaff. Field trips and cultural excursionssupplement the course work.

    Oxford University, the oldest universityin the English-speaking world, is com-prised of 35 independent and self-gov-erning colleges, located 57 miles northof London. Mansfield College wasfounded in 1886.

    The year Kaycee went to Oxford hasbecome known throughout the Collegeof Business Administration as the yearof the Great Ketchup Shortage. It

    seems that Mansfield Hall was not fullystocked with American style ketchup,to the dismay of the students. Fish andchips cry for ketchup, not vinegar. Thesituation soon became a study projectin supply and demand issues in aninternational environment, as well as apractical study on the barter system.

    The following spring Kaycee participat-ed in the Pan Pacific Tour and Confer-ence, sponsored by the ManagementDepartment and the Nebraska Centerfor Entrepreneurship. While in Mel-bourne, the group visited Monash Uni-versity. They spent the day attending amarketing class and at a social eventsponsored by the University.

    Fosters Brewery invited the Pan Pacif-ic group to a one-hour presentation bytheir marketing director who explainedthe process of developing a marketingcampaign for the Olympics. Everyone,students and professors alike, agreedthat it was an invaluable lesson.

    In Brisbane the group attended businessclasses at Griffith University. Ironically,during the same time, a group of Grif-fith students were at the College ofBusiness in Lincoln, making a visit andpresentation to the SIFE group.

    Spring of 2002 will find Kaycee partic-ipating in Semester-at-Sea, which issponsored by the University of Pitts-burgh. The ship will start from theBahamas, and travel around the world.While on board they will study the cul-

    tural economies of each country.Kaycee will be working on a UCAREresearch project with Dr. Ron Hampton,Marketing Professor at UNL. The proj-ect will study International marketingstrategies for lotteries. The study willevaluate the effectiveness of the mar-keting strategy within each culture,based on the money spent on the lot-tery, per capita.

    Kaycee says,Studying abroadshifts ones focusfrom thinking thatthe U.S. is the cen-ter of the world, andfrom the concept ofseeing all theworlds issues onlyas they effect the U.S.She appreciates that eachcountry in the world hasits own perspective thatis not necessarily that ofthe U.S.

    She collects a Coke canfrom each country shevisits, and finds the mar-keting lesson involvedintriguing. Each countyhas its own version ofthe Coke can, with dif-ferent measuring sys-tems, languages and sizeof can, but it is immediately recogniza-ble as Coke.

    In the fall of 1996, Nathan Johnson(2001) surprised his parents byannouncing he would not be at theUniversity of Nebraska for fall

    semester, but would instead be attend-ing Senshu University in KawasakiCity, Japan. Something about Japan fas-cinated the sophomore student. Perhapsit was the contact he had with studentsfrom Japan who were attending theUniversity. Nathan is not really sure

    what initially attracted him, but it wasthe time of his life.

    Before departing for Japan, the groupof about ten students participated in anorientation pro-gram. Theyviewed videoabout Japan,

    talked to students who had studied atSenshu in past years and were givenpractical advice for living in Japan. Thesponsoring faculty member, Dr. ScottFuess accompanied the group to Japanand remained with them for about aweek. No other university group atSenshu had such a thorough prepara-tion.

    At Senshu University, Nathan shared aroom with three other students. All ofthe University of Nebraska studentswere on the same floor, but not sharingthe same rooms. The other students in

    the dorm were from all over the globe.The room had stacked beds, lined withtatami mats built into the walls. Atnight the students would unroll theirfutons to sleep. Each one had his own

    desk, much like anAmerican dorm. Nomeals were served, butthe building did have akitchen facility where thestudents could preparemeals. Occasionally, astudent would host aparty and cook food fromhis native country, whichwas a considerable treat,as well as a way to learnabout the various cul-tures.

    Nathan studied managementand economics at Senshu,which, he said, he has incorpo-rated into his current positionas General Manager of Arm-strong Furniture. The manage-ment theory of developing aconsensus, training by exampleand saving face is attractive tothe relaxed, low key Nathan.However, he says, its hard toput in place in the UnitedStates, where people are morestraight forward and less ableto pick up on the nuances of asituation.

    The highlight of Nathans stay at Sen-shu was his relationship with his hostfamily. By some odd circumstance, hishost father is in the furniture businessin Japan. He supplies furniture to com-mercial sites such as hotels, restaurantsand bars. Currently, the two are lookingat ways to work together to connecttheir businesses.

    In the fall of 1998, Nathan headed toJapan again, this time to Nanzan Uni-versity in Nagoya. He lived with a hostfamily in the countryside; about an

    hour commute by train to the school.His host mother was a Junior HighSchool English teacher, and an after-school tutor. His host father was aphysical education teacher and coach.Nathan was a little disconcerted at liv-ing so far from his school, but he soonadapted to the commute and enjoyedbeing in the country as a break from thehectic pace of a Japanese city.

    When asked how the experiences hehad in Japan had influenced his life,Nathan responded, Any experiencethat one has is always with them, andone draws on that experience, oftenwithout ever realizing it.

    For Patrick Sampson, a summerprogram in Italy opened hiseyes and his mind to a world ofnew experiences. Patrick con-

After graduationfrom the University of Nebraska inAugust he joined the Department ofDefense in Arlington, Virginia as anaccountant.

    The summer undergraduate program isheld on the campus of a private highschool in Paderno del Grappa, about 45minutes north of Venice. American pro-fessors are recruited to teach the sum-mer session in the areas of internationalaccounting and international finance.The schedule is accommodating enoughthat the students can travel around Italyon the weekends.

    As an amateur photographer, Patrickwas surrounded with wonderful photoopportunities on his weekend trips. Thefirst opportunity was a visit to Rome. Itwas one of the Sundays that Pope JohnPaul II was celebrating mass at the Vat-ican. He found it amusing that the Vati-

    can has Pope Vision, just as theHuskers have Husker Vision.

    Patrick, as most other study abroad stu-dents, was surprised to find Americanpop culture in ancient venues. He reallyenjoyed the Pearl Jam concert held inthe coliseum at Verona, and visiting theHard Rock Cafs in Rome, Venice andVerona.

    In the spring of 2001, Patrick joined thePan Pacific Tour,sponsored by theNebraska Centerfor Entrepreneur-ship. The studentstraveled with fac-ulty and staffmembers fromthe managementdepartment toBrazil and Chile.

    The first stop was two-hour boat rideup the Rio Negro, a tributary of theAmazon to the rain forest. They stayedin a hotel, but visited a native village,which was not too far away. Monkeysran wild, all the buildings were onstilts, and the Rio Negro was a darkcoffee color. Another excursion waspiranha fishing on the Amazon. Laterthe hotel served them piranha soup.

    After a few days in Salvador the firstvillage settled by the Portuguese, thestudents spent a week in Brazil. Thestudents attended a soccer game in thebiggest stadium in the world. They vis-ited FIRJAN, the Federation of Indus-try in Rio de Janeiro. It is a group dedi-cated to encouraging economic devel-opment in Rio. They provide incubatortype support for new, small businessesincluding funding and advice. Themajor industry in Rio is tourism.

    Patrick thought the street peddlersneeded no help in marketing tech-niques. They think every opportunity

    is a closed sale, its just a matter ofcompromising on the price.

    The closing days of the Pan Pacific tourwere in Vinia del Mar, Chile, at the PanPacific Conference. The College of Busi-ness Administration and the Managementdepartment sponsor the Conference.Many of the faculty members were inattendance and participating in theforums. The students attended sympo-siums on educational attitudes, marketingand import/export decision variables.

    Cliff Hillegass passed away on May6, 2001. He was best known for his yel-low and black study guides, CliffsNotes. Inducted into the College ofBusiness Administration Hall of Famein 1993, Cliff was recognized for hiscreation and development of a success-ful Nebraska business. Cliff and hiswife, Mary, generously contributed inmany ways to the Lincoln communityin art, education and health care. Aswitness to their spirit of giving, manycommunity assets are named in theirhonor, including the outpatient wing atMadonna Rehabilitation Hospital and asculpture garden in Kearney. He alsocreated an endowed professorship at theUNL English Department. Cliff was notonly a generous man, but a kind one;and was known by the little girl wholived across the street as the nice manwho gives me roses for my mommy.Of course, he removed the thorns first.

    The Nebraska Bankers Associationrecently honored Andrew C.Skip Hove,BSBA, 1956, witha Lifetime of Suc-cess award. Hoverecently retired asvice chairman ofthe FDIC and is apast President ofNBA. On hand topresent the awardwas Senator Chuck Hagel, whoremarked that Skip was able to crosslines of political philosophies, whichmade him effective in keeping theFDIC together. Skip did one of the

    most remarkable jobs Washington hasever seen. Skip Hove is now on thefaculty of the UNL College of BusinessAdministration and Director of theCenter for the Study of Financial Ser-vices.Marc LeBaron has been electedPresident of the Lincoln Chamber ofCommerce. The June 1, 2001 issue ofMidlands Business Journal featuredMarc and the expansion of Lincoln

    Plating Compa-ny. LPC is creat-ing a new divi-sion, IntegratedFinishing Ser-vices, to providetotal inventorymanagement ofproducts with ahigh degree of

    cosmetic finish or engineering require-ments. To help fill the employmentrequirements of the new division, Marchas contracted with Community Alter-natives, a service that gives assistancein job placement to developmentallydisabled people.

    Carl Witte, Ph.D. 1997, has recentlybeen elected to the board of Directorsof Liberty Bank in Chicago. The bankhas been serving customers throughoutthe Chicago area for over one hundredyears. Dr. Witte is currently a facultymember in the College of BusinessAdministration at Roosevelt Universityin Chicago.

    Roger T. Larson, BSBA 1949, hasbeen honored as the first recipient of

    the Roger T. Larson Lincoln Communi-ty Builder Award, presented by the Lin-coln Community Foundation. Theaward will be presented on a nonsched-uled basis to recognize people orgroups who have made significant con-tributions to the growth and quality oflife in Lincoln. Larson says, I believewe need to encourage community serv-ice and civic affairs. The award is dis-played in the atrium of the Wells FargoBuilding in downtown Lincoln.

    Lisa Leemans, MBA 1992, wasawarded the Sam M. Walton Alumae ofthe Year Award sponsored by American

    Leemans Scholarships for studentsinvolved in SIFE and the remaining$5,000 has been invested to fund futurescholarships.

    Lisa is now the Director of Interna-tional sourcing at Manco, Inc.

    Jim Moore, BSBA, 1960, and hiswife were honored last year by theOmaha Salvation Army for elevenyears of volunteer work including assis-tance with a new $11.5 million adultdrug and alcohol rehabilitation center.Jim is a past president of Ak-Sar-Benand chairman of the Douglas CountyFair Board.

    Professor Bruce Avolio of Bing-hamton University, State University ofNew York, joined our faculty as theDonald and Shirley Clifton Chair inLeadership. Dr. Avolio is one of the

    The School of Accountancy introducesa new Assistant Professor, AngelaWoodland. She holds a B.S., Ph.D.and CPA and hasworked as an audi-tor for PriceWater-houseCoopers.Angela has taughtauditing, comput-er-based data sys-tems, accountinginformation sys-tems and introduc-tory cost accounting. Angelas researchinterests are in the areas of auditing andcapital markets.

    Debra Cosgrove has joined theSchool of Accountancy faculty as a Lec-turer. Her recent professional experiencesinclude controller and vice-president offinance for Lortz Direct Marketing, Inc.,and senior tax consultant with ArthurAndersen LLP. She holds a B.S. andM.P.A. from UNL.

    Silvana Trimi (Ph.D. 2001) hasjoined the Management Department asAssociate Professor. She received aB.A. from the University of Tirana andholds a M.A. and Ph.D. from UNL. Sil-

    vana s researchinterests are in theareas of manage-ment informationsystems, businessdata communica-tion, data basemanagement,sys-tems analysis anddisign, e-engineer-ing, and e-business.

    Orn Bodvarsson is with the Collegefor two years as a visiting professor inEconomics from the St. Cloud State Uni-versity, St. Cloud, Minnesota.

    The Melvin W. Jones MemorialGolf Tournament was held June 29,2001, to benefit the Melvin W. JonesLeadership Fund. The endowed fundwas created at the University ofNebraska Foundation by friends andfamily of Melvin. The fund is a testi-mony of his guiding principles; eachone, teach one, and to lift as youclimb. Thirty one golfers participatedfrom around the country, includingMelvins brother, Benjamin fromAtlanta. There were over 20 hole spon-sors and non-golfing contributors repre-senting individuals, corporations andlocal businesses.

    Greichaly Cepero was named theBig 12 Conference female athlete of theyear. She is the first female winner from aschool other than the University of Texas.The winner is selected by a panel of ath-letic administrators and media members.

    Greichaly is also the youngest everathlete to win the Frederic Ware MemorialAward. She is only the second volleyballplayer to win.

    The Ware Award is presented by theeditors of the Omaha World Herald to thefour-year college athlete in Nebraska whomake the most significant achievement insports while representing the best tradi-tions of his or her institution.

    Grecha had some very tough compe-tition for the award this year. Finalistswere Kyle Vanden Bosch (Finance)and Shane Komine.

    The Junior International BusinessMajor is a remarkable young woman. Grecha is also a starting forward for CoachSanderfords basketball team, and he cant wait for her to turn her full attention tobasketball in two years. The native of Puerto Rico was recruited by Nebraska for arare two sport combination of basketball and volleyball. She is an Academic All-Big12 in both sports with a 3.45 GPA .

    She has been recruited by the U.S. National Team in Volleyball, but thinks 2008is to far ahead of her to devote her entire summers to train. Grecha says, This is justpart of my journey, I know there is a lot more to come.

    Jenny Arbaugh, International Busi-ness, received a $5,000 scholarship fromFremann Asia, (associated with the UnitedNations) to study in Japan. She will attendSenshu University for fall semester and willbe the new Senshu Coordinator in the spring.Jenny is a learning community student and astudent ambassador in the UndergraduateAdvising office.

    John Sypal, received the ExemplaryService to International Students Award atthe reception for graduating international stu-dents at the Wick Alumni Center. The Awardis presented by the Dean of InternationalAffairs in conjunction with the NebraskaAlumni Association. This award honors thestudent who has been of exceptional assis-tance to international students and showsleadership qualities in such efforts

    Brett Stuart was a representative ofthe Agribusiness MBA Program onGovernor Johanns Trade Mission toAsia last fall. Think Global, Act Local,took on new meaning, as Brett studiednew market entry approaches forNebraska Corn Fed Beef.

    This fall, Lucia Bond will representthe Agribusiness MBA program on theGovernors Trade Mission to Brazil andChile.

    Dusty Clevenger presented hisresearch paper Adoption of e-com-merce by Nebraska Agricultural Retail-ers to the International Food and Agri-culture Association in Sydney, Australialast June.

    Many new internship opportunities areopening for MBA students. SallyLeifert MBA, 1993, is the coordinatorfor developing internship partners. Sheis working for both the MBA programand the J.D. Edwards Honors program.

    Tami Greer, completed a summerinternship at Intel in Scottsdale, AZ.She was part of a team in an IntelInvolved community activity, workingat a library. This fall Tami will be Pres-ident of the MBA Student Association,as well as a graduate assistant for theJ.D. Edwards Initiative.
