No.5 2nd April, 2015

Happy Holidays everyone. Students return on Tuesday, 21st April, 2015.

Principals Report

It is with mixed feelings we farewell Mrs Fin this term. She has taken up an opportunity to relieve as Assistant Principal at Boorowa for the remainder of this year. We are happy she has this opportunity but sad to see her go. At this stage we are unsure of her replacement but I will be working on that throughout the holidays. Mr Cox will be teaching 5/6F at the start of the term until we have a new appointment for the class.

We also wish Mrs McRae all the best as she heads off on maternity leave. Mrs Donna Barton will be taking over 3/4M in term 2, 3 & 4. Mrs Barton has also done a few days on that class last week so the children are familiar with her.

I would like to thank Mrs Hickey for her organisation leading up to and including the Cross Country Carnival. It was a great morning, the students and teachers had a wonderful time. Thank you to so many parents for giving up their time to help out and stay on for presentations. Thank you also to the P&C for the kind donation of our new school Cross Country Perpetual trophies. Students will receive notes this week if they have been selected to go to district. Congratulations to all students who had a go and those who were awarded medals and ribbons.

I hope all families have a safe and happy Easter holiday. I will be taking three days leave before the holidays to go home and look after my mum. Please contact the school if you have any questions. I will be back next term. Teachers will return on Monday 20th April for some training and students will return on Tuesday 21st April. Enjoy the holidays!! Kind regards Michelle Fahey Principal Newsletter Our fortnightly newsletter is available on our Website at www.yass-p.schools.nsw.edu.au and is emailed to all our students and families who have requested an emailed copy.

SRC Fundraiser The SRC would like to thank all school community for donating so generously to our epilepsy fund raising event yesterday, which raised $260. The students clearly have a range of future career options, everything from race car drivers to rock stars and scientists. We weren’t too sure if the scientists were evil or just plain mad but we managed to contain their enthusiasm for “big bangs” and smelly potions.

Parent Information Session On Thursday evening Infants staff met with over 30 parents for an information session on the programs and initiatives that are implemented at Yass Public School. Parents gained further information about our literacy, spelling and numeracy programs and were able to ask any questions. It was a great opportunity for staff to discuss why we have chosen the programs such as L3 (Language Learning and Literacy.) Spelling Mastery and TEN (Targeted Early Numeracy) It was fantastic to share the positive results from these programs and it was nice to receive such positive feedback from parents. Thanks again to all those who attended.

Primary Information Session

Thank you to parents that attended last Thursday’s primary information evening. It was great to get some ideas and feedback from parents about the programs we are running at our school.

Kinder Buddy Program During term 1, we have continued the Kinder/Year 6 buddy program. Every fortnight, our Year 6 students go across to their buddies and help them with various activities. They have completed activities such as peer reading, drawing, writing, and arts. As we have had so much success with this program, we have decided to continue our buddy program throughout the year. Movie Afternoon We hope the students that attended this afternoon’s movie enjoyed the

experience. Teachers were very pleased with the number of students that completed and returned homework this term. We will start afresh next term!!

District Cross Country District cross country will be held in Gunning on 29th April, 2015. A note will be sent home first week with further details.

Cross Country Last Friday our students ran in the school cross country. It was great to have the carnival in the morning when it is a little cooler. All students put in their best effort and a great big thanks goes to everyone who helped on the day. Well done to

those students who will represent our school at the district carnival on the 29th of April in Gunning. Our champions and runner ups this year were awarded with a medal and a perpetual trophy that will stay at the school as a tribute to the students efforts.

ANZAC Day School Service We are planning our ANZAC Service at school for Friday 24 April 2015. We

have student leaders preparing for the event. Students will be doing activities within their class leading up to ANZAC day. We would like to welcome parents, friends and community members for our service at school. We will gather on the asphalt near the flagpoles at 11.30am on Friday. Our students have also designed

two original artworks inspired by the ANZAC theme. Thanks to Mrs Fin and Ms Bird for their planning for the day.

ANZAC Day Town Service

The children are to meet YPS staff at the corner down from the back of Aldi’s at 10.45 am ready to march at 11 am. They will be required to wear their full school uniform and a hat. Depending on the weather a blue school jumper can also be worn. As the weather is sometimes quite warm parents are reminded to bring a bottle of water as it might be needed at the end of the marching. Cheryl Dentrinos

1-2’S Visit the Yass District Museum.

Excursion to the Museum by Isabelle Philips.

On Monday we went to the Yass and District Museum. Then we went to Coronation Park. At the museum we saw an old fashioned pantry. It was pink and faded and had lots of different size drawers. They were all labelled with different types of food. The pantry would spin around so you could get to all the different drawers. When we were going back I saw a leaf fossil.

No one else seemed interested in it. I know that the fossil could contain the most vital evidence about plants. I also saw a crown. It was absolutely covered with gold, rubies and diamonds. I remember that there was a flower jewel with a black centre and red petals down the bottom. When we went to Coronation Park I played with Seth. We pretended that there was a gigantic snake trying to kill us. Seth and I played on top of the giant slide. We used the slide as an evacuation shoot. I liked the museum especially because it was all Yass History.

The Excursion by Tobey Smith 1/2 R

On Monday we went to the Yass and District Museum for an excursion. All of 1 2 D, 1 2 R and 1 2 M went to the museum. Along the way I saw two ducks, some zooming cars and zooming trucks. I saw my brothers Cub hall and I saw my Grandpa. I high fived him on the way.

When we got there we split into groups, my group went to the playground and the other group went to the museum. When my group went to the park I played hide and seek and battle of Slug Terra . I was Eli and I was chasing Isaac because he was the bad guy. Then I went on the monkey bars three times. I went on the big slide but I kept stopping a few times because I am a very big person. When my group went to the museum I saw an army sword, a telescope, a king’s crown and lots of really old stuff. We saw photos of old buildings, and streets and an old bell.

All the 1/2s were playing in the playground. On the way back we saw a long neck turtle. I felt amazed by everything that we saw at the Museum.
