III. Chapter Activities Our activities mostly centered around small informal meetings with our members. In these meetings we review and discuss key publications related to our interests in Optics and Photonics, as well as present and discuss our own research. We also approach other important aspects of our career development including technical writing, presentation skills, etc.
• Science House Program: Photonics Leaders II (Summer, 2010) Photonics Leaders II is a two-‐year science and information technology program for rising tenth and eleventh grade students from across North Carolina. Students study the physics of light and its technology applications. In the course of this year round program, students participate in 340 hours of investigations, instruction, virtual meetings and internships focused on electronics, mathematics, optics, and laser technology. The resources of The Science House at North Carolina State University and the Research Triangle Park area are leveraged to provide access to leading edge researchers and experiences. • Special Awards judging to select winners for SPIE's Optics and Photonics Science Fair Awards (May, 2011)
Our chapter member served as a Special Awards judge to select winners for SPIE's Optics and Photonics Science Fair Awards at the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair. SPIE awarded three cash prizes for projects best demonstrating scientific research and engineering applications of optical, photonic, imaging, and optoelectronic technologies. SPIE Optics and Photonics Science Fair Award http://www.ncsciencefair.org/students/awards.html IV. Planned Activities For the next academic year we have planned the following specific activities. (1) Organize a technical seminar on a topic related to Optics and Photonics from one of the professors in our department or an industry representative (2) Continue our informal research presentations and literature discussions (3) Design and maintain a chapter website (4) Design a chapter T-‐shirt One of our main goals as a chapter is to bring together all of the students and professors working in optics and photonics from around the university. Here at NC State, there is optics and photonics research taking place in several departments (Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc). We would like to serve as a forum for students and professors from all of the different departments to be able to network, share, and discuss their research interests. V. Financial Information We have not yet required a budget so we have not requested or raised any funds this past year.
