driving much of operations, local governments balance agency
priorities, safety and security, and the current political
environment. Share best practices that support your jurisdiction’s
goals and satisfy the current political environment.
TBA
Education Funding Strategies
(Tonya Walton, Orange County)
Public school funding remains a sensitive topic in most
jurisdictions. Although local governments provide only 24% of
education revenue, the decision-making process receives greater
scrutiny and community involvement than state or federal
funding. This roundtable will explore strategies NC local
governments use to finance school operating expenses. As
participants share experiences, the group can assess conditions
necessary to realize potential for fiscal and political gains.
TBA
Popular Annual Financial Reporting
(Kathryn Hertel, City of Raleigh)
Not many citizens would consider the CAFR an easy beach read.
Communities are increasingly turning to Popular Annual Financial
Reports to provide transparent financial data to their residents.
Examine PAFR examples (good and bad) and discuss ways to
make financial and budgeting information fun and interesting.
TBA
Dealing Realistically with Unrealistic Expectations
(Jorge Figueroa, Ph.D, UNC-Wilmington)
Stress produces illnesses, diminishes immune function, reduces
quality of life, and shortens life expectancy. Yet, stress is
unavoidable. It is not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it.
The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one
thought over another. Identify strategies to minimize adverse
effects of stress in your life and improve effectiveness at dealing
with stress productively.
