Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan have embraced the centenary celebrations of the 1916 Rising in a most enthusiastic way. To mark the commemoration, they had former student, Sinead Hunt , officer in the army, read aloud the Proclamation to the entire student population of 1200. The history students in Loreto created a spec- tacular exhibition, which is on display in the atrium of the new school building. In this exhibi- tion, artistic works and projects commemorating the events of the Rising were put on display. These include newspaper cuttings from 100 years ago. Practically all groups are given an airing, including the 40 children who were killed in the Rising. Graphic accounts of how these children lost their lives in the conflict are partic- ularly poignant. A special emphasis was placed on the women of the Rising and the important role they played. Throughout the week senior history students were brought on various history trips, which included Glasnevin Cemetery, Collins Barracks and a 1916 walking tour of Dublin. All of the students thoroughly enjoyed this. Special guest speakers arrived at the school last week, including former Taoiseach, John Bruton and Fianna Fail TD, Éamon Ó Cuív. John Bruton gave an excellent perspective in relation to the Rising. His talk was certainly thought provoking and informative and the students found it truly beneficial. Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív also addressed the students on Friday last, where he gave his insight into the Rising. He was particularly impressed with the wonderful work the students did in putting the exhibition together. Deputy Ó Cuív has very strong connections to Balbriggan. His grandmother, Sinead Bean De Valera was born in Balbriggan. The students found the talk engaging and very enlightening. He spoke to the County Leader prior to addressing the students, regarding his early memories of Balbriggan and visits to the town. He said, “My great-grandmother came from Balbriggan and I had a big connection with Balbriggan. Auntie Kit, my grandmother’s sister had a shop here in the town. She married a man called White, so there are family members, including Declan White, who married a daughter of Sean McBride, who died a few years ago. “I can remember as a very young child visiting Balbriggan to meet my grand-aunt, my grand- mother’s sister. They had a little shop in the town and as we were townies from Dublin, we were fascinated with being in a shop where the bell rang when you opened the front door of the shop. Balbriggan was only a small village at that time and nothing like the big metropolis it is today”. “My grandmother wrote Irish stories and the original books she published back in the 1940s, many of them were actually folk stories she got from her mother, which were rural folk stories, which obviously came from Balbriggan,” he concluded. Beauty TrendsFor Spring 2016Spring is rising every-where – and with itbrings a time of changeand renewal. But it isnot only nature thatchanges with the firstwarm sunbeam, peoplealso love to vary theirappearance along withthe season. It’s a goodthing that with the newseason, current trendsof beauty and stylingalso change. Localbeauty stores offer newranges with differentcolours, designs andideas that are appro-priate for spring. TheCounty Leader wantedto know more and had atalk to some shopsoffering beauty prod-ucts in North CountyDublin. Roisin from McCartan’sPharmacy said; “At themoment we have manypastel colours, suitablefor spring.” Whether it’s eyeshadow, Rouge ormake-up – the aim is tolook natural. “You

should use very lightmake-up, such as bb-creams instead of heavyfoundations”, thebeauty specialistcontinued. Clara, manager of Jule’sBeauty agreed, although she had this toadd: “It should looknatural, but we use a lotof products to make itlook that way.” Contouring is on trendat the moment, wheremake-up in differentshades is used to addstructure to the face. With this look, rouge iskept quite light withhues of pink, while thelips should be bright-ened up with colourslike coral or peach. Jule’s Beauty Salonuses mainly red andnatural hues, as Clararevealed to the CountyLeader. When it comesto eye make up, Roisinsaid; “copper and lightbrown are the best touse when trying to getthe natural look.” She

also advised thateyebrows shouldn’t be too heavy andshould be kept quitelight as well. Spring colours can alsobe found in nail polish.“We get all the springcolours like yellow andbaby blue”, said Roisinfrom McCartan’sPharmacy. In general, there is always room fora bit of glitter and glossduring this season. It’s obvious spring has

a great influence onbeauty products andthere are lots of possi-bilities to embellishyourself during spring2016. Even if your make-up is worn quite lightduring the day, there isalways the chance tojazz it up a bit in theevening by using darkerlipsticks – there arealways possibilities forvariations.Another way for gettingyou ready for spring isto get that smootheffect with laser hairremoval. Surprised? From year to year morepeople make appoint-ments for these treat-ments which arebecoming quitepopular. “Men are getting moreinterested in beautyover the last few years”,said Sharon fromSensius Laser HairRemoval. She told usthat they like to havetreatments for theircheeks or even theirwhole face, while

women prefer to lasertheir bikini zones andunderarms. The bigadvantage is that it lastslonger that shaving andis a lot less painfulthan the traditionalwaxing. But Sharonalso added that the

results vary fromperson to person. There’s one morereason to visit theSensius clinic and thatis that they also offertattoo removals. “Manypeople will have pickedtattoos when they wereeither drunk orteenagers and they nolonger like them.”Summer time isn’t faraway and people wantto go swimming andwear bikinis, so now is agood time to removeyour tattoo, becauseyou have to do it twomonths before showingthe affected skin. Another point is thatmany couples getmarried in either springor summer. “There aremany customers thatare going to haveweddings and want tohave removed theirtattoos before theirimportant day”, addedthe beauty expert. Soit’s important to thinkearly about what youwant to look like inspring and summer, because these treat-ments take their time. These days it is reallyimportant to acces-sorise – like forexample, getting theright glasses. Especiallyin spring, many peopleare searching for newglasses, or for the rightsunglasses for theupcoming summer. Even if you don’t needthem it is getting moreand more popular towear them just as afashion statement. But what are the currenttrends for stylishglasses? The CountyLeader had a look atone of the new collec-tions from SpecsaversOpticians which iscalled ‘Love Maschino”. Fitting to the name, thecollection includesmany frames with frivo-lous patterns in red. Therim is usually blackhowever they impresswith their unusualshape. With regards to thesunglasses, it is theplain and thick framesin either black or whitethat will give theappearance of simpleelegance. So peoplewho want to prepare forsummer should startearly when searchingfor the right acces-sories, before the allbest ones are gone. With a comprehensivelook at the new collec-tions in your local storeand enough time to pickout your favouritethings, nothing can gowrong this season!

Selfridges of London have launched an agender fashion rangeto fly in the face of conventional fashion gender roles. TheOxford Street department store has gotten rid of its separatewomen and menswear departments in favour of three floors ofunisex fashion. Selfridges believe that shoppers no longer wantto be defined or limited by their gender as to what they canwear. Instead, they are able to shop for unisex or 'agender'clothing and the store describe the new concept as a celebra-tion of fashion without definition.

After the long winter, ourhouses and gardensusually don’t look theway we want them to.Take the opportunitynow to revitalise yours! With a few simple stepsit will be completelytransformed:

DO IT YOURSELF

If you like to do someimprovements in yourhouse, it’s the best wayto create some lovely

things on your own.Take time to sit downwith your children, takeout the watercoloursand paint together nicefamily or spring pictureswhich you hang up onthe walls. Or have awalk outside, collectsome seasonal flowersthat begin to flourishnow and press thembetween the pages ofheavy books to makethem durable. You cancreate an album with

them or just stick themon papers which youhang up in the house. It’s fitting for spring, you do somethingtogether as a family andyour children can learnsomething about thenature. And there arestill lots of other possi-bilities to tinker some-thing spring-themedthat is even quiteuseful. Make forexample your own flow-erpots for this spring

out of pottery claywhich you can buy inmany art shops. So youhave the freedom to tryown designs and orna-ments to create some-thing individual thatnobody else has. If youthink this is too muchwork you can just buysome nature colouredpots and paint them onyour own. And, ofcourse, don’t forget toinvolve your children!

THOUGHT ABOUTEVERYTHING?

If you’ve alreadycleaned your house andprepared everything forspring, have youthought about cleaningyour car? When the sunis shining more oftenand people go outsideand walk along thestreets you shouldnecessarily think aboutthe state of your car. After all it looks muchbetter shining and freshpolished than with theold mud and dust of thewinter months on it. Andof course you will use itmore often for springexcursions, so have acheck if everything’salright and the car is stillroadworthy!

A PLACE TO RELAX

Your furniture - gardenchairs and tables - mayhave a miserable lookdue to the heavy rainfalland storms this winter. There are two possibli-ties to solve thisproblem: eitherrepainting and fixing

your current furniture orbuying new one. Youcan find the appr-popriate waterproofpaint - why not inexciting colours such asyellow and blue? -varnish and maybe alsoa few screws in the localstores. Insist in beinghelped by all the (olde n o u g h ) f a m i l ymembers. You could letthem decide in whichcolour they want each topaint a chair for a morecolourful garden. If thisis too much work foryou, get informed aboutnew furniture to relax onin the following months. There are plenty ofspecial offers during thefollowing weeks.

BUILD NEW POSSIBLITIES

You probably have a lotof gardening tools inyour garden but nowreal place to storethem. Get active bybuilding (or buying) asmall cupboard or evena hut for them. Thismay be a little expen-sive, but it will trans-form your gardencompletely. If you storethem properly, they arealso less likely to getaffected by the Irishweather. If you havechildren, think ofinstalling a swing or alittle football pitch withsmall goal posts so thatthey can enjoy them-selves as much as youdo on the warmsummer afternoonsthat will hopefullycome soon.

The Dublin Fingal Rotary held a lunch last week inhonour of International Women’s Day. At the event, was a guest speaker, Carol Brill, and the presenta-tion of a cheque to local charity Remember Us. Itwas a hugely successful lunch, with well over theestimated numbers in attendance. Carol Brill gave a very moving speech. Carol suffersfrom Usher syndromes, a genetic condition thataffects her sight and hearing. She told how she fellinto a depression and couldn’t accept her illness, buthow a light at the end of the tunnel came in the formof her daughter. When she was born, her outlookchanged. Her life had been laced with tragedy, having lost a son previous to the birth of her babygirl 8 years ago. At the beginning of her speech sheposed the question, ‘Imagine not being able to seeor hear your children, imagine how terrible thatwould be?’ Now she is determined to live her life to the full, making memories she can always call back in hermind’s eye long after her sight has failed her. Shesaid that ‘The way my daughter sees my illness hasmade me view it through new eyes.’ It was a beautiful and uplifting speech by a verycourageous woman and a very fitting speaker tocelebrate what it means to be a woman onInternational Women’s Day. Older People UrgedTo Check MedicationDosagesThe Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) has urged olderpatients in the North County to ask their pharmacistsfor help in making sure they take their medication atthe right time and in the right way. The IPU is alsocalling for the role of community pharmacists to beexpanded to allow for the provision of Medicines UseReviews to older patients. Research shows that people who take medicine formore than one condition are more likely not to taketheir medication properly. One-third of over-65s inIreland regularly take five or more medicines and just

15 per cent of people with three medical conditionssay they take their medicine without fail. IPU President Kathy Maher said that medicinesmanagement can be complex for older people, espe-cially for those dealing with more than one condition. However, she said: “It really is very important for yourhealth and quality of life that you take your medicineas instructed”. “Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and ask yourpharmacist what you should do if you miss a dose. Ifswallowing tablets is difficult, ask your pharmacist ifthere is a liquid form of the medicine or whether youcould crush your tablets. Do NOT break, crush or chewtablets without asking your pharmacist first. Try totake your medicines at the same time every day.Dividing your medicine in a weekly tray can be ahelpful way of making sure you don’t forget to take atablet,” she said.
