Highlights

A Movement 90 Million StrongThe writing is on the wall: the death penalty’s days are numbered. Six states in the past decade have said no to capital punishment. Today, 18 states are death penalty-free, with significant

movement away from the death penalty in almost every other state where it is on the books.

Perhaps most importantly, public opinion is turning away from the death penalty. Support for the death penalty has dropped from 78% in 1996 to 55% in 2013. In fact, polling suggests that 90 million Americans oppose the death penalty or believe it is unfair. The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty has

been working steadily, often times behind the scenes, to help build toward this moment. We have spent decades working to sway public opinion, and our work has brought us to a time when repeal bills are signed into law.

But with stories continuing of botched executions, murder victims’ families barred from testifying against the death penalty, and studies showing that 4% of defendants who are sentenced to die are likely innocent, the need to grow our movement to an unstoppable force has never been clearer.

In January 2014, the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty launched the 90 Million Strong Campaign, a first of its kind mobilization effort for the abolition movement. We have increased our social media presence and are building new alliances with national opinion leaders and organizations to engage the 90 million Americans who are ready to make a difference.

To get more involved, check us out and engage with us:

Results so far:• More than 10,000 people have taken

action through our campaign to date.

• Over 200 people have shared their story of why they oppose the death penalty on Tumblr, and those stories have been shared with thousands of people across the globe.

• More than 5,000 followers, views, likes and shares of important information about the death penalty on social media.

• Millions of Americans reached through traditional media, television and radio appearances.

Research shows

4% of defendants who are sentenced to die are likely innocent.

Message from the Executive DirectorIt’s an exciting time to be part of the abolition movement. Everywhere you turn, people are recognizing that the death penalty is wrong and it’s time for repeal.

In January of this year, the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty launched the 90 Million Strong Campaign, a grassroots mobilization and public awareness campaign. Polling suggests that there are 90 million U.S. citizens who oppose the death penalty or think it is unfair. The 90 Million Strong Campaign is designed to maximize the latest technology, the media, and good old fashioned shoe leather to engage these individuals in our fight.

And we have seen incredible results. Log onto our Tumblr page (ncadp.tumblr.com) and you’ll find hundreds of stories from people sharing why they oppose the death penalty. We have focused on increasing our reach on Twitter and Facebook, having grown our social media reach by 30% in

just six months. Even more stunning, since the launch of the Campaign, more than 10,000 people have taken action — many for the first time.

But as we celebrate our growing momentum, we must not lose sight of the gravity of our cause. Our fight is not about generating “likes” on Facebook or sending out more tweets. With eyes forward and feet on the ground, we’re mobilizing to save lives and create a justice system that is consistent with our values as Americans and human beings. We are providing support and training opportunities to volunteers and activists across the country. Get involved and help us end the death penalty.

The 90 Million Strong Campaign is using every tool available to build the momentum we need to advance our movement, starting with getting to know who supports abolition and what motivates them to take action. This year we conducted ground-breaking research to learn more about the millions of Americans who share our view that the death penalty must end.

Our preliminary findings are encouraging. We conducted research in two states and have plans to extend the research to others. But what we have learned so far is this:

While the age and demographics of people who oppose the death penalty may vary by state, death

penalty opponents are ready and willing to engage in efforts to end the practice. Among the concerns that likely spur death penalty opponents to action are concerns about the risk of executing innocent people and unfairness in the use of capital punishment.

Death penalty opponents are ready and willing to speak with policymakers and use social media to spread the word. And a majority of death penalty supporters in our research consider a policymaker’s position on the death penalty when determining which candidate to support.

These are preliminary findings, but we have reason to believe that the trends we have seen will hold more broadly.

“The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty is a leader in the growing movement to abolish capital punishment. It has helped repeal death penalty laws in six states and is changing public opinion nationwide about the human and financial costs of state sanctioned killings.” — Wendy Kaminer

“I’m so proud and grateful for the work you do day-in-and-day-out to end the death penalty. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” — Stephen Rohde

Death Penalty Focus

“I just had to take this opportunity to express my thanks for all your support for us here in Kansas. Thanks to your encouragement and support, we have come such a long ways.

“When I consider where we are now, with the diverse support for abolition, I sometimes just want to pinch myself because it is so far removed from where we were just a few years ago. [NCADP Senior Campaign Consultant Lori Baux] is a huge asset on our team. Your own support and encouragement to funders also has been vital for us. So, as we think about what we are grateful for, know that I am

mindful and grateful for NCADP’s support.” — Donna Schneweis
