World War I “Big Picture” Summary
• When: July, 1914 to November, 1918
• Who: Major Allied Powers: Great Britain, France, Russia (until 1917)
& Later Italy & USA
Major Central Powers: Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary
• How: Huge scale attacks with new deadly military technology including mechanized weapons
(ex: tanks), chemical weapons (ex: poison gas), long range artillery (ex: cannons that fire 3+ miles) and air power (ex: fighter plans & aerial bombing) but often traditional tactics (ex: trenches & direct infantry charges)
• Where: Most battles in Europe (Western & Eastern Fronts) with some conflict in colonial
holdings across Africa & Asia
• What Resulted:- 10+ millions soldiers died & 15+ millions injured…7+ millions of civilians casualties as well
- Europe economically devastated, socially embittered & politically unstable
- Treaty of Versailles ending WWI fails to solve the major issues that caused war in the first place
and leads to an even bigger conflict (World War II) 20 years later
