President’s Message
I will complete my term
as president of the Council at
the end of December.
I would like to express
my deep gratitude to all our
members for their
encouragement, as well to all
the officers and board
members for their
tremendous support and guidance, that has helped me to
execute my duties during this period. Although I am
stepping down as president, I will continue working and
supporting the goals of the Navy League of the United
States and our Fort Lauderdale Council, as I have done
for the last sixteen years.
December is a busy month for our Council. This past
Friday, our Council co-hosted a Holiday Party, with the
Broward County Council, honoring the US Coast Guard
at Briny Riverfront Restaurant. On Sunday, December
4th, the annual Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration
Ceremony was held at USCG Station Fort Lauderdale.
LCDR Alan M. Starr, NSCC and State Representative
George Moraitis spoke at the moving ceremony. Our
Spruance Division Sea Cadets performed the Color
Guard. On Monday, December 5th, a ceremony was held
at the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum to
commemorate the anniversary of the disappearance of
Five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers, in a training
mission, over the Bermuda Triangle on December 5th,
1945.
We hope to see all our members and guests at our
annual Holiday Dinner Meeting on Wednesday, December
21st, 6pm at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club. We will be
collecting “Toys for Tots”, so please bring an unwrapped
toy! Our Guest Speaker will be Brigadier General Kevin
Iiams, USMC, Commander, Marine Forces South. During
our dinner meeting, our new 2017 Slate of Officers will
be elected and installed.

The Cadets of the Spruance Division and Radford Training ship had an exceptional month.
We began the month with a trip to The Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, for the Annual Seal Muster. We chartered
two busses, packed a box lunch for all hands, and had an incredible day, where the Cadets participated in the activities, and
met with Active and Retired Navy SEALS. Flagship Training was held at the Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale. The
Cadets practiced knot tying, marksmanship, fire fighting, stretcher bearing, and line heaving. The Cadets and Staff of the
American Veterans Division in West Palm Beach were our guests. They were integrated with our Cadets and had the
opportunity to work at each event. Box Lunches were enjoyed by All.
The Veterans Day Holiday was filled with events. The Cadets presented Colors at Temple Beth El Cemetery, in Dania,
and LCDR Starr attended Shabbat Friday night Services at Temple Bat Yam, in Fort Lauderdale, and was the guest Speaker.
The whole Unit turned out for the Veterans Day morning Ceremony in the City of Sunrise. LCDR Starr was honored to be
the Guest Speaker.
We ended the month with discussion on Thanksgiving, and each Cadet was tasked with helping out at home, and to
speak about what they were thankful for in life.
Respectfully submitted,
LCDR Alan Starr NSCC,
Commanding Officer
