In the beginning of a newly established aquarium, waste products can quickly build up to toxic levels. Introducingfish, plants, and food to your aquarium begins a natural process called Biochemical Cycling which is exemplifiedby the nitrogen cycle. The process begins when fish and invertebrates excrete waste which is added to the ammoniaproduced by decaying food and organic compounds. The more sources of fish waste, the quicker and greater theammonia problem. Harmful ammonia and nitrite are constantly converted into less harmful nitrates, which in turnis used by plants and algae for food. An aquarium is full of both autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria that wantnothing more than to attach, grow, and form BIOFILMS where the bacteria convert toxic nitrogenous compoundsand ammonia into harmless products.

Nature provides many types of bacteria that in the presence of oxygen carry out the oxidation of ammonia to nitritesand eventually to nitrates in a process known as nitrification. First, bacteria settle on aragonite (reef sand) where theygrow into colonies and eventually form a BIOFILM. Marine nitrifying bacteria in the biofilm oxidize ammonia tonitrite. Then other bacterial species further oxidize nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate not utilized by plants is removed by otherbacteria in the absence of oxygen (the anaerobic environment found in the lower levels of the sediment) in a processcalled denitrification.

These bacteria are not harmful and are quite abundant in nature. However, three conditions are required for thisprocess to occur: 1. A surface upon which bacteria can attach, grow, and form BIOFILM; 2. ammonia as the substrateto start the process; and 3. an aerobic environment.

Cycling your tankWhen you start a new aquarium with dry sand or gravel, colonies or beneficial bacteria have not yet had the chanceto attach to a surface and grow. For a period of several weeks this presents a very hazardous environment for yourfish. One has to gradually build up the source of ammonia (i.e., start with only one or two small fish) to allow timefor the beneficial bacteria to grow and form a BIOFILM.

7It is very important in the maintenance of a marine aquariumthat the environment be replenished regularly. The bestmeans of accomplishing this is to change 15 percent to 20 per-cent of the water once a month. The ideal replacement wateris 100% natural ocean saltwater. A critical process in establishing a new marine aquarium sys-tem is the culturing of enough bacteria to adequately breakdown waste products. Nitrification is the first step in this veryimportant process. Nitrification is carried out by unrelatedgroups of heterotrophic and chemolithotrophic bacteria. Thefirst group converts ammonia to nitrite, which is then convert-ed to nitrate by the second group. The best-known catalystsof these reactions are Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, respec-tively, although other groups have also been identified (Belser1979, Bergeys 1989). Taken together, these bacteria can beused to ameliorate damage to the aquarium environment byreducing the ammonia content, which is generated as biologicwaste. Effective ammonia removal is extremely important asammonia is toxic to aquatic life and it creates a large demandfor oxygen (USEPA 1993).Natures Ocean Live Nutri-Seawater contains live, natu-rally-occurring Planktonic bacteria, which makes it the bestproduct for monthly water changes.
