Classroom Courses

Gas Distribution Operations

Build or expand your knowledge of the construction, operation, and maintenance of modern gas distribution systems. Apply fundamental technical concepts and relationships to real-life work situations. Discussions and class exercises cover codes and standards, leak inspection, emergency response, meters, pressure regulation, and much more.

Gas Distribution Engineering: Piping Systems and Materials

Understand the properties and design of piping systems—steel and plastic pipe (and cast iron, where appropriate)—and explore incident investigation, leakage control, repair/replace decisions, corrosion and cathodic protection, route selection criteria, and more.

Gas Distribution Engineering: System Planning

Among the topics you’ll cover in class are measurement principles; meter fundamentals; pressure regulation principles; overpressure protection; gas supply planning; gas control operations; system design principles and considerations; load estimating; gas flow principles and equations; system modeling; and enhancing pressure by redirecting flow.

Measurement and Regulator Station Design for Distribution and Transmission Systems

Explore the many important aspects of designing pressure regulation, overpressure protection, and flow control facilities. Examine the issues that need attention when revising, retrofitting, or replacing the facilities or altering their operation and maintenance—with an emphasis on economy and safety.

Pipeline Safety Regulatory Compliance

With recent pipeline safety compliance activity—Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP), Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP), Control Room Management (CRM), and updates to existing codes—it can be challenging to sort out what’s new and what’s needed. Get clear explanations and have your questions answered. Topics covered include detailed overviews of 49 CFR pipeline safety regulations, including Parts 190, 191, and 192 and the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of all natural gas pipelines—interstate, intrastate, and distribution.

Gas Controller Training for Distribution and Transmission

Learn to comply with the Final Rule for Control Room Management by understanding daily field operations that impact the flow of gas. Work with Stoner computer simulations of basic hydraulics and abnormal operating conditions on both gas distribution and transmission pipeline systems. Simulations are supported by transient flow analysis models of a typical gas system.

Distribution Integrity Management Program

Get a clear understanding of the DIMP regulations—which data must be evaluated, excess flow valve requirements, mechanical coupling standards, and aboveground leakage reporting. Learn the answers to Frequently Asked Questions for regulatory inspections. Find out about rule updates and future plans.

Online Learning

Gas Distribution Operations

Understand the processes and procedures needed for reliable delivery of clean, safe natural gas to consumers. Beginning with an introduction to natural gas and distribution, this course presents in-depth explanations of gas control, pipe joining, corrosion, odorization, abnormal operating conditions, uprating, and more. At the end of each course section, you’ll solve a reality-based problem through an interactive scenario. See what you’ve learned through practice questions with feedback that helps you assess your progress.

Gas Distribution Engineering

Build the skills and knowledge to make sound engineering decisions while designing an expanding natural gas distribution system. In this task-based course, Task 1 presents your fictional-but-realistic project assignment—bringing natural gas to the new Sunny Vale subdivision. You’ll focus on estimating gas loads, selecting pipe routes, calculating pipe sizes, determining valve requirements, selecting customer meters, increasing pipe pressures, and repairing or replacing existing pipes. This interactive course takes you through the tasks you’re expected to complete on the job.

Fundamentals of Gas Distribution

Develop your foundation in gas distribution, from an overview of the industry through all the processes and procedures required to bring gas from the wellhead to consumers. Understand basic engineering and fundamental gas concepts and learn about equipment and regulations. The course comprises 21 downloadable PDF chapters and an exam for each chapter.

“The courses flowed very well, and were an easy read. They

were a great source of information for

things I didn’t know, and also a good

reinforcement for things I thought

I knew about this industry.“

Natural Gas Field Skills Training ProgramDesigned for field workers involved in natural gas construction, operations, and maintenance, this program comprises more than 77 modules in ten topic areas. It helps prepare field workers for safe, effective on-the-job performance and operator qualification (OQ) assessments for regulatory compliance.

The modules are packaged for utilities or contractors under a license agreement. GTI will work with you to design and deliver a train-the-trainer program to transfer the

learning materials. Flexibility is built into the program, so you can train your workers online or in your classroom or blend the two

options to meet your needs.

GTI has created a mobile app for training and field support that allows you to customize the

Field Skills modules and integrate links to company-specific procedures, specifications,

standards, and drawings. The application works on both iOS and Android operating systems.

Earn an RGDP

Certificate

Since its inception in 1996, GTI’s Registered Gas Distribution Professional (RGDP) program has awarded certificates to hundreds of energy professionals.

RGDP comprises courses that give you a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of gas distribution engineering, operations, and auxiliary systems.

To earn RGDP, you must complete two core courses (Gas Distribution Operations and Gas Distribution Engineering) and one elective course.

You may combine classroom courses with online courses to earn RGDP. See all classroom and online elective options at gastechnology.org/certification.

We can also deliver the full RGDP program onsite at your facility.
