Unless a Grain of Wheat Falls to the Earth and Dies…Today’s Scriptures remind us…the time is growing shorter. There is a tension, an ominous feeling in the air. On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we hear Jesus speaking openly and honestly. He is approaching the hour of his death. He knows it is coming. He describes it in terms of a seed which must die in the ground before it can sprout and grow into a plant that will bear much fruit. He even speaks about how this whole event “troubles” him.

But through it all, Jesus remains steadfast. His purpose and his faith are strong. Perfect, in fact. Jesus models for us how we should act in the most challenging of circumstances. Furthermore, Jesus gives us what we need to always remain faithful. He graces us so that we can give of ourselves for the sake of others, even when that self-sacrifice is costly.

Jesus never said our life will be perfect. But he said we will discover everlasting life – perfection, actually - if we remain faithful as he was faithful.

By continuing to engage in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for the remainder of this Lenten Season and beyond, our faith is sustained and even strengthened. It is in those moments of self-sacrifice, of dying to self, that we discover the abundant life that Christ promises.

Final Opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation –There are just two more opportunities to participate in a communal Penance Service during the Season of Lent. The first will be held at Resurrection Church in Riverview on March 20th starting at 7 pm. The other will be at St. Anne Church in Ruskin on March 21st at 7 pm.

Confessions will also be held at the regular times here at Nativity on Saturday, March 24th. Confessions will NOT be held on Saturday, March 31st – which is Holy Saturday.

Featured Announcements & Events Weekly Reflection for March 18, 2018

Fifth Sunday of Lent (courtesy of catholicsteward.com)

Easter Sunday is but two weeks away (April 1). In our First Reading from the prophet Jeremiah, we hear God tell us, “I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.” To affirm that forgiveness, St. Paul has this to say in the Second Reading: “He (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” There is a connection between these two statements which present forgiveness as the way to salvation.

The Lenten season is one of penance, reflection, prayer, almsgiving, and fasting, perhaps even in that order, so we can better prepare ourselves for Easter Sunday and beyond. Lent reminds us that God is gracious and merciful. God’s divine mercy is a central theme of Lent.

One might say that the priceless gift of God’s mercy is highlighted and celebrated in the Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). That should be a key part of our Lenten journey. As mentioned only two weeks remain on that journey so getting to reconciliation is important if we have not done so already. Sacramental confession allows God’s loving mercy and His grace-filled absolution to be confirmed to us through a priest. God sees us with love, mercy, and an abundance of forgiveness. Christ, through the priest, helps us to let go of anything that gets in the way of our relationship to God. St. Isidore wrote, “Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin. All hope consists in confession. In confession there is a chance for mercy.”

Fish Fry & Bilingual Stations of the Cross Friday, March 23| 4:30-7:00 PM | Social Hall

Come out and enjoy the Nativity Men’s Club Award-winning Fish Fry! Proceeds benefit the Men's Club and the ministries supported by the Men’s Club. After you enjoy your Friday Fish Fry, make plans to join us in the Church as we pray the Stations of the Cross beginning at 6pm. This is a meditative way for you to enter more deeply into the Season of Lent by reflecting with Mary.

This year we were delighted to have Bishop Robert Lynch for

our Lenten Parish Mission. On the evenings of March

5-7, Bishop Lynch spoke to us, prayed with us, and helped us

to shape our image of the merciful face of God. With the

inspiration of the Holy Father, Pope Francis’s document

Evangelii Gaudium, Bishop Lynch encouraged us to see

Christ and the Church as manifestations of the merciful face

of God, while concluding by encouraging US to be the

merciful face of God to all whom we encounter.
