Every year, Native Eyewear™ sets its sights on a place that embodies the spirit

of adventure down to the roots. We go into that place—usually a town nestled

up in the mountains or against a shimmering body of water—and we learn its story

from the people who know it best. We call this annual expedition the Locals Only Project,

and this year, it’s led us to Petoskey, Michigan.

Set in an idyllic American locale mere steps from the ebbing waters of Lake Michigan,

Petoskey breeds a community filled with lovers of life. It’s an epicenter of mountain

biking, boating, hiking, lake and river fishing; it’s a burgeoning cultural hub where the

locally brewed beer tastes better every year. It’s far enough north to be covered in snow

for six months a year and far enough south to be an outdoor explorer’s dream for

the other six. Even the great writer and traveler Ernest Hemingway penned stories

of Petoskey that rivaled any he wrote about Pamplona or Paris.

In the summer of 2014, we sent our own crew to meet up with a collection of writers,

videographers and photographers to uncover the Petoskey most visitors never see. What

we found was just that: an equally sprawling and intimate setting where people come

together for all manner of amazing experiences. Its community is truly special—and

once you’ve explored the following pages, you’ll know exactly why.
