Umpiring Approaches to Discipline

Both players and coaches are looking for one thing from umpires during the season. That is:

ConsistencyAreas of concern are :

Lifted/Aerial Ball, Breakdown Tackles, Not retreating 5 metres and issue of cards.

ConsistencyType of infringement Description examples Card

Technical Hitting ball awayNot retreating 5 metresAbusive/foul languageUsing stick above shoulder (breakdown)Deliberate footSliding (not dangerous)Clumsy tackle (not dangerous)Time wasting (incl. PC)

    5 min 10 min

Physical/break down

Bad/dangerous tackleTackle that grounds a playerDangerous use of stick or bodyDeliberate breakdown of play (incl. out of defence)Deliberate technical foul that denies a goal scoring opportunity

10 min

Some points to note…

1. Not all technical infringements will require a card.

2. For a technical infringement, consider the green card first, assuming the foul does not stop a goal scoring opportunity. For a repeat (by the same player), then the yellow card

should be shown. An additional repeat (by the same player) then a 10 min yellow is appropriate. ‘New offenders’ should receive

either a 5 minute yellow.

3. For physical/breakdown plays, then the yellow should be shown (10 min). A repeat (by the same player) should be a

red card.

4. If any player who has been awarded a Yellow card commits a second yellow card offence a red card should be awarded
