PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Feast: November 21

Mary’s presentation was celebrated in Jerusalem in the sixth century. A church was built there in honor of this mystery. The Eastern Church was more interested in the feast, but it does appear in the West in the 11th century. Although the feast at times disappeared from the calendar, in the 16th century it became a feast of the universal Church.

As with Mary’s birth, we read of Mary’s presentation in the temple only in apocryphal literature. In what is recognized as an unhistorical account, the Protoevangelium of James tells us that Anna and Joachim offered Mary to God in the Temple when she was 3 years old. This was to carry out a promise made to God when Anna was still childless.

Though it cannot be proven historically, Mary’s presentation has an important theological purpose. It continues the impact of the feasts of the Immaculate Conception and of the birth of Mary. It emphasizes that the holiness conferred on Mary from the beginning of her life on earth continued through her early childhood and beyond.

It is sometimes difficult for modern Westerners to appreciate a feast like this. The Eastern Church, however, was quite open to this feast and even somewhat insistent about celebrating it. Even though the feast has no basis in history, it stresses an important truth about Mary: From the beginning of her life, she was dedicated to God. She herself became a greater temple than any made by hands. God came to dwell in her in a marvelous manner and sanctified her for her unique role in God’s saving work. At the same time, the magnificence of Mary enriches her children. They—we—too are temples of God and sanctified in order that we might enjoy and share in God’s saving work.

Reflections on the Wisdom from St. Francis

by Fr. Bobby

The Lord says, Love your enemies [do good to those

who hate you and pray for those who persecute and

slander you.] For that person truly loves his enemy who

is not hurt by an injury done to him, but, because of the

love of God, is strung by the sin of his soul. Let him

show him love by his deeds. (Admoniton IX)

Young Francis sets off to battle

Francis of Assisi truly had to learn the same lesson

as every other follower of Christ: that loving your

enemy may not be easy, but it is essential if we are to

follow Jesus. One day Francis stood before the walls of

the city of Perugia, Assisi’s neighbor and sworn enemy.

It was the Perugians who had defeated the army of

Assisi and put Francis in prison, yet he knew he was

called by God to preach to them, to share with them

the message of God’s peace. We can only imagine

Francis’ struggle. It was hard for him to believe,

perhaps, that God could love the Perugians or that he,

a man of Assisi, should preach that divine love to

them. He hesitated, yet in the end he let the Spirit

guide him into the town where he spoke the Gospel

message. He thus was able to show his love by his

deeds. May the Lord bless and keep you!

ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ ‘HUMBLED’ BY ELECTION AS USCCB PRESIDENT

Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez issued

the following statement upon being

elected President of the United States Conference

of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore, Maryland

on November 12, 2019.

I am humbled by this vote and my brother bishops’ trust in me.

This election is an honor for me. and it recognizes the beautiful

diversity and the missionary spirit of the family of God in the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles. But it is also a recognition of the

essential place that Latino Catholics hold in the life of the Church

and in the life of our great nation.

We are living in a moment of hope and renewal in the Church.

United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, I look forward to

working with my brother bishops to inspire our Catholic people

to follow Jesus Christ in holiness and love and to continue our

mission of spreading the mercy of God and building his Kingdom

on earth.

I entrust these next three years to the maternal care of Our Lady

of Guadalupe and I ask the prayers of my fellow Catholics — all

our priests, deacons, and seminarians; all our consecrated men

and women; and especially our lay people, who are so vital in

carrying forward the Church’s mission.
