2016 Chapter U Individual of the Year

JoAnn Taylor

Hello Chapter U and all other GWRRA Members,

With summer coming to an end and fall coming into the picture, Robbie and I hope all of you had a good summer. We also hope everyone had a chance to get away and take some time for yourselves , whether you did so on your bike or in your car.

This past month, Robbie and I have had an awesome time. Our 12 day Wing Ding trip was absolutely beautiful. Barry and Missy led the dinner ride to the 5 and 20. The Fall Fest in Warsaw was a great turnout and great weather. Then the Chapter took a Breakfast Ride, led by Tom and Tennato Jackson, MI to Roxy's Café. Before leaving town, some went on a beforeice cream ride, but Robbie and I headed over to the Parlour Ice Cream Shop.Oh what a serving.

By the time the newsletter comes out this month, we may have taken our Dinner Ride. It will be to Tiffany's in Topeka, IN. On October 22nd, Robbie and I will be having a get together at our home to eat some food and discuss matters for our Christmas Party. Can you believe it's just around the corner. Then Rod and Parris will be leading the November Breakfast Ride - TBA.

Robbie and I would like to Thank everyone who stepped in to help conduct last months gathering while we were out west and at Wing Ding. Thanks again!

Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge,

Marc and Robbie

Hello Chapter U,

Hope all are doing well. Here is what happened last month. September 17th Barry & Missy lead the dinner ride to 5&20 restaurant, 18 members went and had some good food ( buffet ) and fellowship. September 25th was the Northern GWRRA Fall Fest in Warsaw, 8 members went and had a great time. Lots of changes to the fall fest this year. If you didn't make it, put some of these fun GWRRA things on your calendar. October 1st ,Tom & Teena led the breakfast ride to Jackson Michigan. The ride was to the Roxy Cafe, then they went on a ride around the area and stopped for ice cream at the Parlor. What a great ride. 8 members attended . Marc & Robbie will be hosting a fall get together after the officers meeting on October 22nd . We would love to see you there. Well that's all for now.

Your ACD Larry&AllisonGod Bless and happy riding!

How to prepare your bike for long term storage. Taken from an article written by Jessica Prokup on Twisted throttle .com. 1. Surface prep.Give your bike a thorough cleaning before putting it away—letting bug guts or water spots sit on your paint can corrode the finish. Wash your bike and dry it completely to get all the moisture off the surfaces, then add a coat of wax, which will act as a barrier against moisture and rust. You might also consider using a corrosion inhibitor to protect plastic, metal, rubber carbon fiber and anodized surfaces form oxidation and/ or rust.2. Tend to the battery.Your battery is a vital part of your motorcycle. While you may not think about it much, you’ll quickly become aware of it when it not functioning properly.Proper maintenance and storage will help you get the longest possible service life from this critical and costly part of your bike. For starters, check the battery fluid level. (This step only applies if you have a lead acid battery with the screw-on type caps on top.) Low battery acid causes sulfating that can lead to a short between the internal plates. This is a common failure for this type of battery, and it’s the result of neglect. If you never check the fluid level until there’s a problem, by that time it is too late to restore the battery. Maintenance-free batteries are not exactly as the name suggests. While fluid level of this battery cannot be adjusted because it is sealed, these batteries will require upkeep in the off-season. Warm storage and periodic charging will provide you with the longest service life from your battery. Automatic chargers are a good way to go.3. Prep the fuel system. You’ve probably all heard (or have experienced yourself ) horror stories of pricy carburetor or injector repairs needed after fuel was left stagnant in a motorcycle for too long. With the introduction of ethanol into today’s fuels. Storage has become an issue whether it be your motorcycle or your lawn mower. Ethanol is much more hygroscopic than regular gasoline, meaning it holds dissolved or suspended water. This can lead to component corrosion, gum, varnish, and carbon deposits that wreak havoc in both carbureted and fuel-injected systems. The best way to deal with this is to fill your tank and treat your fuel and fuel system with an additive that is specifi-cally designed to deal with the problems created by ethanol fuels. The use of a fuel stabilizer is recommended. Be sure to go for a short ride after adding the product, to get the treatment completely into the fuel system before storing the bike. Carbureted motorcycles need special consideration, even if the fuel is properly treated. Carburetors vent directly to the atmosphere, which means that fuel left in them will evaporate, leaving behind a thin film that will restrict the flow of fuel through the small jets and other fuel passages. The best preparation for carbureted systems is to run the fuel treatment into the system, switch the petcock to the “off” position (if it’s not a vacuum unit), and drain the carburetors. For vacuum petcock systems, you only need to drain the carburetors.4. Replace the engine oil. Many riders are not aware that the motor oil in their engine not only acts as a lubricant, but also aids in the filtration system. The oil holds small particles in suspension until they reach the filter, where most of them will be trapped and removed form circulation. One major deposit that ends up in suspension is carbon. Carbon is created in the combustion chamber and is pushed past the piston rings every time a cylinder is fired. When a motorcycle is put into storage with used motor oil, the carbon will slowly separate and rise to the surface. This deposit is extremely corrosive and will cause etching on metal surfaces, such as gears and bearings. The engine oil should be replaced before storage to remove dirty oil and harmful carbon deposits suspended within it.5. Don’t forget the tires.Ever think about your tires when you’re putting your bike away? If not, you should-tires are porous and will lose air while in storage. A soft of flat tire will develop a permanent flat spot if left weighted in one position for an extended period of time. Prevent this by storing your motorcycle on its center stand (if it has one) or paddock stands. If neither is an option, consider overinflating the tires and moving the bike form time to time, so the tire is not in the same position for months on end.6. Cover it up.A properly fitting motorcycle cover provides both outdoor and indoor protection. Indoors, it will protect your bikes paint and body from abrasive dust as well as minor impacts that can occur when a bike is in storage. It will also keep moisture out so it doesn’t get trapped underneath and create corrosion or rust. Mice and rodents are notorious for hiding inside exhaust pipes and making nests out of air filters. To avoid any furry surprises when it’s time to ride again, try covering up your air intake and exhaust opening(s) with plastic bags. Just don’t forget to remove the bags before you fire up the bike! Strategically placed moth balls will also help to keep those nasty, wire eating mice away.

Riders Ed—Jay reminded us that this is the time of year to start thinking about prepping the bike for winter storage. Things to do: • Wash and wax the bike.• Hook up the battery tender-and may also consider taking out the bke and put in a warmer place. If it is a lead acid battery, be sure the water level is up.• Put some fuel stailizer in before topping off the tan and then be sure to run the bike for a while to be sure it is mixed well.• Change the oil• Put bike on the center stand to avoid flat spots on the tires.• Cover the exhaust to keep mice out.• Cover the bike.

MEC—Marv has contacted all on the latest area report..

Ride Coord—Tom passed out a survey sheet to get an idea of what kind of rides the members want to go on and asked for suggestions for rides. The Indiana travelling plaque is at D2 in Fort Wayne and has been there since June.

Chapter Store—Jinger has list of available items and she will take more orders but she would like to have the money in advance.

Game—Allison led us with another Minute to Win It game. We had to stand up candy corn in 30 seconds. Jinger won.

Sunshine Gal—Anniversaries included Tom and Teena, Larry and Allison, Ron and Terese and Jerry and Geneva. Birthdays included Tom, Troy, Nick, Bill, Laura and Patti.

The Good Deed Award was presented to Rod Wilcox for putting Robbie in jail at Wing Ding.

The candy jar was won by Delles.

Gathering was adjourned.
