The�NSCR�was�conceived�in�2009,�as�a�collaborative�effort�

between�the�Institute�of�Human�Virology�Nigeria�(IHVN),�

Federal�Ministry�of�Health�(FMOH)�and�cancer�registries�

of�federal�health�institutions�in�Nigeria.�The�main�

objective�of�this�program�is�to�provide�data�from�Nigeria�

cancer�registries�on�the�most�common�cancers,�cancer�

incidence�and�cancer�mortality�statistics.

Report of NSCR site monitoring visits to Sokoto and Enugu Cancer

Registries

The NSCR with the mandate of strengthening cancer registration in Nigeria by

providing technical support and capacity building through training and

mentoring of cancer registry staff, carried out a monitoring and mentoring visit to

Sokoto and Enugu Cancer Registries. These monitoring and mentoring visits

provided an opportunity to evaluate data quality and ensure best practices in

cancer registration according to international standard.

okoto Cancer Registry (SCR) came into existence in November, 2013. The registry was

Sestablished by NSCR as a population-based cancer registry to improve coverage of cancer

registration in Nigeria. SCR, located in the Histopathology Department of the Usmanu

Danfodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto, Northwestern population-based Cancer

Registry, Nigeria. The registry has been defined to cover Sokoto North, Sokoto South and Wamakko

Local Governments with a combined population of 609,944 people.

The registry was visited by Dr Michael Odutola of NSCR from 13-16 April, 2014, to evaluate its

activities in its 5 months of existence. During the site visit, the registry database was checked for

consistency, registrations practices were re-examined and on-site training provided to the registry

staff. Advocacy visits were made with the cancer registrar to data sources within and outside UDUTH.

The data sources outside UDUTH visited were the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto; Medi-Stop Diagnostic

Center, Sokoto; Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital, Sokoto; Sokoto Clinic, Sokoto and

Women and Children Welfare Clinic, Sokoto.

A brief meeting was held with Dr Yakubu Ahmed (Chief Medical Director of UDUTH), Prof Itseh Kufre

(SCR director) and Mr Mohammad Tanko-Rambo (Cancer Registrar) during the visit. The progress

made by the registry was discussed and pending logistic issues were resolved. The CMD

commended the effort of NSCR in reviving cancer registration in Nigeria, especially in the Northern

region of the country and reiterated his commitment and support to the registry.

nugu Cancer Registry (ECR) started in 1988 and functioned as a Hospital Based Cancer

ERegistry until 2012 when the registry was upgraded to Population Based Cancer Registry

status. ECR is located in the Oncology Department of the University of Nigeria Teaching

Hospital (UNTH) Enugu, Southeastern Nigeria. The registry covers Enugu metropolis and

surrounding communities comprising of Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Awgu and Nkanu

Local Government Areas with a population of 1,103,153 people.

Dr Elima Jedy Agba of NSCR visited the registry from 23-26 June, 2014 as part of the monitoring and

mentoring activities of NSCR. The activities of the registry were reviewed; data checked for quality

control and data sources within and outside UNTH were visited.

A visit was paid to the Acting Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee Dr. O Onodugo by the

Registry Director, Prof. Ezeome, Dr. Elima Jedy-Agba and the Cancer Registrar Ms. Ann Okoroafor. The

progress made by the ECR was discussed and the recent abstract accepted for presentation at the

UICC World Cancer Congress in Melbourne Australia in Dec. 2014 was also mentioned.

The key challenges facing the registry such as finance,

unstable power supply and lack of internet facilities were

discussed. The acting CMAC commended the registry director

for the meaningful progress made despite the challenges and

promised that the hospital management would try to meet

the requests made by the registry.

Ekiti Cancer Registry training and establishment

A staff of the Ekiti Cancer Registry (ECR) was sponsored

by the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital

(ESUTH) to visit NSCR for training on Cancer

Registration Methods. This training took place between the

23rd and 25th of July, 2014 at the Institute of Human Virology

Nigeria (IHVN) training room in Abuja, Nigeria. The training

attended by Mr Joshua Inubile, was organized with the

objective of setting up and building the capacity of the ECR as a Population Based Cancer Registry.

The training focused on basic cancer registration methods and principles of data abstraction,

collation and analysis.

The Ekiti Cancer Registry population has been defined to cover Ado, Ikere, Irepodun-Ifelodun, Ido-Osi, Ekiti Southwest Local Government Areas with a population of 918,866 people.

rs. Chinyere Chukwubuike is the Data Abstractor of the Abuja Cancer Registry which is

Msituated at the National Hospital Abuja. She graduated from University of Abuja as an

economist and holds a National Diploma Certificate in Health Information

Management from Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. Zaria, Nigeria

Mrs. Chukwubuike is a pioneer staff of the registry which started as a hospital based cancer registry in

2006 and was upgraded to a Population Based Cancer Registry by 2009. The Abuja Cancer Registry is

supervised by a Registry Committee with the following members: Dr. Igbinoba Festus

(Oncologist/Radiotherapist), Dr. Jibril Paul (Pathologist) and Mrs. A. Abubakar (HOD/Asst Dir.

Records)

Mrs Chukwubuike has been privileged to attend local and international trainings on cancer

registration.

She studied at the Ibadan Cancer Registry, Ibadan, Nigeria from 13th - 24th October 2008

She attended the Cancer Registration and Epidemiology at the Institute of Human Virology,

Abuja, Nigeria from 7th – 9th April, 2009.

She attended the Cancer Registration and Epidemiology (Quality Control in Cancer Registration)

at Institute of Human Virology Nigeria, Abuja, Nigeria from 21st – 23rd Feb 2011.

She attended the IARC Summer School on Cancer Epidemiology in Lyon, France from 16th – 20th

June 2014. She says “The IARC Summer School on cancer Registration that I was privileged to

attend was educative and enlightening especially in the area of data quality control measures”.
